Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

FAQ

Why do your products appear different at times?

Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.

Chicken Fat and Chicken Allergies:

Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.

Do you use GMO ingredients?

No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.

What is a meal? How does it compare to a fresh meat?

Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.

    PERFECT Diet

By Tiffany on Mar 10, 2021

We are breeders of European and American Golden Retrievers. It is normal for us to have puppies, 1 year old's and even seniors at any given time. This diet is absolutely the saving grace to our program. All of our dogs eat this diet and we have never had a dog turn away from the food. I read some reviews on the smell so I was curious to open the bag to smell. I don't get the fuss it smelled fine. Nothing to strong to me but it is a high quality diet. Its funny my dogs choose this food over the ProPlan I was feeding. Another great point as a breeder I don't have to do all the extra supplementing except I always add pumpkin as its a great treat and has many benefits. Also dont have to feed We are breeders of European and American Golden Retrievers. It is normal for us to have puppies, 1 year old's and even seniors at any given time. I have cut my feed bill in half!!!! and saved tons of $$$ in supplements as they are just not necessary with this diet. Anyway hope this helps. I know other breeders who swear by this diet as well. Its the next best thing to a raw diet!!! … more

    Not my dogs favorite

By Serenity on Feb 11, 2021

I changed my dog to this high calorie food because she is so active and I immediately noticed she was not eating very much of it. At first I thought it was because it was keeping her fuller longer. But then I started to notice that she was just not eating. My dog is not a picky eater at all, so after 2 weeks of watching her spit out this food or nibble at it, I was forced to change her food again. I am very disappointed because all the reviews on this brand and this blend were super awesome. Not the right kind of food for my dog.

Great food for all my dogs

By Jenny on Nov 24, 2020

I love the quality of First Mate. This food isn’t just for super active dogs, it works well for all my dogs, including my senior. I like the higher protein and fat content for them. Their skin and coat is great from the sufficient fat. I am slightly disappointed the price has gone up on this food over the past months, but maybe prices are going up on all dog foods. Because it’s higher calorie they don’t need to eat as much as other foods.

    Excellent feed

By WillinTX on Oct 16, 2020

Works great for my dog. I have no idea who thinks dog food smells nice. It's not a bad smell. This has been a great product for my kennel.

Smells bad and dogs don't want to eat it

By JenR on Apr 19, 2020

I really wanted to like this food. I have hard working cowdogs that need a LOT of calories to maintain their weight, so this food looked to fit the bill. Only problem is, it smells. Not a regular dog food smell either, it smells kinda like chemicals and metal. My dogs won't eat it unless they are absolutely starving.....and even then, they'll only eat it if I douse it in some sort of supplement to cover the smell. For now, the 2 bags I have, I've just mixed it in with a good they DO like because that way, they seem to not notice the overwhelming smell so much.

    Great food!

By Julio on Jan 8, 2020

I used this high calorie kibble on a litter of pups I weaned, excellent results! Pups kept good weight, high energy levels, good stools. At first stools were a bit runny but tapered a few days in. It's good to see a high calorie food still being produced for the needs of working dogs.

    Good kibble

By StrikerEureka on Dec 18, 2019

I recently switched to this from a much more expensive kibble. I like the ingredients and that it’s not a huge list. The kibble is a good size for training with a large dog, and when mixed with water created a little broth. I knocked off one star because it gave one out of two dogs horrible horrible gas. This dog isn’t very farty but this food just didn’t agree with him.

    Not a favorite...

By Ronnie on Oct 22, 2019

I tend to rotate through a number of kibbles. This is the first time we have introduced this into the rotation and not loving it. It meets my criteria for protein, ingredients, etc however the kibble texture is sandy and crumbly and the smell is a bit strong. The two dogs that are on this are pretty much my "garbage disposal" dogs who will devour anything. One of them clearly doesn't like it much and the other has started to drop some weight on it. Not sure that I will be able to finish the bag and likely will not keep it in the rotation if this is the norm for this product.

    Raising a Lab puppy

By CanineTrainer on Sep 3, 2019

I have been raising a Lab puppy while on the road and living out of my car, staying with friends. My breeder friends were helping to provide food as space was limited in my car. While they were feeding high quality foods (same protein fat ratio and some more expensive than FirstMate), my pup has seemed to gain weight best on this one. The owners of FirstMate are very passionate about providing a high quality food and are aware of the current challenges in sourcing ingredients and potential health issues related to grain free foods. Check out their website!

Excellent for High Energy Working Dogs

By VogueGermanPinschers on Jul 17, 2019

This kibble is excellent. Although it is NOT recommended, I switched ‘cold turkey’ from another high end kibble that earlier this year changed their formula — and caused consistent diarrhea. I did this due to having this MAJOR digestive issues with the previous kibble. By the 2nd day of feeding, ALL the dogs were producing solid stool. I highly recommend this kibble for working dogs. I was shocked at how quickly the dogs adjusted positively to First Mate. The 32% protein, 20% fat is perfect for my working breed. Very pleased with First Mate 32/20. Thank you for manufacturing our dog kibble. A Sincere Thank You. Best to All at First Mate and Chewy.
