    Good for kidney issues

By Noelle on Dec 13, 2019

I was trying to get my dog to eat the prescription food for kidney disease, but she would spit it out on the floor. This food has lower protein and phosphorous than other foods, not quite as low as the prescription food but close enough that my vet is happy we found something my dog will actually eat I was trying to get my dog to eat the prescription food for kidney disease, but she would spit it out on the floor. Wanted better quality food for dog with kidney disease

    By on

I recently received my first bag of FirstMate so I can't tell you more than my dog seems to like it. I was told that my dog would have to eat Purina NF prescription dog food for the rest of her life due to kidney disease (she is not overweight) because high quality food contains a high protein content, which apparently makes the kidneys work harder. But the quality of the Purina NF prescription is poor and very expensive. So I am taking a chance on FirstMate because of it's high quality ingredients and relatively low protein as compared to other quality dog foods. It's actually a little less expensive and my dog seems to like it better too.

Noticing a change in my dog already

    By on

The last bag of food I bought was only a change in flavor and it didn’t agree with my dog. I am still in the process of introducing this food and I can already see good changes in my dog. Her coat is shiny and she is more playful. She has less stomach problems and she wants to eat again. Only drawback is the price and no autoship discount but if this is the food that is best for my baby then I will pay.

Firstmate actually answers their phone :-)

As a Doberman owner, my breed needs a low copper diet. Under 15 PPM. For my senior dog, I needed a grain free food with a low protein level but also keeping the copper level low. This was not easy to find. I searched for hours and finally found this formula but looking at the copper content, it was not near the bottom which concerned me greatly. So I called the company's 800 # and they were wonderful to talk to. They looked up their actual copper content and it was 13.2 PPM, under the 15 PPM which eased my mind greatly. Thank you Chewy for carrying this and thank you Firstmate for being there.

    So far so good

    By on

I was looking for a senior grain free dry dog food that was also NOT chicken or turkey and weight management. So far so good... diarrhea has stopped and my 13 yr old Lab eats it usually. Whether it will help with weight management is too early to tell. Thanks for helping me find it!

Great for dogs who need special kidney diets

    By on

I have 2 senior shelties who both have kidney issues. I have started them on this food and so far they are doing well on it. I refuse to feed my dogs subpar, vet prescription diets, as those foods do not contain quality ingredients. This food has low phosphorus which is what is recommended for compromised kidneys. Yes, potato is the first ingredient and the food has overall low protein, but for my senior dogs it is what they need at this stage of their life with the health conditions they have.

For Dogs with MULTIPLE food allergies

    By on

My dog almost died in 2013 from food allergies. He cannot eat Kelp, Sweet Potato, Peas, Soy, Gluten, Beef. Finally a food I can rotate to keep him safe from his allergies.

    Good product!

Kibbles are larger than I expected, but my geriatric Dachshunds seem to be tolerating it well.
