Pregnant females increase feed intake beginning week 7 of gestation up to 25%.

Lactating females increase feeding up to 50%, feeding a minimum of 3 times per day. Feeding requirements vary according to breed and litter size. Monitor body condition of pregnant and lactating females and adjust feed accordingly.

Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

FAQ

Why do your products appear different at times?

Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.

Chicken Fat and Chicken Allergies:

Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.

Do you use GMO ingredients?

No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.

What is a meal? How does it compare to a fresh meat?

Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.

Sought a new food for our 11 month old Great Pyrenees Rue, due to food allergies (egg, milk, soybean, rice, corn, oat, peas & salmon). The laboratory recommended First Mate Chicken with Blueberries. She enjoys it. We top it with some First Mate wet food. We've also transitioned our other 2 dogs to it who love it as well. Reordering today!

  • Great dog food

My dog is allergic to just about every ingredient that's currently being packaged into the better dog foods. (Eggs Coconut Alfalfa Rosemary Sweet Potatoes Tomato Beets Apples Carrots Raspberries Pork Aspergillus Bananas Sunflower Corn Greenbeans Salmon Venison Duck Wheat! Thats all we know of) First Mate Chicken&Bluberry is the one so far that he can eat and not break out in dander, hives, and losing piles of hair. He likes the taste. His stools are solid. Love it.

Our Golden Retriever has food allergies and this is the only brand out there that makes a dog food with nothing in it of which he is allergic. We fed him Orijen/Acana for 4 years and dealt with on and off diarrhea that we would have to get under control by using Endosorb and Tylan. He was allergic to some of the vegetables in Orijen but because the protein levels in that brand are high we thought he was getting less of the allergens. After a diagnosis of Masticatory Myositis (autoimmune) at age 5 and severe smelly jaw rash I knew I had to make a change to his diet and found FirstMate. He now has no symptoms of the disease and no smelly rash. So, this food has been perfect for him. Our 14 yr old lab rescue mix, however, does not like this food. She also gets chicken with her food but I now have to add liver treats and cheese for her to eat. She will happily eat Orijen without a problem. I think it partly has to do with the smell of it. It really does not smell appetizing and I only have Orijen as a comparison which smells meaty. … more

My 8 year old English bulldog has been having issues with uti’s and lack of appetite for months. She eats her food as soon as I put it down now and her uti has not come back. Win-win

I actually had to place their First Mate dry food on a higher shelf than where I normally kept the food. The dogs like it so much they helped themselves to it while I was at church! This food is high quality and suits their digestive system just fine.

My Springer Spaniel has been suffering with allergies for 4 years. I was so thrilled to find this product with no grains, pea protein or salmon oil. You just wouldn't believe the difference in his skin in just 2 weeks!

Our 3 German shepherds love this food! It's great for their skin and they seem much more active. All are over 6 years old now and act much younger. Love the fact that chewy ships the food and we receive it in 2 days!

My dog has severe allergies and with this diet has not had to take medication for over a year now. She loves it and I love that she doesn't have scabs from allergies everywhere.
