Instructions

  1. Unfold and place the pad, plastic side down, in a confined area, away from your dog's bed and food.
  2. Place your dog on the pad several times so he can smell the pad and get used to it.
  3. While your dog is eliminating on the pad, use a phrase like "go potty" so that eventually you can use the command and your dog will understand what it means.
  4. Immediately after the dog eliminates on the pad, reward him with praise and a treat.
  5. If you dog has an accident, bring him back to the pad immediately. Continue bringing your dog back to the pad to reinforce that this is the place to go potty.
  6. Dispose of soiled pads and replace as needed. To complete house training, gradually move the pad closer to the door and finally outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

** How long does it take to housebreak a puppy?**

Typically, a puppy can only hold its waste for an hour for each month of age (i.e. a 3 month old puppy has to relieve itself every 3 hours). Training takes consistency and patience. Whether you are crate training, paper training, or both, puppies may not be fully housebroken until they are 8-12 months of age.

What are the main uses for Hartz training pads?

Hartz training pads can be used to protect your home from soiling, to housebreak your puppy, to provide a comfortable environment for your dog to relieve itself when you are away from home, as area for indoor dogs to relieve themselves and as a convenient place for your pet to relieve itself when he refuses to go outside.

How do I use training pads for housebreaking?

Place the pad colored plastic side down. Let the dog or puppy smell the pad and get used to it. Hartz® Maximum Protection pads have been treated with a special grass scent to attract your puppy to the pad. If your pet relieves itself somewhere else, bring it back to the pad immediately. Continue bringing your dog or puppy back to the pad and reward him with treats and praise when he uses the pad to reinforce that this is the place to soil. Once your pet has learned to relieve itself on the pad, bring the pads gradually closer to the door and finally outdoors to complete the housebreaking process.

My dog has eaten the puppy pad-what now?

A small amount in a larger puppy most likely won’t cause serious issues but a smaller puppy ingesting some could cause problems. If you note any vomiting or abnormal behavior, consult your veterinarian.

What do I do if my dog or puppy has an accident in the house?

It is important not to become angry or frustrated as this may confuse the dog or cause it to secretly soil areas when you are not around. Continue with consistent training and thoroughly clean soiled surfaces with a strong product designed to remove tough stains and odors rather than cover them up.

Tried a bunch of different pads for my litter of yellow lab puppies. These were by far the worst i bought. They were so cheap and papery there was nothing to them. The ceiling fan on my 13ft ceiling blew them away. The puppies little tiny pee spots leaked right through. If you looking for awesome pads that work great buy Frisco Extra Large Training & Potty Pads, 28" x 34" These were nice an heavy duty and worked great with my 9 puppies!

  • WORKS GOOD BUT...

Nothing against Chewy but Hartz changed the size on the Extra Large Pad it's much longer than wider than they were 6 months ago. Same size packaging of 30 pads and same smell, however they used to be a full square, now they are rectangular. My dog is finicky and makes a large puddle on one end but will not cross the seeped in puddle of the pad to get to the dry end; so Daddy has to rotate the pad to get full use of the entire pad. Otherwise they are great, unless you dog like mine might get in a hurry (9 month old Jack Russell-miniature) and just uses the edge and runs on to play then you get a puddle underneath. I fixed this issue by just adding a unfolded newspaper on top of the laminate Nothing against Chewy but Hartz changed the size on the Extra Large Pad it's much longer than wider than they were 6 months ago. But I do recommend this to anyone who has a heavy peeing dog as it does a GREAT JOB of soaking and not leaking through or going through the edges. Just wish it was a total square like it used to be. But I took that issue up with Hartz...but then again it does fit better in the nook in the bathroom for the puppy. :-) Happy Tails everyone. P Ford, Lebanon, Indiana … more

  • what's changed?

    By on

I've been using Hartz for years but something has changed. I don't know if they are old batches or new but if they are new they do not work at all. They used to capture urine and instantly turn to gel but they no longer do that. It's more of a mess to clean up than if I had not put a pad down.

  • What is the world has happened

    By on Top 100 Contributor

Bought this brand for the first time off the shelf at a store. It was the unscented kind. I was desperate and choice of brands was limited. They were awesome! Bought several bags of the scented from Chewy and these pads leak like crazy. Plus the dogs (2 Chis) are moving them and tearing them up with their toenails and sometimes they act like they don't want to walk on them. With the unscented I only put 3 down but with the scented I have resorted to putting down as many as 6 and still get leaks. I am going to go back to the unscented again next month, and if they too leak now, I am done with Hartz.

  • Not what I wanted.

I would not call these pads x-large compared to the other x-large pads here, nor were they as firm. I am putting two together to make them what I want. I would compare the measurements to get what you want.

  • Hartz piddle pads

    By on

Hartz dog piddle pads are the best and most absorbent of any pads I have bought! I use the piddle pads for my cat that can easily pee a river and the Hartz pads soak it all up.

  • These pads really do hold down the odor

    By on

This is my first time to ever need potty pads. I have a very sick new puppy that cannot always hold her potty until she gets outside and these pads have been a lifesaver. I keep a couple of pads by the patio doors and the baby can always seem to make it to a pad if she cannot make it outside. Great product.
