Frequently Asked Questions

Can Evanger's products help with urinary tract infections?

Yes. Struvite crystals, rock - like accretions that scrape sensitive tissues in the urinary tract, are a major cause of inflammation and infection in dogs and cats. The formation of struvite crystals is possible when urine is too alkaline. In meat, we are provided with an acidifier that is natural and promotes overall good health in dogs and cats. So increasing the amount of high quality meat consumed can acidify the urine and help prevent the formation of struvite crystals. Evanger’s offers many canned products whose sole ingredient is USDA meat. Choose from among the 8 Grain Free Game Meats, , Hunk of Beef, 100% Organic Chicken, as well as many others. These products are excellent supplements or treats for dogs and cats. For balanced meals, which contain vitamins and minerals, try our Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner for dogs; USDA certified Organic Braised Chicken Dinner, Organic Turkey with Butternut Squash, and Holistic Pheasant Dinner for cats. Of course, any dog or cat with urinary tract problems should be under the care of a veterinarian.

Can I feed dog food to my cats and cat food to my dogs?

Any Evanger’s food that is pure meat, such as the Grain Free Game Meats, Hunk of Beef, and Wild Salmon, can be fed to both cats and dogs as snacks, treats, or mixed with Evanger’s dry food, snacks, or treats. However, foods that include vitamins and minerals to make a complete balanced diet are formulated specifically for a dog or cat and should be fed to the indicated species.

Knowing the different dietary needs of dogs and cats is very important because pet owners that allow a dog to eat cat food or a cat to eat dog food could end up with a very sick pet….or worse. Illnesses do not usually happen if only a few meals are shared, but will happen if it continues on a regular basis. Incidentally, dogs are omnivores like people; they eat both meat and vegetables. Cats are obligate carnivores; they eat mostly meat. Cats have a higher protein and fat requirement than dogs. Dogs that eat cat food could end up with liver, kidney and/or pancreatic problems because cat foods are too high in protein and fat for dogs to properly metabolize. Cats that eat dog foods could end up blind or with a serious heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy because cats have a dietary need for taurine. Dogs naturally make the amino acid taurine, while cats must have it supplied in their diets; all Evanger’s cat foods contain taurine.

Cats also require a different form of Vitamin A. Dogs, like people, naturally manufacture Vitamin A, if Beta - carotene is supplied in the diet. Last but not least, cats require arachidonic acid, an essential fatty acids for cats. Dogs can manufacture Arachodonic Acid from Omega 3 fatty acids. Both dogs and cats require linoleic (Omega 6) and linolenic (Omega 3) fatty acids.

Why are there bones in Hand - Packed Chicken dinners?

Evanger’s special slow - cook, pressure - cook process softens the bones so they are splinter - free and easily digestible. Feel free to squeeze a bone in Whole Chicken Thighs or Roasted Chicken Drummette Dinner, you’ll see that the bone collapses instead of splintering, providing the ideal meal for your dog - safe, nutritious, and delicious. Bones add flavor and texture, and are great natural sources of crucial nutrients like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron.

Can I feed Evanger's products to my diabetic dog or cat?

Yes… Diabetic dogs and cats need to reduce carbohydrate intake while maintaining a balanced diet. Evanger’s canned diets contain so much meat (exception: Vegetarian Dinner and 100% Sweet Potato), that they can often be incorporated into the diet of diabetic dogs and cats with healthy kidneys. Diabetic dogs and cats should eat more fowl than red meat. Gold Line Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner offer dogs a balanced meal with no added carbohydrates. Similarly, Hand Packed Whole Mackerel with Gravy for cats is a delicious low - carb meal. The 8 Grain Free Game Meats and Hunk of Beef and Wild Salmon are nutrient-rich, tasty supplements or treats for diabetic dogs and cats. Please remember that diabetes is a serious medical condition that requires veterinary care. Pets being treated with insulin will require blood checks and possible insulin adjustment when changes are made to the diet.

  • Picky eater loves Evangers

My boxer has been getting Evangers canned food most all of his 8 years. I switch off different flavors. He really loves braised beef chunks, but that's unavailable at this time.

  • Good canned food for specific need(s)

    By on Top 250 Contributor

It's just chicken (parts, meat) and liver (label doesn't specify from what species). It contains no added vitamins, minerals, or carrageenan (horrible ingredient that causes inflammation which leads to a number of health ailments). I needed this food for my renal failure cat as it doesn't contain ingredients that require organs to do the extra work of transforming ingredients into usable things. The reason I gave this three stars is that it isn't anything special for what the price is. If it were organic, non GMO, and contained specifically named ingredients then I would see the price being justified. This is an average/less than average canned food. It's mixed up mystery chicken and mystery liver and contains nothing extra. If anything this food should cost less than other brands because it lacks every reason for increasing cost. My renal failure cat doesn't like this food but that's okay b/c my other kitties like it okay. Of course, my dogs would gobble it up if no kitties liked it. I don't recommend this food unless you need a food that is just meat and water. I will not buy again unless the price is drastically reduced. … more

  • For my mighty dog

My little guy loves this food. I was looking for the right size to feed him, and the 6 ounce size is perfect. There are no preservative or fillers in this dog food and it is made here in the US. They have a variety of flavors, all of which my dog loves. I recommend it highly.

My dogs love it because it's meat. Use as a topper only, because it's just protein/fat

  • Average Grain-free Food

Bought this for my German Shepherd to supplement his dry food every once in a while for variety. He liked it the first go around but soon lost interest. I would recommend this food for a "treat" meal but not for a supplement to everyday feeding. It seems to be of good quality and my dog did not have any problems with digestion.

  • no additives

Evanger's has no copper additives. The only food I have found that doesn't. New studies are proving copper additives can be fatal for some dogs. My dogs love it, and knowing that it is pure is a big plus. I mix it with the dry food, so my dogs are getting less copper.

  • Healthy Ingredients, NO CARRAGEAN! Made in USA!

    By on

I really like the limited ingredients in this food! My cats love the Evanger's Salmon, but I only give them that as a treat once in a blue moon. Some of my cats also like the Evanger's Rabbit and the Holistic Premium Pheasant. All Grain-Free, YAY!! I gave this food only 4 stars because the chicken is NOT one of their favorites, but I sprinkle forti-flora on it, (which I also get from chewy) and then they really like it. Forti-flora is a wonderful pro-biotic for cats and it helps with digestion and hairballs! It is very helpful to use Forti-Flora when transitioning cats from dry food to wet or when you are getting them to eat more single proteins and healthier low-carb diets. It is very helpful to use Forti-Flora when transitioning cats from dry food to wet or when you are getting them to eat more single proteins and healthier low-carb diets. Why got to all this trouble? Because this food is a good quality, reasonably priced, American-made cat food - made WITHOUT CARRAGEAN!! Many of the elite "expensive" brand cat-foods add carragean - no thank you! (check ingredients) I LOVE MY FUR BABIES AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THE HIGH QUALITY, LIMITED INGREDIENTS AND VARIETY OF PROTEIN OPTIONS THAT EVANGER'S PROVIDES, WITHOUT ADDING CARRAGEAN, AND AT SUCH A REASONABLE PRICE!! It may be easier to buy food that your cat instantly likes. But beware of all the unhealthy additives and GMO "vegetables", like corn, potatoes, and pea protein. No cat ever got their protein from peas in the wild!! Don't be fooled, just because your cat goobles up the food, doesn't mean it's good for them! Also many brands add tuna or another fish by-product into their chicken, lamb, or turkey. Cats love fish, especially tuna; but too much fish is NOT good for cats and is one of the leading causes for skin allergies and digestive problems. With Evanger's single source protein foods, you know what you're getting. Grain-free and limited, to no carbs. This is the best protein source for carnivores: animal protein. Do your cat a favor and feed it what nature intended - nothing more, nothing less. … more

  • Dog loved it!

Our dog loved the food, but the cats, not so much. But then, they are cats.... I love that the food is natural, and not filled with chemicals and "junk". Very happy.
