Pregnant females increase feed intake beginning week 7 of gestation up to 25%.

Lactating females increase feeding up to 50%, feeding a minimum of 3 times per day. Feeding requirements vary according to breed and litter size. Monitor body condition of pregnant and lactating females and adjust feed accordingly.

Transition Instructions

When transitioning to our dry food from another brand, we typically recommend a 7-day transition period. Begin by introducing a small amount of FirstMate with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the amount of the new food, decreasing the amount of the old food over the course of a week until they are eating exclusively FirstMate.

    Excellent choice

    By on

I always feed highly-rated, quality food and try and stay up on those ratings. My older doxie was having some constipation issues so I spoke with my food store person and she recommended changing to FirstMate because the protein in the food I was using was largely plant derived where here it's meat-based. Did the trick. All I feed now. Worth a try. Note it comes in small bites and regular.

Good food but INCORRECT SODIUM content stated

    By on

I got this food for my little dog that has food sensitivities because is doesn’t have a lot of ambiguous ingredients & she needs a relatively low sodium content. Be aware that the SODIUM CONTENT IS INCORRECT in answer to a question is incorrectly stated as 0.15% which would be around 40 mg per 100 kcal. This is not correct for an “as fed” or % of dry mater. I contacted First Mate & was told the sodium content is 84 mg per 100 kcal. BIG difference. Still not that high considering other foods.

Kibble smell not consistent but dog approved

    By on

We have a cocker spaniel 5 month old puppy. We are feeding this because our other dog eats the larger bites chicken FirstMate food and is doing well on it. Cockers are prone to allergies and Luna came to us with lots of scratching and vaginitis while eating Proplan. She has been eating FirstMate for the last 3 months and doing better on it with less scratching and less burping/spit ups but her digestive issues are not resolved. We are presently trying the FirstMate Fish small bites to see if that makes a difference. The strange thing we consistently notice with FirstMate is the smell of each bag varies. We are presently trying the FirstMate Fish small bites to see if that makes a difference. The strange thing we consistently notice with FirstMate is the smell of each bag varies. The first chicken kibble we ordered smelled like regular kibble, more starchy smelling than meat but not unpleasant. A couple bags since then seriously smell like poop, not pleasant. The dogs don’t seem to mind but I do when their breath smells of it. My cocker plays with my Golden Retriever and then both of their faces smell poopy. It is not pleasant at all. I just have to wonder what is happening in manufacturing for the kibble to smell like that. So...right now we are transitioning over to the fish kibble to try and get away from the chicken poopy smell. We have fed Orijen/Acana and Taste of the Wild, both of which have ingredients my Golden is allergic to so we were led to trying FirstMate because of those allergies. We have also tried raw meet food and our Golden gets diarrhea from it. On paper, FirstMate is the perfect kibble but I do wonder about their quality control. … more

Frenchie & 2 chihuahuas found this delicious. The bitesize provides that all my adult dogs can eat same food.

    First try for me

    By on

This is a new brand for me - the MN rep told me all about this food and it sounded like something I wanted to try for my pups. I ordered small bags of three different First Mate foods. I have used the chicken the most but also use the other two choices. My dogs really like these chicken and blueberry bites. Very happy with the quality.

I love how small the kibble is & Munchkin loves the flavor! We only just started eating it this week, fingers crossed the blueberry instead of pea works! My 6lb Xolo has a major allergy to Peas.

    Best Wholesome Food!!! No peas!

    By on

This was such a great find for my French Bulldog with severe food allergies. After allergy testing it was the only food we could find that didn't have pea protein, the root source of his food allergies. And my vet confirmed that pea protein is a cheap way companies are boosting the protein content and staying "wholesome". I recommend trying it and seeing how it can change your dogs life.
