Instructions

  1. Unfold and place the pad, plastic side down, in a confined area, away from your dog's bed and food.
  2. Place your dog on the pad several times so he can smell the pad and get used to it.
  3. While your dog is eliminating on the pad, use a phrase like "go potty" so that eventually you can use the command and your dog will understand what it means.
  4. Immediately after the dog eliminates on the pad, reward him with praise and a treat.
  5. If you dog has an accident, bring him back to the pad immediately. Continue bringing your dog back to the pad to reinforce that this is the place to go potty.
  6. Dispose of soiled pads and replace as needed. To complete house training, gradually move the pad closer to the door and finally outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

** How long does it take to housebreak a puppy?**

Typically, a puppy can only hold its waste for an hour for each month of age (i.e. a 3 month old puppy has to relieve itself every 3 hours). Training takes consistency and patience. Whether you are crate training, paper training, or both, puppies may not be fully housebroken until they are 8-12 months of age.

What are the main uses for Hartz training pads?

Hartz training pads can be used to protect your home from soiling, to housebreak your puppy, to provide a comfortable environment for your dog to relieve itself when you are away from home, as area for indoor dogs to relieve themselves and as a convenient place for your pet to relieve itself when he refuses to go outside.

How do I use training pads for housebreaking?

Place the pad colored plastic side down. Let the dog or puppy smell the pad and get used to it. Hartz® Maximum Protection pads have been treated with a special grass scent to attract your puppy to the pad. If your pet relieves itself somewhere else, bring it back to the pad immediately. Continue bringing your dog or puppy back to the pad and reward him with treats and praise when he uses the pad to reinforce that this is the place to soil. Once your pet has learned to relieve itself on the pad, bring the pads gradually closer to the door and finally outdoors to complete the housebreaking process.

My dog has eaten the puppy pad-what now?

A small amount in a larger puppy most likely won’t cause serious issues but a smaller puppy ingesting some could cause problems. If you note any vomiting or abnormal behavior, consult your veterinarian.

What do I do if my dog or puppy has an accident in the house?

It is important not to become angry or frustrated as this may confuse the dog or cause it to secretly soil areas when you are not around. Continue with consistent training and thoroughly clean soiled surfaces with a strong product designed to remove tough stains and odors rather than cover them up.

  • A little smaller than I expected

    By on

I know a thing or two about puppy pads and when I purchased these (granted i did NOT look at the dimensions) I expected them to be larger than what I recieved. They still work because I have a small dog, however I would prefer them to be at least a couple inches bigger!

This pads work great for my Great Dane puppy that is the size of a small horse. She gets up in the middle of the night sometimes and uses the pads and never had a leak on the floor.

  • what's changed?

    By on

I've been using Hartz for years but something has changed. I don't know if they are old batches or new but if they are new they do not work at all. They used to capture urine and instantly turn to gel but they no longer do that. It's more of a mess to clean up than if I had not put a pad down.

  • Do not buy!

    By on

Tried a bunch of different pads for my litter of yellow lab puppies. These were by far the worst i bought. They were so cheap and papery there was nothing to them. The ceiling fan on my 13ft ceiling blew them away. The puppies little tiny pee spots leaked right through. If you looking for awesome pads that work great buy Frisco Extra Large Training & Potty Pads, 28" x 34" These were nice an heavy duty and worked great with my 9 puppies!

  • Absorbent but small

    By on

These pads are pretty absorbent. But they are too small for my ninety pound Sheprador. Even though they are size extra large. I wish they were half again as big

  • They are Adequate

    By on

Not as big as other XL pads. Also, they are difficult to unfold as they tend to stick together. Tried to save money, but I'm now looking for other brands.

  • Love these pads

    By on

My dog tends to urinate on the edge of the pad which usually ends up a mess with the urine underneath the pads. But not with these pads. They are super absorbent.

I had a senior cat that was having trouble getting all the way in the litter box. I put this down out side of his box to catch the misses. They worked great with a nice sent.
