FAQ

Why should I buy Veterinary Diets online?

Shopping for Veterinary Diets is easy! Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer your questions and guide you through the process. We offer competitive prices, free shipping on orders over $49, and more savings if you sign up for an Autoship subscription.

How do I order Veterinary Diets?

  1. Search our website for the diet your vet recommends, then add it to your cart. You can purchase your Veterinary Diets with any other goodies you need!
  2. At checkout, you’ll be asked for required information. Enter your pet’s name and your vet’s name & telephone number.
  3. Place your order, and we’ll take care of the rest!

How will you contact my vet?

Our Veterinary Diets team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my veterinarian’s authorization?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your vet’s authorization, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax it to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a veterinarian’s authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian’s authorization?

Veterinary Diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper authorization, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with the full name of the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Create your pet’s profile on Chewy.com.
  2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on your Veterinary Diets, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any authorization information has changed.
  3. If you have an authorization handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your authorization will expire and how many times we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills?

Yep! Sign up for Autoship and we’ll automatically ship your Veterinary Diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills, or your authorization expires, we’ll automatically contact your vet for a new authorization. If we hit any bumps in the road, we’ll let you know right away.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the Veterinary Diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We’re here for you 24/7.

About Hill's Prescription Diet Derm Defense Environmental Sensitivities for Dogs

Groundbreaking Nutrition for Aging Pets

Groundbreaking Nutrition for Healthy Skin

Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians developed Derm Defense to help manage environmental sensitivities in dogs. This unique, prescription food is Hill's first and only nutrition with HistaGuard™ Complex—formulated to reduce signs of environmental allergies disrupting the internal allergy response and creating a barrier against future episodes.

Clinical Nutrition

With Hill's, it's not just high-quality ingredients that count. Their focus is on the proper balance of nutrients in every recipe. So, Hill's designed food to help pets with health conditions, providing the right nutrients to support their health. Hill's alliance with veterinarians puts them in a position to find a nutrition recommendation for your pet, no matter what health issue your pet is facing.

Formulated by Veterinarians

Hill's Prescription Diet started with a veterinarian's belief that some health issues could be managed through nutrition. What began as a theory has now been proven through extensive research by a team of over 220 vets, PhD nutritionists and food scientists. The results can be seen in Hill's Prescription Diet therapeutic pet foods.

Meeting the Highest Standards

Providing a food that delivers exactly what it says it does is Hill's number one priority. In fact, they perform over five million safety and quality checks every year. They've established relationships with trusted suppliers and will only accept ingredients that meet stringent standards.

The Taste Factor

The Taste Factor

You might know that Hill's Prescription Diet is good for your pet, but she's only concerned with the taste. Hill's Prescription Diet Derm Defense for Dogs

    By on

Excellent for a dog who suffers from skin redness, irritation and allergies. It is higher in Omega 3's and Omega 6's to counteract the inflammatory response of allergies in a dog. Must be good tasting since the dog loves it.

    My picky dog LOVES this

    By on

WIN!!! My dog is allergic to everything and I've tried other "allergy" foods and my dog wouldn't eat it. This one she loves.

Finally! My dog loves a prescription dog food.

    By on

My Maltese has recently had allergies creep into her life. Unknown what's causing the rashes and itching, but it's gotten very bad. Switched to a new Vet and she recommended this food and some other changes. My dog would not eat other prescription food, but she loves this Hill's Derm Defense. It's been 2 weeks and with the antibiotics and other changes my dog is doing so much better. The food is expensive, but it's my dog and she's part of the family. Take the good with the bad. I was very surprised that Chewy took back the other prescription food that my dog wouldn't eat and a full refund was provided. Now that's customer service.

    Disaster for Meals

    By on

My 'little girl' was prescribed Hill's Prescription ID and readily accepted it for her meals. She's since been taken off that and prescribed Derm Defense, which she refuses to eat at all!! I'm beside myself with frustration. Is there any other 'form' of this dog food available?

    Not liking New formula

    By on

Apparently Hill's recently changed their formula. The food used to have a nice thick gravy. The gravy is now like water. Our dog still likes the food but the thin gravy makes it very difficult for our dog to eat without making a huge mess. I wish they would have just left it alone !!
