Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

FAQ

Why do your products appear different at times?

Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.

Chicken Fat and Chicken Allergies:

Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.

Do you use GMO ingredients?

No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.

What is a meal? How does it compare to a fresh meat?

Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.

    Not for my dogs..

    By on

I’m sure this is a great food, it has everything I was looking for, grain free, limited ingredient, fish and potato, fiber over 6% and protein under 30%, and a puppy formula made by a smaller, high quality company. This checked almost everything for me, except my dogs won’t eat it, and it’s very very expensive, especially to try and feed two large breed dogs. I have a 10 month old Cane Corso who’s pushing 100lbs and a 70lbs senior Amstaff mix who is a very picky eater with allergies. Neither one of them liked this food, so I’m back to shopping to try and find something else. Wish it could have worked but it throughout the transition from their Blue Freedom to this, their tummy issues didn’t improve I’m sure this is a great food, it has everything I was looking for, grain free, limited ingredient, fish and potato, fiber over 6% and protein under 30%, and a puppy formula made by a smaller, high quality company. I’m almost done with the first bag and they’ve barely transitioned over, and I don’t think this food will go far enough for the price. It seems like a great food, but it doesn’t work for me and my dogs. … more

His ears are finally better and it's a safe grain-free

    By on

I've been using Chewy for quite some time now but I'm new to FirstMate. Due to issues with most grain free diets giving certain breeds heart issues, I was having a difficult time locating a dry food with fish that would be safe for my now 7 month old Cocker Spaniel pup. A couple recommendations from other CS owners for FirstMate indicated that it is one grain-free that is safe AND has a fish variety (to help with ear issues). When I first offered a few pieces to Kier, he was entirely uninterested (a first). With the pup watching, I offered those bites to my Shiloh Shepherd. After seeing her eat it, Kier decided to give it a try and he's been eating it ever since (still transitioning). His ears I've been using Chewy for quite some time now but I'm new to FirstMate. His ears are vastly improved and his coat hasn't been inclined to mat as my previous Cockers' coats have. The bites were definitely larger than other foods but he's large enough now that the larger kibble is not a problem. I'll keep him on FirstMate into adulthood and am now transitioning my Shiloh to it to see if it helps with her digestive issues. Note: Kier does NOT smell fishy at all. … more

Great food - our three year old Welsh Springer Spaniel still is on it. He came to us underweight a year ago and has thrived on FirstMate!

    Wonderful Grain Free Food

    By on

I transitioned my Frenchie to this food after discovering he has a chickpea allergy. Chickpea free, grain free foods are not easy to find. He loves this food and the best part is that he no longer has terrible, room clearing gas. The pieces are larger than most puppy food, but he has no problem with it. Ordered the smallest bag to start, then ordered the medium bag. Disappointed that the medium bag that arrived had expired last year. Chewy was very quick to offer a replacement bag.

    Puppy loves it

    By on

I previously had my puppy on Royal Canin, which he refused to eat. After doing extensive research I decided to try this product. I love that the ingredients are so simple and the food is Canadian sourced. Even better my puppy loves it too. I immediately switched him without tapering onto it gradually, and he didn't have any tummy troubles. It's on the expensive side, but it's high quality and 100% worth it!

    For Dogs With Allergies

    By on

For dogs with allergies this food is Great. They remove the Chicken Protein which is a big plus but still keep the fat. I have 2 dogs who are allergic to chicken and this is working Great. It is a very nutrient dense food so you will have to adjust. It is great for puppies the kibble is on the smaller size. I am also feeding the large breed as well that kibble is about the size of a quarter or a little less. I have a 15 week lab mix on that and she has no problems eating it.
