Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

How do I order veterinary diets?

- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

Food is Good - But Chewy Service Isn't
By CatMan on Sep 8, 2020
This food costs more than steak! And given the HUGE profit margin you would think that Chewy would keep it in stock. But no... My "auto ship" isn't really automatic when it is now scheduled to arrive a week after I run out!!! Another company with FAKE customer service. When it really counts, you will need to look somewhere else for service...

I can not find this food!
By candace12 on Sep 18, 2020
It is out of stock everywhere! Emailing and trying to contact the company is even a worse pain. They can not give me any answers. They are so unhelpful, never going back. Their excuse “sorry for the inconvenience, we do not know when it will be back on the shelf.” It’s been TWO MONTHS, I have not been able to find it, way to go. We pay a good penny for this, unacceptable.

Cat food recommended by VET
By CatFood on Jul 29, 2020
I found it difficult to find the appropriate item on the website. My Vet had given me a product number and I could not find product numbers and I ended up with the wrong product. The cat still ate it. It just was not the actual product I needed.

My cat eats it, and she is a fussy eater. Comes in smaller size cans, so order more if you are used to 5.5 ounce cans.

Excellent Product
By Janet on Mar 26, 2020
My cat loves to eat and has to be on a urinary diet . This food is wonderful. It fills him up, he lives it and perfect for his dietary restrictions.

Inconsistent
By Polieta on Dec 22, 2019
I have been ordering metabolic urinary for years now because our vet recommended it for both my cats. It is very expensive cat food, but at least before it was consistent- when you open the jar it had chunks of meat and some gravy and it was light in color. Now, when you open the jar you see grayish slimy substance, it does not look appealing at all. I cannot say that my cats like it either, but both have very sensitive stomach and we did not find a real alternative to this food yet.

Works for cat.
By Ashley on Jan 5, 2020
My cat has urinary issues and is slightly overweight. He has no crystals on this and has been losing weight (I’ve also been lowering his portions). I chose this over other brands because it has better ingredients.

Great Product
By DBRB on Jan 19, 2020
Bear craves wet food and he was always trying to dip into the food the other cats eat. We tried a different brand of urinary food and he wouldn't eat it. He loves this food.

Works IF Everyone Does Their Part
By Fatcats34me on Sep 10, 2019
I have 3 rescues, 2 with urinary issues and slightly overweight. I did listen to my vet when he said my boys needed to lose weight and I knew I was in for some complaining. First, NO more free feeding...AT ALL. I got the Catit feeders that required digging kibble one or two at a time and they all looked at me as if to say...Really Mom? REALLY? Curbing the speed of kibble intake was the first step. Measured Metabolic Urinary wet food morning and evening. Over 4 months my fatest boy was down to desired weight and fat boy almost. They love to eat so are thrilled at feeding time for their portions. Urinary kibble is now used in the Catit as treats and they arent the wiser...its food. The box bottoms the cans come in make WONDERFUL food trays for the cat dishes. No more wet food on the floor. EVERYONE is happy. Especially my vet because I actually listened... … more
