What keeps it cold? Water evaporation or chemical reaction? And what size for an 80!lb Olde English Bulldogge
Answer by ChewyJun 08, 2021
There are no chemicals whatsoever. There is a thin layer of resin, in between the two layers of PVA. When this is wet the resin is what cools the vest down. Once the water evaporates, simply re-wet and use. To find the best fit we recommend measuring your pet and comparing the measurements to the sizing chart that is available in the “Size” tab, next to the “Description” tab, just under the product. If your pet falls somewhere between two sizes, we advise ordering the larger of the two.

How long does the vest stay cool? I’ve seen other cooling vests that you have to wet first and they usually only stay cool for about 20min on really hot days.
Answer by ChewyJun 08, 2021
It all depends on the external temperature and the sun. It ranges from 4-6 hours. Once the vest starts to dry, simply re-wet for another 4-6 hours of cooling sensation.

Can this vest be reactivated with salt water instead of regular water? And is it okay if my dog went swimming in salt water with this vest on, would it ruin the vest?
Answer by ChewyAug 05, 2021
A pet may swim in the ocean or salt water pool with this vest on but the manufacturer recommends to wash it with mild dish soap and regular water before letting it dry. The salt, if left on the material, may ruin the PVA fabric.

Would they be able to wear this with a harness?
Answer by ChewyJun 13, 2022
While there is no harness hole on the Ice Vest, the vest is lightweight & thin enough that it can comfortably fit underneath a harness. We have The Ice Band cooling bandana will also not interfere with a harness.

Velcro does not last

I bought this at the beginning of summer and it has not lasted. I live in Colorado so it can get hot and it always does in August. I started to use the vest in June, everyday for my two chihuahua/ Jack Russell Terrier mixes. They have short coats but chihuahuas can have some trouble self temperature regulating. I had to get one vest replaced because the velcro literally just came right off. It doesn't last, not worth it. Get one that clips instead.

I purchased this for my dad’s dog in July. They live in AZ and the dog was struggling on their walks. He just told me the Velcro is coming off. Besides that he loves it and says the rest of the vest has been very helpful!

Sizing inconsistencies

Ordered a medium based on the size chart but it was WAY too big so I ordered the small even though I knew it wouldn't fit if the size chart was correct and I was right, it was way too small. The medium, if I jimmy it up to make it stay on, does keep my pup cool but it's not reasonable for long term so I'll continue looking for one that works and fits. It does dry into a very stiff piece of fabric though (pic shown is them hanging - small on the right and medium was folded while wet so it dried folded) so I'll also be looking for one that can be put away.

WOW

It has been one day with this cooling vest and I can cry with relief! I have an 80lb, 13 year old golden retriever (bought the 3XL). We live in New England where the summers are hazy hot and humid. We put the vest on her for the first time today all panting and over heating has stopped. I’m sure there will still be days that she spends the day under the AC but she seems so much more RELAXED. so much relief I can’t even put it in words.

Decent if you get it wet all the way through

It's hard to tell how much of a difference the vest makes in terms of the dog's body temperature, but I've had decent success keeping it wet. First, make sure you get it SOAKED through. Yes, the material is stiff when dry. If you wet it and wring it out a few times and then wet it again, it will soften and stay wet longer. Don't wring it all the way out the last time like the instructions say; wring it out just enough so it doesn't drip. The material is very sponge-like in how it performs, so it can hold water without making too much mess. Two, the bag it comes in says you shouldn't store the vest there (it even says to throw the bag out, but why? Seems wasteful), but it's actually a good place to keep the vest wet if you're starting a hike without the vest on. In between use, I dry the vest fully before storing to prevent mold. Using the methods described above, I took my dog on a 3 hr hike in full sun and was able to keep the vest wet by spraying it a few times with my hydration bladder along the way. My first time testing it, we used it for 30 minutes in and out of sun and I fully wrung it out before putting it on, and the vest was almost totally dry on top (but still damp on the underside) at the end of the walk. So letting the vest absorb water seems to be the key to making it last longer. Sizing: The XL almost doesn't fit around my 47-lb mutt's girth but it's too big around the neck. I guess this was designed with thicker necked dogs in mind. I also bought the bandana from this brand. Hard to tell how the two products compare in terms of effectiveness, but the bandana is easier to put on and sizing is better.

Cooper wouldn't take it off.

Heat here (Southern Texas) is grueling. 1st Time using this, he didn't want to take off. He's ½ Australian Shepperd and ½ Border Collie. He has that AS undercoat. During the summer, he'd actually rather stay inside; too hot. I don't understand how this keeps cool, but it does. He loves it and loves to go outside more. Do you have one for people? LOL

Cooling vest for paw boy.

Good idea but material gets very rough when not wet. Great for a dog always in the water. I just wanted it to be cool for my dog while walking -material very stiff and uncomfortable for my paw boy. My philosophy-“ If its good for me as a human mom , it should be good for my paw boy”. Sorry but my skin could never tolerate the material.

I like this, my dog stays cooler but... I should have gone with the 4x she's uncomfortable in it. How do I go about a return and the price difference to a larger size?
