    Good for kidney issues

By Noelle on Dec 13, 2019

I was trying to get my dog to eat the prescription food for kidney disease, but she would spit it out on the floor. This food has lower protein and phosphorous than other foods, not quite as low as the prescription food but close enough that my vet is happy we found something my dog will actually eat I was trying to get my dog to eat the prescription food for kidney disease, but she would spit it out on the floor. Dog food for large senior dog

    By on

I look for Dog food, specially with low allergy-type fish from N America, also with additional vegetable/fruit containing lots of fiber, made in a Canadian plant, not China or overseas.

    Delicious and Helpful

My dogs love Firstmate. So many diet foods are not big hits with our guys. This was a very pleasant find and, we can already see a difference in their weight.

    Great food for seniors

    By on

Since we switched to this food for our senior akita/shepherd mix (11yrs) He has been doing so much better. His coat shines beautifully and he lost a bit of weight. I usually mix it with a little extra omega 3 and some wet food. We also started to give it to our two little seniors and they like it as well.

    Fast Delivery

    By on

It was really nice to have a company promise that it would be a quick delivery and it was. Needless to say I've been disappointed by some of the other delivery history at other places I've ordered but chewy.com came through and I received a quality product that my dog loves.

    Lower protein for older dogs

    By on Top 250 Contributor

Bought because of the lower protein recommended for older dogs....less strain on the kidneys and liver. Must be very tasty because my cats keep trying to take if from Matrix, my 11 year old Catahoula. Finally started giving them one or two for treats. Matrix has no stomach upsets and eats every bit of it (mixed with her organic canned turkey). Her coat is beautiful and she is healthy.

Great food for a 1 - Kidney Dog in Renal Failure

    By on

Our dog had a kidney removed and the other - well, we've been told it boarders renal failure so protection is VITAL. He's a 5-year old Akita, about 95lbs. After several hours of research this dog food - specifically the Senior - had the best phosphorus levels for a grain-free, high quality dry dog food - exactly what we needed. I use a combination of this and a Castor and Pollux Tripe Wet Dog food (Half and Half). After keeping him on a steady diet, his kidney values seem consistent. It's a bonus that he loves it!

    Great for allergies

We were worried about the use of chicken fat for both our cat and dog and are relieved this hasn't been a problem. First Mate's FAQ page explains: "...An allergy is caused by the bodies reaction with the protein of what we’ve come in contact with.
