Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

FAQ

Why do your products appear different at times?

Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.

Chicken Fat and Chicken Allergies:

Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.

Do you use GMO ingredients?

No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.

What is a meal? How does it compare to a fresh meat?

Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.

Excellent for High Energy Working Dogs

    By on

This kibble is excellent. Although it is NOT recommended, I switched ‘cold turkey’ from another high end kibble that earlier this year changed their formula — and caused consistent diarrhea. I did this due to having this MAJOR digestive issues with the previous kibble. By the 2nd day of feeding, ALL the dogs were producing solid stool. I highly recommend this kibble for working dogs. I was shocked at how quickly the dogs adjusted positively to First Mate. The 32% protein, 20% fat is perfect for my working breed. Very pleased with First Mate 32/20. Thank you for manufacturing our dog kibble. A Sincere Thank You. Best to All at First Mate and Chewy.

    Our dogs love it!

We got it for our pups. They love it and they are healthy and active. Their fur coats, eyes, and skin radiates good health. They always take time out of their very busy play schedule to eat their puppy food.

    Unsure about this brand

    By on

I'm not saying this isn't a good food. It's different from other brands I've tried. Firstly, it's an extremely oily kibble with a somewhat "sticky" residue. As it is so oily, I'm concerned with rancidity. It's also very dense, so be prepared to cut down on individual portions. The dogs seem to doing well so I can't really complain about the quality other than the above. Because of my concern about storage, I probably won't be ordering it again.

Stinky, and not my dogs favorite

    By on

Love First-Mate's grain friendly formulas, but they don't have the right ratios for my dog. Decided to try the high performance food, and it was okay, but my boy wasn't a fan of it and it smells strongly of fish.

    So Far So Good...

I will edit my review after my pups have been on this food a bit longer. The first thing I noticed when I opened the bag was that the food itself had very little odor and was extremely dense (compared to my dogs old food). What spur me into trying this feed is that 2/3 of my dogs have sensitive stomachs but also require high calories due to activity level and being farm dogs. Unfortunately their energy requirements meant I was feeding 4-6 cups per dog per day of our previous food. This feed averages 100+ calorie difference from most of the other dog foods, meaning I will be able to cut their feed back to 3 cups per day and because of the quality it should cause no stomach upsets. None of my dogs are picky eaters, they would probably eat a tire if I served it in pieces and put it in their bowls. Time will tell but so far I am very pleased. I am constantly getting compliments on how healthy my dogs look, weight and coat. My dogs are: 12 year old Labrador 1 cup PER DAY, 6 year old Lab mix 2 cups per day (down from 4 daily), and 7 month old GSD mix pup 3 cups per day (down from 5). … more

My puppy is just finishing the bag of this provided by the breeder. He loves it! I ordered it based on the breeder recommendation and am happy with it. I haven't opened my new bag I ordered yet, but soon!
