FAQ

Has Health Extension been affected by any pet food recalls?

No, our formulas have never had a single recall.

What is the difference between “chicken” meal and “chicken by-product” meal?

Chicken meal is a high quality concentrated protein source that contains muscle meat. By law it may not contain heads, feet or intestines. Chicken by-product meal contains a variety of chicken “parts” including heads, feet and intestines.

Why do you use garlic in certain formulas?

We add a trace of garlic to our canned dog food to increase palatability. While it is a member of the onion family, garlic does not contain a meaningful amount of disulfide and will not cause a dog to become ill.

Where are Health Extension foods made?

All Health Extension products are proudly made in the U.S.A.

What is the shelf life of Health Extension?

Health Extension dry foods have an expiration of 1 year from date of manufacture.

    No Luck with this item

    By on

My Gracie Allen ate about 4 cans total. Then by the 5th day, she refused any flavor offered. Maybe it disagrees with her digestion. Heck who knows. It did not go to waste. Because I took all three cases to the local Animal Shelter. Oh well! I am still searching for a healthy, completely made in USA wet cat food.

    not for my cat's taste

    By on

I have a 4 month old kitten and thought this would be a very healthy option with good nutrition. However, he seems to not like the taste. He would only eat about 1/10 of a can at a time, leaving the rest of the serving in his bowl. Minutes later he would come get me asking for more food, and when I showed him what was left in his bowl, he would just walk away.

Best cat food for kcal value and price.

    By on

This wet food is the best for my cats. I love that I can give them 1 can per day (6-8 pounds) and supplement with dry if needed. Other cat foods are nearly twice the price and require 1 1/2 to 2 cans per day for a 6-8 pound cat. I think for the value there really isn't another competitor- at least not one that I've seen on Chewy, and trust me, I've looked!

    Maybe not for picky eaters.

    By on

My kittens eat this, but they aren't crazy about it. It may be the turkey flavor as they're used to getting chicken or fish. I'm very happy with the quality of the food and the price is affordable compared to other bigger names. The texture is a bit different. It's more like a loose pate. I'm not fond of that, but not a big issue. I may try the chicken flavor and see how they like it.

No fish or soy for my cat.

    By on

I have purchased this for my cat who cannot have any sort of fish or soy. He, and his brother, gobble this up. Thank you for providing a food my cat can and will eat! He has gained weight and has a soft silky coat to boot!

Great ingredients, great pate, but cats didn't touch

    By on

I picked Health Extension Turkey b/c it met all my requirements for a canned cat food without all the bad ingredients. I was hoping this brand would be part of our rotation but unfortunately, my two cats didn't even touch this. I tried three cans to no success. This was surprising b/c my cats are on a rotation of 4-5 diff. brands and took to each one without problem. I noticed the only ingredient that's different in Health Extension (from the other brands we use) is butternut squash. Maybe my cats just don't like squash!

    Very soupy

    By on Top 100 Contributor

This food is very soupy - you can actually stir it with a spoon. I got it for my elder cat because it's for kittens and she needs to put on some weight, but she didn't like lapping up a liquidy food. I tried mixing it in with a pate food she likes and that didn't work either. My other cat, who is a food-a-holic will eat it if I mix it with a pate, but even he won't eat it by itself. And he does NOT need to gain weight, so the shelter will get the unopened cans and maybe they can find some kitties who will eat it.

    Good ingredients

    By on

I bought this by the reviews hoping my cats would love it because it has all the ingredients I don't want in my cats food and all my cats like it, I have 8 cats,, even the one that hardly eats any of the wet food I buy,, I am not fond of the mushiness texture of it, its easier to get it out of the can with a spoon than a fork but other than that I will be buying this again and may try a different flavor too,, its always a risk buying a new food but a bigger one when you have to buy a whole case if they don't eat it,, I have one cat that will eat almost anything so it wouldn't have gone to waste but I am happy my cats eat this!

Excellent - approved by all 3 kitties !

    By on Top 25 Contributor

I was happy to discover this brand. According to their website, they source nothing from China. Decided to give it a whirl and all 3 kitties lapped it up. This is somewhat of a chunky pate and moist....you know how some pate is ultra smooth and dry...Not this...I am pleased about the consistency because my cats usually prefer stew types of food. This was pate with some larger pieces ......I believe this would still be very acceptable for a cat who is lacking teeth...It's not overly chunky.....I also ordered the beef flavor....Tomorrow morning that will be sampled for breakfast ! Recommend this line of food ! (Plus..you get 24 cans in a case- not just 12)

    Surprisingly well accepted!

    By on Top 100 Contributor

I have a cat with pancreatitis triggered by food allergies. Finding a food she can eat AND likes has been a challenge, to say the least. I don't know anything about Health Extension as a brand, but I can honestly say that not only does my picky pancreatitis girl like this one, so do the other cats, too! The texture is a spoonable pate - not smooth, but not overly chunky, either. Very moist with some liquid on the side (which is good - I hate the dry pate types). I have a request in to the company to find out what the phosphorus content is because my old renal failure guy likes this one, too. I'm hoping it's something we can add into his rotation because it's got enough fat to help get more I have a cat with pancreatitis triggered by food allergies. And weirdly, most of the cats actually like it! We'll be buying this one again. … more
