Description

Felimazole treats feline hyperthyroidism, a commonly diagnosed disease in senior cats. The disease results in excess levels of thyroid hormone being produced in the thyroid gland. Symptoms can include weight loss, increased thirst and urination, vomiting, and excess activity.

Uses

Felimazole Coated Tablets (methimazole) are indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects usually occur during the first three months of treatment. They may include loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy. These typically occur within the first two weeks of treatment and may eventually stop even with continuation of treatment. Less common side effects are yellowing of the gums, skin, or eyes (jaundice) which may signify liver problems. Itching of the face, scratching, or increased bleeding tendencies may occur.

Drug & Food Interactions

Do not use in cats with hypersensitivity to methimazole, carbimazole or the excipient, polyethylene glycol. Do not use in cats with primary liver disease, renal failure, autoimmune diseases, hematological disorders or coagulopathies.

Precautions

Use of Felimazole Tablets in cats with renal dysfunction should be carefully evaluated. Reversal of hyperthyroidism may be associated with decreased filtration rate and a decline in renal function, revealing underlying renal disease.

FAQ

What is hyperthyroidism?

Cats with hyperthyroidism have a thyroid gland that is producing excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. This causes a dramatic increase in the body's metabolic rate.

What do I need to know about Felimazole Coated Tablets?

Felimazole Coated Tablets contain the active ingredient methimazole and are given to your cat every day to block the production of thyroid hormones.

How do I give Felimazole Coated Tablets to my cat?

Follow the instructions given by your veterinarian. Felimazole Coated Tablets are best given directly to your cat, but the small, sugar-coated tablets can also be hidden in the food.

What should I do if I forget to give a tablet?

Speak to your veterinarian. Do not give a double dose next time. If your cat is due to have a monitoring blood test within a couple of days of missing a tablet, make sure you let your veterinarian know as it could affect the blood results.

    Works great!

    By on

My cat was vomiting excessively (multiple times a day), and after running some bloodwork, my vet diagnosed him with hyperthyroidism. The Felimazole has worked wonders, and he now vomits rarely (only due to a hairball). I was previously getting the 5 mg tablets which I had to cut in half. Though the 2.5 mg tablets are slightly more expensive proportionally, it is worth it in my opinion to be able to give my cat just one pill a day, and to not have to cut the pills and hope that they're cut exactly in half.

    Saving money and time

    By on

As I was going to the vet's office every 45-50 days, and having to purchase 3-4 bottles at a time for two cats (5.5 pills a day), it was always a challenge to get there during office hours, and the cost involved. Chewy is saving me about 25% and I can have it shipped to my home is wonderful.

    First pharmacy order

    By on

I hadn't used the service before so I really didn't know what to expect. Filling out the form was a bit tedious as I couldn't quite get it to work properly - when I finished, it kept sending me back to enter my cat's information. I finally called, and the order was expedited! I know customer service staff are always very helpful. It did take several days to get the med, but I'm not sure if that had to do with a week-end when my vet may not have responded quickly to the request for the prescription. All in all, I would definitely use this again.

Great Price, Over week to arrive

    By on

The price is much better vs. the Vet. Same pill. Little strange ordering per pill, but I understand. If this is your first time placing an RX order make sure you are doing it 2 weeks ahead of when you will be out.

    Great product, great price.

Several of my senior cats have hyperthyroidism and take this medication, so I have to order in quantity. Other brands come in higher dosages and the pills are very hard to split evenly. This smaller dose pill means no pill-splitting and the price is about 40% less than I was paying through my vet.

Medication is in testing with my 12 year old

    By on

By no fault of Chewy, medication was on a long waiting list because of my changing from Banfield in Jenkintown, Pa to Banfield, King of Prussia, PA. My boy was out of medication for 5 days and I was upset, of course.

Is this really the name brand

    By on

I ordered 100 pills because from the previous supplier it always came in the sealed bottle from the manufacturer. I do not know if this is generic or the brand name.

The meds work as well as can be expected

    By on

The only problem is my cat is either too smart to take the pill or even with "trick" products, they aren't successful. So I have to crush it first then mix it in the wet food.

    Just what the doctor ordered.

    By on

I'm buying these pills because our veterinarian prescribed them for managing our 15 year-old cat's thyroid condition. The combination of their smooth coating and our cat's gentle disposition make them easy to administer. They have been working for almost 2 years so far and we couldn't be happier.
