For** pregnant females** increase feed intake gradually starting at beginning of gestation period. By the end of the 9 week gestation period, an increase of 25 - 50% above normal maintenance energy is usually required.

Lactating females should be given free access to food until the kittens are weaned. Energy requirements vary depending on breed and litter size.

Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

FAQ

Why do your products appear different at times?

Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.

Chicken Fat and Chicken Allergies:

Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.

Do you use GMO ingredients?

No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.

What is a meal? How does it compare to a fresh meat?

Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.

    Good quality LID cat food

    By on

Got a sample of this after writing First mate and they were kind enough to send a few sample bags. I have an IBD cat and anyone with a fur baby with this Disease knows how hard it is to find a food they for one will eat, let alone be free of potential irritants and not needed ingredients. For one, "Chicken Meal" is not horrible, it has more nutrients actually than just "Chicken". Always look at the first 5 ingredients it will tell you all you need to know about the quality of cat food. This food is so far a hit with my IBD cat, he gets it as just a treat for right now along with First Mate Chicken LID in the can. I also sprinkle powdered pet chicken bone broth on top of his First Mate canned Got a sample of this after writing First mate and they were kind enough to send a few sample bags. the other 4%

    By on

Because there aren't many foods for cats that don't contain grain and fish, I purchased this kibble with high hopes. The fact that 96% of reviewers recommended this product also made it look very promising. Unfortunately none of my four cats (which includes one with IBD) showed much interest in it.

    Healthy food, large kibble

    By on

I mix this with American Journey kibble. Two of my cats enjoy the combo. I wish the kibble was a little smaller. I love this food for them.

    Cats not a fan

    By on

Had to order some new food as the cats were not impressed with this one. I thought the ingredients looked good however “chicken meal” as a first ingredient is a mystery for a higher end/ price food.

Cats are so picky and I am still searching but may have found the winner with Chewy. Won't buy again, they won't touch it.

    Healthy food cats like

    By on

this is good quality natural food all my cats of different ages agree to eat. It took them very short time to get used to this new food with Blueberries. This chicken formula is much better than Blue Buffalo Basics limited ingredient, because does not have such strong agonizing smell (unbearable for humans, it fills the whole room in 1 min) and stills attracts cats through high quality natural ingredient.

    My cats love this kibble

    By on

My cats are mainly fed wet food but I have some kibble out for them, too. Of all the dry foods we tried over the years this one takes the cake. Very pleased with the quality of this food.

First Mate is always First Rate

    By on Top 250 Contributor

I've used First Mate for years, both dog and cat foods. They are always readily accepted; I don't think I've ever had a critter turn up a little wet nose at First Mate chow. This brand also tends to shy away from many major allergens, making them a good choice for the gaggy sneezy itchy stinky crew. We have one of each (!)

    Is it a food?

    By on

My kitty was not sure if it is a food or what. It has not attraction to kitty and the form of kibbles is weird.
