Pregnant females increase feed intake beginning week 7 of gestation up to 25%.

Lactating females increase feeding up to 50%, feeding a minimum of 3 times per day. Feeding requirements vary according to breed and litter size. Monitor body condition of pregnant and lactating females and adjust feed accordingly.

Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

FAQ

Why do your products appear different at times?

Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.

Chicken Fat and Chicken Allergies:

Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.

Do you use GMO ingredients?

No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.

What is a meal? How does it compare to a fresh meat?

Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.

    A little disappointed

    By on

I have heard such good things on this brand and this particular formula so I was a little a disappointed when my dogs could barely chew it. It was so hard and crunchy. I will have to add water and or bone broth to soften.

    First Mate Dog Food

    By on

One of my dogs have bad food allergies. I had the vet test him so we know what kind of food to buy. First mate was on the list. Of course none of the pet stores carried it. I found it on chewy and had the food in 2 days. Great job Chewy!

Amazing ingredients - one drawback she won’t eat it

    By on

I love first mate’s products and their attention to clean well-balanced food. My Dalmatian, who is not a picky eater, won’t touch this food. When I tried to hand feed her some, she spit it out. I mixed some with other food and she picked out the other food and left this. A real shame.

    My vet recommended this food

    By on

On a recent house call visit my vet recommended this food. I have just lost one of my dogs and want to keep my surviving boy as healthy as possible, as long as possible.

    First Mate Chicken and Blueberry

    By on

Good quality, only need to give my 63# lab 1 cup twice a day, he loves it (but he’s a lab....), wish the kibble came in giant chunks so he’d eat a little slower

    Good but highly priced

    By on

My dog has severe allergies to alot of foods, trees, plants, molds human dander and other things this dog food is good as she doesn't have any reactions to it but sadly it is way over priced. so we are currently waiting for a new dog food brand we recently ordered that's still pricey but not as pricey as this one in hopes that it helps

    3 Dogs Approve!

    By on

Sought a new food for our 11 month old Great Pyrenees Rue, due to food allergies (egg, milk, soybean, rice, corn, oat, peas & salmon). The laboratory recommended First Mate Chicken with Blueberries. She enjoys it. We top it with some First Mate wet food. We've also transitioned our other 2 dogs to it who love it as well. Reordering today!

    Great dog food

    By on

My dog is allergic to just about every ingredient that's currently being packaged into the better dog foods. (Eggs Coconut Alfalfa Rosemary Sweet Potatoes Tomato Beets Apples Carrots Raspberries Pork Aspergillus Bananas Sunflower Corn Greenbeans Salmon Venison Duck Wheat! Thats all we know of) First Mate Chicken&Bluberry is the one so far that he can eat and not break out in dander, hives, and losing piles of hair. He likes the taste. His stools are solid. Love it.
