Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

FAQ

Why do your products appear different at times?

Our products contain natural ingredients without the addition of artificial coloring or binders. As a result, you may note variation in the appearance of our products between batches.

Chicken Fat and Chicken Allergies:

Our bodies and our pet’s bodies react differently with proteins and fats. An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with. Our chicken fat is free of chicken protein and will therefore not cause a reaction for those animals with a chicken allergy.

Do you use GMO ingredients?

No, FirstMate and Kasiks do not contain GMO ingredients.

What is a meal? How does it compare to a fresh meat?

Chicken meal is a concentrated source of chicken protein in which most of the moisture and some of the fat has been removed. Meals such as these provide nearly 4 times more protein than the fresh ingredients.

    No more stink

    By on

We switched to First Mate from another brand in a search for a high quality food that did not cause stinky gas/poop or feed yeast that sometimes grows in bulldogges wrinkles and paws. This is the best food. When our puppy has an accident in the house, we often don't even realize until we actually see it because there is no stink.

No more skin and digestive problems

    By on

Highly recommend this food! My Greater Swiss Mountain Dog had digestive problems and skin problems. He was on a ZD prescription dog food and also needed medicine to control his problems. After 3 months on this food, the skin and digestive problems are gone. Now no medicines, and no expensive prescription dog food. I highly recommend this dog food.

Vet recommended but dog hates it

    By on

My Great Pyrenees has terrible skin allergies to the point she bites her skin raw, the hair galls out and she has little red bumps on her skin. I don't lile giving her apoquil, but I don't have a choice. Cytopoint shots don't work for her so my vet recommended First Mate Chicken Meal with Blueberries. My dog won't eat unless she is very hungry. Since I've had her on this her stools are like pudding and sometimes like brown water. I've had her on this for a month. I guess I'll have to take her back to the vet.

    Dog loves it.

This is great food. I bought it for my rescue after trying a few other brands, and this is the keeper. What I love about it, - Her fur has gotten so much softer and shinier since switching - Very dense food - this bag actually lasts a while (as a 58lb lab, I give her ~2c a day( - Freezes wonderfully. I mix her meal with some water and peanut butter and put it in a large Kong overnight. She'll work on it for around an hour! Other food she'd give up - it wasn't as enticing. But this holds its shape, and smells great. Awesome way to occupy. - Stools are regular and solid. No more soft poops like we kept having with other brands. All in all - a bit pricey, but has worked really well for This is great food. I bought it for my rescue after trying a few other brands, and this is the keeper. Not fresh.

    By on

I have used FirstMate in the past and my dog loved it and it smelled fresh. This bag smelled old. My dog did not care for it either. I have since switched to Chewys brand of dog food.

    A lifesaver....

My 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd has an incredibly sensitive stomach and it has been so difficult to find a good that agrees with him. We’ve struggled with him vomiting and having soft stools since we got him. We saw multiple vets who gave us many different suggestions on what the problem could be. We tried about 5 different foods, tried feeding him more, tried feeding him less, gave him probiotics, pumpkin, everything. Then one day I was at a local pet store when the employee there suggested that I feed him a higher protein and lower calorie food, such as FirstMate. That same day, I stopped feeding him Taste of the Wild and started him on FirstMate because he was at a really tough point - he My 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd has an incredibly sensitive stomach and it has been so difficult to find a good that agrees with him. The day after I started feeding him FirstMate, I saw a huge improvement. The most notable being that he was having a normal bowel movement and he was no longer gassy! I can’t believe that all of this time I was just trying to feed him the wrong types of food! This is a great, high protein food that agrees with his digestive system and I am so glad that I stopped into the pet store that day! It’s a little pricier, but it’s 100% worth it! … more

Wonderful formula for our 8 month old pup

    By on

We tried Blue Buffalo Adult formula but our 8 month puppy wasn't into it after a while. We also noticed his stools were loose and a bit watery. After switching to First Mate we have had amazing results! Solid and healthy looking stools and one happy guy! Though higher price point, we give our pup 1 cup instead of 1 1/2 cup. Higher percent of protein makes him more full. For treats we also give him duck Cadet duck treats and Newmans cranberry heart biscuits which makes for one very happy pup!
