I was going to give up on our English Shepherd--a 2 year old rescue dog that had never had any training--because he was such a strong puller. I kept going to Chewy for another style leash/collar. Finally I decided to try the Herm-Sprenger prong collar. It works perfectly. I had experience training dogs but my dog didn't respond. He had dragged me to the pavement and had almost done the same to my husband. This collar is extremely strong and well-made. It is difficult for me to open and close because I have small hands. But a pair of pliers does the trick. This collar is only for training. Please don't leave it on your dog all the time.
It is difficult to get on and off but it does work. My dog would start pulling every time he saw another dog approaching and trying to hold him back with a flat collar only increased his intensity (100 pounds of muscle). With the Herm Sprenger collar a quick snap and he is at my side making it easier to get his attention away from the approaching dog.
This is a great tool to manage my strong-pulling-doodle. He walks beside me and responds to periodic flicks of the collar to remind him where I want him to be. I watched some great videos on YouTube for guidance. Love the Herm Sprenger collar, its effectiveness and its humaneness to my dog.
We recently took in a foster dog who was a stray before coming to us and never had a collar around her neck before. This collar was a game changer in training and walking her. She stopped pulling and we can easily communicate our expectations to her. It's high quality which gives us peace of mind knowing it helps keep her secure and won't break.
This collar should come with an emergency release button per my dog trainer so that no accidents can hurt your pet. The instructions say that it can be released and I finally did get it to open but now it won't re-attach. I won't be using it on my dog. .
It is not perfect, but our sweet but prey-driven hound has not pulled me over since we began using this prong collar. She pulls only a fraction of her previous force and there is no coughing or gagging. She has a 15 inch neck so we went up to the 16-18 and took links out. The smaller size might look better. I did not give it 5 because I think that it should have a quick release for safety and for ease of donning. Opening the links are almost impossible for me.
I have had one of these collars for about 15 years for use on our Dobermans. Charlie, our current dobe, at 101 pounds, likes to pull and is very stubborn. This collar works to slow him down so he is walkable. Some links are bent a little, but it still works great. I use it attached to a regular fabric collar just in case the pinch comes apart. Very happy customer.
I have a husky who I inadvertently taught to pull me like a sleigh using a harness. I then upgraded to a slip leash, thinking that my intelligent dog would choose air over pulling- I was wrong. At my wits end, I elected to stop walking him to save my appendages from harm- he is just too strong. Enter the Herm prong collar. The very first walk with it, he knew he was got. His thick coat protects his skin from the metal, but he feels just enough to know that the dynamic has changed. The prongs do not suffocate him when they do their job- much unlike the slip leash. When I stop, he stops. Couple with a two handled leash and you are back in control. I now have one for each of my 3 dogs and we have eradicated our pulling problem. Anyone who calls these collars abusive either purchase cheap alternatives that arent built well, or are living in plain ignorance. Buy it if you have a pulling problem.
I recently purchased this for my 11month old Lab Although she is a very small Lab she is solid muscle! No one including myself is able to walk her! Over the years I have purchased several of these necklaces and all my labs walked great with this product You just need to make sure you get the correct size becsuse the teeth and the length are very important if the teeth are the largest size it won't work correctly and if the size around the neck is just a little bit larger it can really injure your pet by them putting their foot through the opening and can chock them also you don't want to leave it on them unattended as you would with a normal collar dogs are very creative and they can try to get it off and chock, injure or really hurt themselves trying to get it off!! Mine did and tried to run away so when I caught him his front paw was sticking out and he was chocking himself so don't leave it on them w/o supervision but all and all its a great product if you only use it to walk them!
This is truly the only prong collar I recommend to anyone who is training. This collar is to put pressure on the dog rather than any pain. The prongs are dull which I love, and easy to remove/put on
