I am constantly researching the best foods for my lady hens. I came upon the Hen Up Organic Scratch Grains that was a good starting point. I decided to create my own scratch gains since you should limit there consumption of scratch to about 10% of their diet. We live in snow country and they need more warmth and more entertainment during the day and they like to scratch around when the weather is pleasant and if I should only give them 10% of their diet in scratch and I wanted to give them more, then I needed to make it a better scratch. I mix the Hen Up scratch with Scratch and Peck organic layer feed (this has several really nice grains in it) and since I mix the Hen up with the layer feed, then they are able to get the more of the mixture and twice a day, morning and right before they go in for the night to give them more food to create warmth. I also add black sunflower seeds and black soldier fly grubs (more protein than mealworms) and my hens just love this mix! There is something there for everyone....some really like the corn, others like the barley or sunflower seeds. It is always all gone!
With colder nights on the way I want to keep my hens warm and cozy. To help to warm them from the inside I feed these Hen Up scratch grains to them in the afternoon. As dusk approaches they go into the coop with full crops and their body temperatures stay at a healthy warmer level through the night. I highly recommend Hen Up organic scratch grains. Your hens will reward you with fresh eggs and lots of happy chicken behaviors.
My flock absolutely loves this stuff. When I’m trying to wrangle them in from free ranging, this is my go-to snack to throw out. They go nuts for it and come running when they hear the jar I store it in pop open. A little dusty as others have mentioned but not a big deal for me (all feed no matter the brand has dust). Overall would recommend and I’m sure so would my flock.
Talk about a bag packed with chickens in mind! My flock comes running when they see or hear the bag. They even jump up sometimes while I’m trying to give it to them lol. They enjoy it. I live in an urban setting so I throw this out and let them forage until their hearts are content or it’s all gone lol
As others have mentioned, the scratch grains are very dusty. It leaves a white film on everything. I also had an issue with bugs but it was stored away from the house and not a huge deal breaker. The hens seemed to like it fine but don’t love it. I’ve made them my own mix of grains and they like that much more. For the price, I was expecting a more quality product.
The first time I purchased this product I thought it was a pretty good deal. Then the second time it seemed like there was more peas and the third time purchase will be my last time. My chickens won't eat the peas not even the wild birds will eat them and I have a load of peas all over my chicken yard. I will not buy this product again.
I raised my baby chicks on this brand, it always fresh, no power. Tried out the scratch and mixed it in with my normal feed. Good stuff.
I'll never buy a Hen Up product again. These scratch grains were at least 1/3 ground up dust. My hens wouldn't touch the round peas in there so this was such a waste. Probably more beneficial if I had just dumped it directly into the compost.
Opened the bag to find mold and pantry moths flying out, also little flying black bugs.... I know it's organic haha but now the creatures are in my house... Yuck!
My girls are addicted to this stuff - so much so, that within 20 mins of being let out to forage, they will start to pester me for scratch (I give it to them when it's time to put back in the run). I know another reviewer said 1/3 of the bag was peas but that does not seem to be the case in my bags - there aren't that many peas and my girls love those too anyway.
