My Pitt mix is around 50 pounds and was prescribed 40mg daily for his severe separation anxiety. Like others have said, I was told it could take 4-6 weeks to kick in, and during that time he definitely got worse. I called the vet due to his severe panting and they said give it 8 weeks. I did as they said, and he did eventually get better but do think 2-3 months is the sweet spot. Ever since then, he has been much less stressed when we leave him alone. I highly recommend these, but note they do take time to get the results you are seeking.
The pharmacy got things mixed up and sent me someone else’s order. No big deal. Except when they verified that I had in fact been sent someone else’s order, not only did they want me print a label and take a trip to ups to ship it back to them, there was no compensation to make up for the fact that I still didn’t have my pills yet. No expedited shipping on my order or a discount or anything. Therefore, while we were waiting for them to ship my actual order, we ran out of these pills for my dog and he had to go cold Turkey for several days and started freaking out, totally on edge, peeing on everything all over the house and causing us a lot of frustration. The pills work when given regularly, they take the edge off my dog’s anxiety, he doesn’t anxiously pee everywhere and I notice a complete difference. I like the online process and that they are much less expensive than going to my local Walgreens to get these pills but I wish they had better customer service.
These pills are helping my dog who had a LOT of issues when he came to me. Separation anxiety and really needing to protect me from everyone just being a few of his issues. Other means of control are also being used but I'm doing what I need to so he stays away from that certain 'needle" and can live out his life in full.
I have a male whippet who's currently 6 YO. He has suffered from separation and other forms of anxiety his whole life. I just tried to work around it, until early this year. He suddenly came down with a sound phobia, where sounds in his home that never bothered him before, suddenly terrified him and gave him shaking/panting fits on and off, all day. I had thought about doing something like prozac in the past, but... this sealed the deal. He couldn't live like this. Here's where I think things can go wrong with the drug... The official claims I saw online and what the Vet said, was that it usually takes a few weeks to kick in. I had seen a few people say it took longer and they can get way worse in the 'loading period' before they get better. I asked the Vet about this, and he said he had not heard of that. Well, he got way worse, and after three weeks, just stayed that way. My heart sank of course. I think this is probably where a lot of people give up and take them off it. That can be a big mistake. Luckily I talked with a few people online who had gone through using it with their dog, and they prompted me to stick with it. They said their dog got way more paranoid at first, and it took 8 weeks or 3 months, to really see positive results. There were times I never thought he'd get better and he was so bad, I honestly thought he'd gone insane. But sure enough, by about 8 weeks he started getting better, and it kicked in fully by 3 months. So my advice... Stick with it for at least 3 months. Make sure you give the exact same amount at the same time, each day. Do not miss any, or mess with the dosage. It has to be the same. If you don't do that, they will go through withdrawal, or go into the loading period all over again if you increase it. They may also really lose their appetite. I had a very hard time getting him to eat for about a month. Right now he's on 25 mg for his weight and can take up to 35. He still reacts to sounds, but the fear has gone from 10 to about 2-3. He will also take treats, even after hearing a noise, and you can work with him on training. I also tried gabapentin for a while alongside the prozac, but I read bad things about long term use, and I don't think it helped much anyway. So stick with it and just be prepared for a tough period in the beginning. Good luck.
My pup has horrible separation anxiety to where our neighbors complained about her barking when we weren’t home. Even though we never left her home for more than 1-2 hours and that rarely happened. However, since being prescribed this medication she has done a complete turn around and her and I both are calmer about leaving her home. lol.
I was pleasantly surprised when it showed this morning Gypsy medication would not be here until 11/20. I open the door to put her out and box was on the porch. Very fast delivery. Thank you Chewy.
The ‘Prozac’ takes the edge off my poodle mix so that we can love him more! My vet recommended this as he is anxious about separation, overly stimulated the whole day, etc. He is much better when he gets his medication.
It's been 4 weeks since my dog has been taking Fluoxetine for anxiety. No results as of yet but I was told it may take up to 8 weeks and if anxiety persists they can increase dose.
chewy offers a really great price on prozac for my dog. the low shipping requirement made it even more affordable for me. my dog is a total sweetie, but as a young german shepherd, she was too much for a couple of adoptive families, as she would start bouncing off the walls. i have shepherd experience, so now with a little pharmacological help, greta will have an even happier home.
I wish I had remembered name- there was a mixup with my order (my fault). She was so kind and she shared some advice for my anxious dog. I was honestly impressed. As for the medication, my dogs anxiety has decreased by about fifty percent. We are going to keep him on it.
