FAQ

Why should I buy Veterinary Diets online?

Shopping for Veterinary Diets is easy! Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer your questions and guide you through the process. We offer competitive prices, free shipping on orders over $49, and more savings if you sign up for an Autoship subscription.

How do I order Veterinary Diets?

  1. Search our website for the diet your vet recommends, then add it to your cart. You can purchase your Veterinary Diets with any other goodies you need!
  2. At checkout, you’ll be asked for required information. Enter your pet’s name and your vet’s name & telephone number.
  3. Place your order, and we’ll take care of the rest!

How will you contact my vet?

Our Veterinary Diets team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my veterinarian’s authorization?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your vet’s authorization, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax it to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a veterinarian’s authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian’s authorization?

Veterinary Diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper authorization, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with the full name of the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Create your pet’s profile on Chewy.com.
  2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on your Veterinary Diets, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any authorization information has changed.
  3. If you have an authorization handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your authorization will expire and how many times we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills?

Yep! Sign up for Autoship and we’ll automatically ship your Veterinary Diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills, or your authorization expires, we’ll automatically contact your vet for a new authorization. If we hit any bumps in the road, we’ll let you know right away.

My cat eats it, and she is a fussy eater. Comes in smaller size cans, so order more if you are used to 5.5 ounce cans.

    Inconsistent

    By on

I have been ordering metabolic urinary for years now because our vet recommended it for both my cats. It is very expensive cat food, but at least before it was consistent- when you open the jar it had chunks of meat and some gravy and it was light in color. Now, when you open the jar you see grayish slimy substance, it does not look appealing at all. I cannot say that my cats like it either, but both have very sensitive stomach and we did not find a real alternative to this food yet.

    Works for cat.

My cat has urinary issues and is slightly overweight. He has no crystals on this and has been losing weight (I’ve also been lowering his portions). I chose this over other brands because it has better ingredients.

    Great Product

Bear craves wet food and he was always trying to dip into the food the other cats eat. We tried a different brand of urinary food and he wouldn't eat it. He loves this food.

Works IF Everyone Does Their Part

    By on

I have 3 rescues, 2 with urinary issues and slightly overweight. I did listen to my vet when he said my boys needed to lose weight and I knew I was in for some complaining. First, NO more free feeding...AT ALL. I got the Catit feeders that required digging kibble one or two at a time and they all looked at me as if to say...Really Mom? REALLY? Curbing the speed of kibble intake was the first step. Measured Metabolic Urinary wet food morning and evening. Over 4 months my fatest boy was down to desired weight and fat boy almost. They love to eat so are thrilled at feeding time for their portions. Urinary kibble is now used in the Catit as treats and they arent the wiser...its food. I Have to Be Honest

    By on

The 2 stars are solely because you never know what the next batch will be like. Now - I know - all companies change their pet food ingredients frequently. But for what we pay for this - it would be nice to keep it the same. Sometimes she likes it ok ... other times - nope! I often throw 1/2 of it away. Is that how she loses weight? :( The tuna SEEMS more consistent.

    He loves it.

My big male cat loves this food. He weighs 26lbs and really needs to lose some weight. I've only had him on this diet for about 3 weeks so I can't tell if he has lost any weight yet. Just wish it wasn't so expensive.
