Description

Famotidine is prescribed to treat multiple digestive disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including ulcers. These tablets may help by reducing the production of acid in the stomach and GI tract and may also help treat reflux and inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis). Customers may receive this drug under the name Pepcid.

Uses

Famotidine is prescribed to help pets who suffer from a variety of digestive disorders including ulcers, gastritis, and reflux.

Possible Side Effects

Famotidine is tolerated well in most pets, but a loss of appetite and lethargy have been reported. If a pet seems ill while taking Famotidine, call your veterinarian as soon as possible for further advice.

Drug & Food Interactions

Discuss all medications and supplements the pet is currently taking with your veterinarian prior to giving Famotidine. Some interactions have been reported with other antacids, metoclopramide, sucralfate, digoxin, and ketoconazole. Other interactions are possible. Famotidine should be given 2 hours before or after other medications have been given unless your veterinarian instructs you differently.

Precautions

Do not administer this medication if a pet has a known allergy to Famotidine or other histamine blockers. Give Famotidine with extreme caution in older animals, animals with heart, liver, or kidney disease or pregnant animals. Famotidine can sometimes cause a low white blood cell count especially in animals that are taking other bone marrow suppressing drugs such as azathioprine.

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.

NOTE: For Generic Medications, picture displayed may not depict actual product. Generic medications may vary from one order to the next by size, color and shape depending on manufacturer. Customers may receive the same drug under the name Pepcid.

FAQ

What is Famotidine?

This is a medication that is administered by mouth when your pet has certain digestive disorders such as gastritis (stomach inflammation), ulcers, and reflux.

What are the benefits of Famotidine?

  • Can help treat multiple digestive disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract including ulcers.
  • Reduces stomach acid by decreasing production of acid.
  • Also aids in the treatment of reflux and gastritis.

How is this medication given?

Give all medication orally based on your veterinarian's prescribed directions. If you do not understand how to use Famotidine correctly, call your veterinarian for further instructions.

How does this medication work?

Famotidine blocks the production of histamine in the body. Histamine is a chemical that leads to acid production in the body so acid production is decreased when this chemical is blocked.

What results can I expect?

Famotidine does not cure gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as ulcers, gastritis, or reflux but it can help decrease symptoms and help your pet to feel better. Symptoms are usually relieved quickly once Famotidine is given.

    Best move ever!

My Cairn Terrier was throwing up almost every morning.I was giving him Omeprazole, which would stop the vomiting and belly ache but it was not pro-active, he still was constantly sick. The tablets were crazy expensive. My boyfriend said, you know, he acts a like like me when I have acid re-flux.Hmm...well you can't by 10mg over the counter only 20mg - human dose, so I came here and ordered it. My vet agreed to give it a shot, obviously preventative better than after the fact. He has not been sick once since he started the Famatidine. I was so worried, all the bad thoughts, cancer, ulcers, is he going to be OK?For under $10 per month he is healthy and happy.
