How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

HILLS SCIENCE DERM DEFENSE
By Colbey on Feb 15, 2021
We are trying a new food for our dog b/c of licking his paws. We have tried many Rxs and nothing seems to help. It is too early to tell if this food will make a difference so I gave the item a 3-star rating. Thank you for being so kind and generous during this time of trial and error. Blessings!

Excellent for environmental allergies
By Foritchydogseverywhere on Jul 15, 2020
My white American Bulldog developed allergies when we moved to a new city. She began scratching and chewing herself raw. Working at a veterinary hospital we started her on [expensive] allergy meds, but after a few months they stopped helping, so we sought out the help of a veterinary dermatologist who performed some skin tests and determined she is allergic to a dozen things in the environment from fleas to pollen and certain trees. This is the only food that keeps her from scratching and chewing her skin raw since it is made specifically for dogs with environmental allergies. This is not meant for dogs with allergies related to food, so chances are, if this food isn't helping your dog, their My white American Bulldog developed allergies when we moved to a new city. Helps with dogs that have sensitive skin
By Jole on May 7, 2020
My vet prescribed this for my light colored pit bull that has sensitive skin. It really has helped. Between this food and a medicated bath I give him once a week, he is much better. I have used Chewy for years but I had only recently switched him to this food and bought it through my vets office. I had been waiting almost a month for the other place and it never shipped, they had said 7-10 days longer per order, but a month had lapsed. So I sign into my Chewy account and food was delivered in 5 days. I was thrilled with this time because the prescription had to be verified through my dog’s veterinarian. Now I have it on auto ship with Chewy.

On the Fence
By TracyHW on May 17, 2020
Our vet recommended this dog food for our terriers with allergies. We were buying Merrick (also vet recommended) before we switched. The issues we have with it so far: (1) the taste isn't causing them to beat a path to the bowl, (2) it's terribly hard to chew so they're eating less as a result, and (3) it's very expensive. We get that it's prescription dog food, but yikes. It's too early to tell whether their allergy issues are resolved, but fingers crossed!

Tastes good and is good for the skin
By smh1011 on May 1, 2020
I started this prescription food in trying to figure out a hair loss problem with my pit bull Leia. She loves the taste (even more than the hypoallergenic food that she had been eating), and her coat is soft and silky. The bald spots haven't cleared up completely, but that may take much longer than the 2 weeks that she has been on the food. One caveat: this food must be saltier than her hypoallergenic diet ... she always tanks up on water after eating.

Hill's Science Diet Derm Defense for Dogs
By Susieque on Jun 30, 2020
Dog loves the taste. Helps with skin redness, irritation and allergies in dogs. Higher in Omega 3's and 6's to counteract the inflammatory response in dogs with allergies.

Not effective
By Gary on Jan 29, 2020
This didn't work for my dog probably because it is pretty much identical to many dog foods you can buy without a prescription and for much less. Independent testing has show that prescription dog foods contain about the same amount of impurities as regular ones.
