Transition Instructions

Many pets require up to 7 - 10 days to adjust to a new food because their intestinal tracts contain unique bacteria and enzymes that need to adapt to the proper digestion of a new food. Follow these guidelines for changing your pet’s current dry or canned food to Halo dry or canned food:

Days 1 - 3: 75% old food, 25% Halo Days 4 - 5: 50% old food, 50% Halo Days 6 - 7: 25% old food, 75% Halo Days 8+: 100% Halo

If you have a pet with a sensitive stomach, transition them even more slowly (over 2 to 3 weeks) to avoid digestive upset.

If your dog or cat experiences digestive upset during the transition (poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea or soft stool, etc.), return to the new food amount that was not causing problems and keep them there for a few more days before continuing with the diet change. Once your pet is eating all Halo if you change between the flavors, consider a 2 or 3 day transition to minimize stomach upset.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is canned food bad for my pet’s teeth?

No. While many vets recommend dry food to "keep teeth clean and healthy" it is a fact that many pets do not chew their food well enough to get any abrasive cleaning action from dry food. Whether you feed dry or canned food the single most important thing for dental health is tooth brushing.

Why does Halo refer to its products as natural?

Because it is! AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) defines "natural" pet food as having ingredients from ONLY plant, animal or mined sources. These foods cannot be highly processed or contain chemically synthetic ingredients, such as artificial flavors, preservatives or colorings.

Why does Halo refer to its products as holistic?

The holistic viewpoint that Halo has stems from the belief that health is achieved by focusing on the whole body through natural living. Halo believes that the quality of ingredients a pet eats is the foundation of overall well-being but that elimination of harsh chemicals from food, treats and the environment is also critical to achieve optimal health.

Why does Halo use so much egg and peas in their formulations?

Halo uses eggs and peas as an additional source of highly digestible protein to support protein levels in all formulations. Halo does not use meat meal as a concentrated source of dried protein and uses only whole real meat ingredients. It is more difficult to achieve very high protein levels when using whole real meat instead of a meat meal. We feel the eggs and peas are healthier alternatives to meat meal.

Why does Halo avoid rice and corn in their foods?

Halo defines corn and white rice as "fillers". These are carbohydrates that may raise blood sugar levels rapidly and create hormonal signals that may have negative long term effects on metabolism and weight gain. Corn and rice based diets may also contribute to chronic symptoms of maldigestion, such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. Halo makes healthier carbohydrate choices by using whole grains such as barley and oats and vegetables like sweet potatoes. These carbohydrates are nutrient-dense because they supply energy as well as high levels of fiber for digestive health and high levels of vitamins and minerals for overall health.

About Halo Wet Cat Food

America's Best Loved Holistic Brand
Holistic. Whole. Humane.

Holistic. Whole. Humane.

Halo is committed to providing no less than the best holistic recipes to satisfy your cat’s carnivorous cravings. Their wet cat food combines pure, natural ingredients like whole meat, poultry and fish plus non-GMO fruits and vegetables for delicious, more digestible meals. Following a whole meat philosophy, Halo never uses animal by-products or meat meals—just the real, whole proteins your cat needs to thrive.

Superior Digestibility

Halo believes that whole meat equals a whole lot more digestibility. As obligate carnivores, cats need meat, not just parts of animals that you wouldn’t consider to be meat. When your pet gets whole proteins instead of rendered meats like chicken meal or fish meal, they’re getting optimum nutrition that’s easier for their body to digest. And that means they can get the full benefits of each nutrient-rich ingredient.

What's in Your Cat's Bowl?

With Halo, you won’t see a meat meal hiding anywhere in the ingredients, and there’s no corn, wheat, wheat gluten, rice or artificial colors, preservatives or flavors. Here’s what you will find:

Holistic Whole Meat: Salmon, whitefish, chicken or turkey that's slow-cooked provides a more digestible source of protein with up to 16 times less ash than rendered meat.

Non-GMO Produce: Fruits and vegetables from farms that refuse to use genetically modified seeds that rely heavily on chemical fertilizers and herbicides to produce crops.

  • So far so good

I was sceptical about the brand in general, but i was sold on the ingreadients. I usually buy Weruva double dip, ziwi for beef, some sardines from Tiki occasionally ( they don’t like their meat options, just sardines), holistic select and Farmina. I have 4 cats, two of them are picky. So to mix things up I bought this one, I researched too (no known recalls etc) and the consistency seemed to be what I needed. Empty plates, they like it for now. Hope this helps

  • Whiskers likes this enough I can sneak his medication in it!

I never found a wet food my cat loved. And there was no way he’d let me squirt the medication he needed 2x day directly into his mouth. A neighbor gave me a can of this Halo food, which her cat “adores.” Well, incredibly, so did Whiskers!!! I am amazed and so happy that he will take the prednisone... (I give him abt 1 TBL of food mixed w dose of chicken flav med. He licks the bowl, (so I know he gets it all!) Then I give him the rest of the can. Btw, the food has visible veg— ie green bean bits — which Whiskers likes. Only criticism: They should lose the few hard little peas he always leaves on the side :)

  • My cats wont eat it and now I have an expensive case that wont be eaten

I wanted to provide my cats with less processed grain free quality food but they won't come near it. They would prefer the cheap gravy lovers junk food. They lap up the gravy and leave the processed meat. I would like to ask the mfg to make Cat Gravy with no meat. It would sell like CRAZY.....

My very picky, bladder problematic, indoor, neutered, 9 yr old, male cat loves Spots Stew! He is usually extremely picky about wet food. Typically he does NOT like patte or anything similar. Normally, he begs for dry food after two days of feeding him wet/can food(we have tried almost every brand of wet cat food). Before Spots Stew, he was getting fed top shelf, only purchased at veterinary clinics dry food. He would not eat it unless it was watered down (no matter the brand of dry food). Although I was reluctant to try this new diet of wet food (since we have tried to switch him to wet food multiple times and failed each time – a lot of wasted money in other words) I decided to try one My very picky, bladder problematic, indoor, neutered, 9 yr old, male cat loves Spots Stew! Although I was reluctant to try this new diet of wet food (since we have tried to switch him to wet food multiple times and failed each time – a lot of wasted money in other words) I decided to try one more time and to not give up. I was extremely worried that his urinary tract problems would return. Also that he wouldn't like it, or that he would want his dry food again (sigh- more wasted money). I work 12-hour shifts, and if his urinary tract was to get blocked while I was at work, he would have to suffer until I got home (indoor, neutered, old, male cats can die within 12 to 24 hours after their urinary tract gets blocked FYI). That is why this was a very big deal for both of us. In conclusion: He begs for spots stew all day every day and has every day since we switched from dry to wet food, over two months ago. He will never be back on dry food, and his urine and appetite problems are no more! Thank you, Halo team! ((We also LOVE that you guys produce the food in the USA))! Halo has gained a loyal customer! Please keep up the awesome quality of food that you provide for animal lovers like myself. … more

  • Halo chicken recipe grain-free

Both kitties really like it. It can be a challenge introducing a new food, but not an issue at all for either feline. Each has turned up their nose and walked away from different foods before, particularly salmon and duck formulations, but not this one.

  • I needed healthier food

    By on

I found spots stew by Halo on an online search for healthy cat food because two of my three cats were vomiting frequently and I would find really hard stools in the litter box. Spot's Stew had a better than average smell and had real peas and carrots! I noticed a change after one week on Halo's spot stew. The litter box is a better place as well. I still add some of the junk food as a compromise but all of the other healthy food brands I attempted were rejected completely! My cats still like the cheaper cat food I can find in the local grocery store but my cats rarely vomit and the poop is normal healthy poop! I hope to wean out the junk food completely.

  • my cats still love it, but the texture can be weird sometimes

Both of my cats who are picky with wet food love spots stew. We're at the point where we're just alternating between this and one other brand that they like. They even eat the peas and carrots, and I love that I can see real whole food in there. They also don't usually like pate, but I just dice it up small with the can lid and they don't mind :) What I don't love is that every few cans or so is a weird mushy texture. It smells fine so I still give it to them, and they still eat it, but it does put me off a bit. If they didn't love it so much and weren't so picky with other kinds I've tried I would have probably switched, but they seem fine so it doesn't seem like anything is wrong with it content Both of my cats who are picky with wet food love spots stew. I recently adopted 2 cats from a shelter after not having to purchase any cat food for over 3 years... wow... all the choices. I only want to feed my indoor-only cats the very best natural foods to give them the best chance at healthy living. Their coats are so soft now They eat it up like treat food! I rotate between salmon and chicken for variety. Please continue stocking theses cat foods

  • Disgusted and disappointed.

    By on

Well I am very disappointed in this product. It is obvious by the consistency that you have changed the recipe. This is not even close to a pate it is the most disgusting mess and my cats won't even touch it. This is not a pate and I have wasted my money. It is very hard to find something cats like and when you mess with it you make it hard on cat owners. If it is not broke don't fix it.
