Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

FAQ

Why do your products appear different at times?

Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.

Chicken Fat and Chicken Allergies:

Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.

Do you use GMO ingredients?

No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.

What is a meal? How does it compare to a fresh meat?

Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.|Weight|Senior/Less Active Per Feeding (cup)|Adult Per Feeding (cup)|Puppy Per Feeding (cup)||---|---|---|---||2 - 5 lbs|1/8 - 1/4|1/8 - 1/4|1/8 - 1/4||5 - 10 lbs|1/8 - 1/4|1/4 - 1/3|1/4 - 1/3||10 - 20 lbs|1/4 - 1/2|1/3 - 2/3|1/3 - 3/4||20 - 30 lbs|1/2 - 3/4|2/3 - 1|3/4 - 1 1/4||30 - 50 lbs|3/4 - 1 1/2|1 - 1 3/4|1 1/4 - 2||50 - 70 lbs|1 1/2 - 2|1 3/4 - 2 1/4|2 - 2 3/4||70 - 90 lbs|2 - 2 1/2|2 1/4 - 3|2 3/4 - 3 1/2||90 - 110 lbs|2 1/2 - 3|3 - 3/4|3 1/2 - 4 1/4||110 - 140 lbs|3 - 4|3 3/4 - 4 1/2|4 1/4 - 5|

    Must Taste Good!

    By on

I have a very picky, very allergic, AmStaff / Husky. She will actually eat this kibble dry like a treat! Thats a first for her! The only thing I don't like is that they use "ingredient splitting" on their label. They list two types of potatoes separately, in order to list Lamb first. It is actually more potato than Lamb

    First mate

    By on

We switched over to this food after suggested by a pet store. Needed non allergenic for an old dog with lots of allergies and cushings we rescued. Relieved a lot of issues and our younger German shepherd has thrived off this food as well. Lots of energy, no more puking and poops are nice and solid. Completely reccomend a switch.

    Wonderful dog food

    By on

I initially ordered this dog food because it was one of the very few that was suitable for my Portuguese Water Dog and his food allergies. I was very pleased with the ingredients, especially because it contained taurine. All three of my dogs absolutely love it, including my 9 week old puppy who was eating Purina Lamb and Rice puppy food. We are on our 8th large bag now and using the auto-ship option

    Cleared the crystals!

    By on

I chose this for my newly adopted rescue dog whose urine tested positive for calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals. Vet prescribed Hill's CD but I didn't like the ingredients in it so searched online for an alternative and found this one. After 4 weeks, my dog's urine is normal! Other details: my dog was very obese and has now lost about 12#. Needs to lose at least 12 more. He is getting walked for about 2 hours every day and probably had little to no exercise in his previous home. Also, my dogs share my (vegetarian) home-cooked leftovers so they're not eating just dog food and nothing else.

As always, Chewy provides outstanding service! I love the 2 day shipping, and no longer having to lug a heavy bag of dog food from the store to my car, and from the car int the house, and love the Autoship. Thanks, Chewy!

    Only recently tried this food..

    By on

So far, so good. My dogs seem to like it, and it seems to agree with them, at least up front. Will have to see how it works out long term. It smells nice and fresh and "sweet" when you open the bag - not at all like dog food smell

    Dog with allergies

    By on

Love the simple ingredients. Our old man dog is allergic to most grains and peas. Thanks for making a limited ingredient food that is sourced with high quality ingredients!! Beats making meals from scratch.
