Instructions
  1. Before installation, soak the sponge block in aquarium water for at least five (5) minutes.
  2. To clean sponge block, always rinse with water taken from your aquarium. Do not use tap or hot faucet water as this can damage the sponge block and impact bacteriological action.
  3. When re-installing the sponge block, submerge in aquarium water and squeeze gently to remove all trapped air inside the microscopic pores. This allows the sponge block to operate properly.
  4. For optimum performance, replace the sponge block every six (6) months. Allow the new block to soak in your aquarium water for a minimum of two weeks before installation to allow it to colonize with nitrifying bacteria.
  5. The Bacto-Surge® Sponge Filter requires a minimum of 30 days of use to operate peak performance. Care should be taken during this time to monitor your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels as the aquarium progresses through the nitrogen cycle. ClorAm-X® can help control ammonia toxicity during this period.

    Great for Betta fish

    By on

I use a sponge filter for my Betta fish who is in a 5 gallon and so far no complaints! There are always pros and cons with different filters, and I will say I have to clean his tank more thoroughly than the others, but I love that it causes low current and my parameters are usually pretty consistent so I'd say it's doing a good job.

    A good sponge

    By on

I ordered the wrong size for the tank but that's on me. I'm still using it though, and it performs well. Safe for my shrimp and livebearer spawn. I let it soak in one of my tanks overnight before placing it. I'm a fan and would buy again for my other aquariums.

    Nice quality

    By on

Big, good for air pump powered tank filter. Grows good bacteria and some light mechanical filtration. Clogs easily tho if using a powerhead and dirty tank. It's not really designed for that use, too fine. I have several others on air only that work great

    sank right away

so sick and tired of hang on back filters breaking on me. This sponge filter is nice and quiet, obviously no mechanical bits and bobs to break on you. Finally my tank is sounding great and looking crystal clear

    No Weighted Base

    By on

What a waste of money. I bought this for a hospital tank, but it did not come with a weighted base. I needed it immediately, so decided to give it a try by weighing it down with rocks. No go. The slightest movement from someone walking by, and this thing pops up. Super stressful for sick fish to listen to falling rocks and have the water flow change so suddenly. So frustrating!

    Mini Sponge Filter

    By on

Great lil filter for my crab tank. Easy to assemble. It's already pretty quite. I suggest you do not add an air/bubble stone. It made the bubbling way louder. It is perfect the way it is. Great buy!!

Not as large as I expected based on other reviews

    By on

As I said not as large as I expected from other reviews but I got two so should do the job. I am using them in a 100 gallon outdoor goldfish tub. The weighted bottom is not really good enough to hold it down I had to tie it to rocks at the bottom which makes cleaning it an issue but will work something out down the road to keep it at the bottom. Will also work on getting a small airstone into it as it produces too large a bubble for my size tub and two together is a boiling pot! I have air flow regulators on them so was able to dial them back which reduced the bubble size alot. Bought 2 so I could alternate the cleaning each week with my goldfish I expect a lot of mess.
