    I wish he liked it.

By keecee on Sep 7, 2021

Apparently my foster fail is extra picky with the lower fat foods. He takes all day to finish 1 serving. I added things to try and make him want it. He ate fine with the regular fat foods but after we switched to lower fat foods he refuses them until hunger finally wins out. I've never had a foster dog this picky. He is a schnauzer so he needs to keep the fat lower to avoid pancreatitis.

    First Mate Friendly Grains Fish

By Margaret on Mar 29, 2021

This is an excellent food. It is exceptionally beneficial for breeding stock because it contains none of the phytoestrogens found in peas, legumes, soy, and flaxseed. Additionally, the fish harvested for this food are fast growing small fish and as such, tend to be free of pollutants found in many fish in the ocean. Glad you are carrying this "friendly grains" brand.

    Love this food!

    By DogDad1228 on Jan 15, 2021

I work for a pet store that is proactive about the foods we carry and the quality of those foods. Recently we introduced FirstMate to our selection and had a fun little training session with a company representative. I started buying this for my pittie-beagle mutt mix (mutt said with love) and my other mixed breed pittie. My bigger guy has lots of allergies and gets chronic ear infections from something in certain foods (we think chicken) and this is one of the only foods that he does really well on. My other dog is very picky but absolutely loves this food. It's higher in protein so I get to feed less while maintaining healthy weight, a gorgeous coat, and two happy, healthy, and energetic dogs I work for a pet store that is proactive about the foods we carry and the quality of those foods. Stopped Chicken Allergies & ICHTHYOSIS GONE TOO!

By Decieved on Nov 2, 2020

My Golden Retrievers were both having intermittent diarrhea, and scratching a lot. They were taking meds intermittently to control the diarrhea. Both had been on Apoquel for the scratching without long term relief. I wasn’t happy for them having diarrhea so much, and felt bad for the itching they suffered too. I started investigating, since so many dogs, have chicken allergies, I wanted to eliminate it from their diet, on the chance they did too. Finding a high quality dog food without chicken proved daunting! Asked a dog breeder friend to help me, and she found and recommended First Mate Wild Caught Fish Meal & Oats Formula Dog Food. They have not had diarrhea since switching to this dog food! They both also had Ichthyosis. After about the second bag of this dog food, the ichthyosis was gone! Talk about shocked! Couldn’t be a coincidence since BOTH dogs skin cleared up! The scratching stopped, diarrhea stopped, AND the ichthyosis cleared up. I can’t say thank you enough to First Mate for such a great food for my pups! … more

    Great Food

By Michelle on Sep 24, 2020

I've been looking for a food with fewer, better quality ingredients and was happy to stumble across this brand. My dog hates grain-free food so I was excited to see grain-friendly options. My dog loves this food and I love that it's reasonably priced for a quality food.

Didn’t care for texture of food

By Bellaboo on Sep 29, 2020

I had hoped that the food would be more similar to the grain-free version of the food, but the shape and texture was rounded and almost powdery looking. My dogs won’t eat it, so switched back to grain free and supplement with cooked brown rice.
