Frequently Asked Questions

Can Evanger's products help with urinary tract infections?

Yes. Struvite crystals, rock - like accretions that scrape sensitive tissues in the urinary tract, are a major cause of inflammation and infection in dogs and cats. The formation of struvite crystals is possible when urine is too alkaline. In meat, we are provided with an acidifier that is natural and promotes overall good health in dogs and cats. So increasing the amount of high quality meat consumed can acidify the urine and help prevent the formation of struvite crystals. Evanger’s offers many canned products whose sole ingredient is USDA meat. Choose from among the 8 Grain Free Game Meats, , Hunk of Beef, 100% Organic Chicken, as well as many others. These products are excellent supplements or treats for dogs and cats. For balanced meals, which contain vitamins and minerals, try our Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner for dogs; USDA certified Organic Braised Chicken Dinner, Organic Turkey with Butternut Squash, and Holistic Pheasant Dinner for cats. Of course, any dog or cat with urinary tract problems should be under the care of a veterinarian.

Can I feed dog food to my cats and cat food to my dogs?

Any Evanger’s food that is pure meat, such as the Grain Free Game Meats, Hunk of Beef, and Wild Salmon, can be fed to both cats and dogs as snacks, treats, or mixed with Evanger’s dry food, snacks, or treats. However, foods that include vitamins and minerals to make a complete balanced diet are formulated specifically for a dog or cat and should be fed to the indicated species.

Knowing the different dietary needs of dogs and cats is very important because pet owners that allow a dog to eat cat food or a cat to eat dog food could end up with a very sick pet….or worse. Illnesses do not usually happen if only a few meals are shared, but will happen if it continues on a regular basis. Incidentally, dogs are omnivores like people; they eat both meat and vegetables. Cats are obligate carnivores; they eat mostly meat. Cats have a higher protein and fat requirement than dogs. Dogs that eat cat food could end up with liver, kidney and/or pancreatic problems because cat foods are too high in protein and fat for dogs to properly metabolize. Cats that eat dog foods could end up blind or with a serious heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy because cats have a dietary need for taurine. Dogs naturally make the amino acid taurine, while cats must have it supplied in their diets; all Evanger’s cat foods contain taurine.

Cats also require a different form of Vitamin A. Dogs, like people, naturally manufacture Vitamin A, if Beta - carotene is supplied in the diet. Last but not least, cats require arachidonic acid, an essential fatty acids for cats. Dogs can manufacture Arachodonic Acid from Omega 3 fatty acids. Both dogs and cats require linoleic (Omega 6) and linolenic (Omega 3) fatty acids.

Why are there bones in Hand - Packed Chicken dinners?

Evanger’s special slow - cook, pressure - cook process softens the bones so they are splinter - free and easily digestible. Feel free to squeeze a bone in Whole Chicken Thighs or Roasted Chicken Drummette Dinner, you’ll see that the bone collapses instead of splintering, providing the ideal meal for your dog - safe, nutritious, and delicious. Bones add flavor and texture, and are great natural sources of crucial nutrients like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron.

Can I feed Evanger's products to my diabetic dog or cat?

Yes… Diabetic dogs and cats need to reduce carbohydrate intake while maintaining a balanced diet. Evanger’s canned diets contain so much meat (exception: Vegetarian Dinner and 100% Sweet Potato), that they can often be incorporated into the diet of diabetic dogs and cats with healthy kidneys. Diabetic dogs and cats should eat more fowl than red meat. Gold Line Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner offer dogs a balanced meal with no added carbohydrates. Similarly, Hand Packed Whole Mackerel with Gravy for cats is a delicious low - carb meal. The 8 Grain Free Game Meats and Hunk of Beef and Wild Salmon are nutrient-rich, tasty supplements or treats for diabetic dogs and cats. Please remember that diabetes is a serious medical condition that requires veterinary care. Pets being treated with insulin will require blood checks and possible insulin adjustment when changes are made to the diet.

  • It is just okay.

Canned food connoisseur Baby Snu here. My human provider brought this into my living space and while the first can was acceptable, with every following serving I demand she add Purebites Treat Toppers and even then I may not eat it.

  • Healthy Food:

I was so excited to find another choice for my cat's dietary needs. He absolutely loved it. However, cats become finicky so quickly, and now he does not touch it. The manufacturer is a quality company, when it comes to cat food. I spoke to the owner, and I was quite impressed when he called me back. Owners generally, have there secretary or customer service return your call. I spoke to him at great length and found him to be very helpful. I hope in time Squeaky will eat the food again.

  • Good quality product

My local pet store stopped carrying Evanger's a couple of months ago, so I was very excited to find it on Chewy AND explore some new flavors for my cats. They mainly eat turkey and chicken based canned food, so I try to supplement their diets with more exotic sources of protein. So far they've been loving grain-free quail and rabbit. I've given them buffalo and duck in the past, which they also enjoyed, and planning on ordering those in the future. I do have to mention that my cats act as if they are starving most of the time, so they are excited about pretty much any food I put in front of them.

  • Nothing but meat

    By on

Having dogs with food allergies it was nice to find a canned food with nothing but meat. I have used this brand for several years now and my dogs love it. This is the first time I've tried the quail and there are no complaints.

  • Great for Dogs with Tummy Problems...

    By on

Hi! I discovered Evangers Pheasant when my little dog was just not able to digest most dog foods very well. My vets and I decided to stay with Turkey as a meat source and then I found the Evanger Pheasant, which she loved Sadly, Evangers can no longer get the Pheasant but they substituted Quail. I was a bit nervous because she is also VERY picky. NOTHING to worry about! She really likes the Quail and I add small green peas to it for a bit of a vegie... she does not like the Evangers vegetable meal, oh well! I highly recommend this product...let your dogs enjoy!!

  • Picky huskies love it

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

One of their new faves. I've been rotating evangers toppers (rabbit, salmon, and buffalo) since my allergy-prone and picky huskies get sick of the same thing after a while. Glad to have another to add to the rotation! Also, the smaller cans are worth it for me since I only need 1/4 of that for each dog per meal (this stuff only stays for 36 hours in the fridge)

  • Our Cats Didn't Like It

    By on

We took a chance on trying this, despite reviewers who said their cats did't like some of the other flavors this company sells. Didn't work. After the first taste, the cats would sniff, do a cover-it-up scratch on the floor, and walk away. So I can't heartily recommend it, although others may have more success than we did.

My 175 lb. Cane Corso Mastiff rotates between Quail and Rabbit with his raw beef and turkey. He looks forward to this treat on top of his breakfast each day.

  • It must be Yummy!

My standard poodle snarfed it down from the first bite! It smells good. From looking at the clean dog bowl, it must also taste delicious. Yummy!
