FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Formulated by Veterinarians

Hill's Prescription Diet started with a veterinarian's belief that some health issues could be managed through nutrition. What began as a theory has now been proven through extensive research by a team of over 220 vets, PhD nutritionists and food scientists. The results can be seen in Hill's Prescription Diet therapeutic pet foods.

Meeting the Highest Standards

Providing a food that delivers exactly what it says it does is Hill's number one priority. In fact, they perform over five million safety and quality checks every year. They've established relationships with trusted suppliers and will only accept ingredients that meet stringent standards.

The Taste Factor

The Taste Factor

    Big Kibble

By ElitaBonita on Sep 27, 2021

When I opened the bag I noticed that the kibble is much bigger and harder than previous times. It was small and flat before, now it is very large and a circle. The Chewy website and Hills website show the original small kibble. I noticed other people complain too. My chihuahua cannot eat it, even if I crush it. Don't know what happened?

    Eventually gets eaten

By Kcdreams on Sep 6, 2021

My vet warned me this isn’t the most appetizing for our dogs and she was right. But I can get my boy to eat it, although usually I have to mix it with something which rather decrease the effectiveness and purpose of the food.

Sarge loves his new food, made us so happy since he is a fussy foodie.

By Sarge on Jul 16, 2021

Sarge has always enjoyed his Science Diet Perfect Weight formula until two weeks ago, when diagnosed with elevated liver enzymes. In discussion with our Vet, Aging Care was recommended. Our fussy boy was transitioned to his new food and loves it! What is even better is that there are awesome treats for him to enjoy while meeting his new dietary requirements. Thank you Chewy for carrying these specialty foods at prices we dog parents love. The Rimmers

    Great chicken flavor

    By Ginger77 on Oct 7, 2021

My vet suggested this dog food, my two little dogs love it. The pieces of food are shaped like a disc and easy to chew.

    Bleh, bleh

By Annie on May 5, 2021

Not sure how good this food is, as my dog refuses to eat it. He is a Hills dog, and can be finicky, but for the price spent on this, it would be nice if he would actually eat it. Further compounded by the fact that you can't get the canned version of this anywhere (out of stock) to try mix it in and entice him. $80 down the drain so far.

By Anna on May 21, 2021

This food have big kibbles, probably best for big dogs, but not for my 7 pound dog; I have to soak it in liquid to be able to feed my Chihuahua.

Yuck! Don’t feed this to me!

By Lizzie on May 20, 2021

My older dog, a beagle, will eat just about anything. But she won’t touch this. She’d rather go hungry.

    Somewhat disappointed

By Sassy on Jan 20, 2021

Our vet prescribed g/d canned food, but none is available anywhere. So we took a chance on the dry food to tide us over. The ad when looking at the bag of food, showed a small dog. Our Sassy is 15lbs. BUT, she has few teeth. So when the kibble arrived and was pretty big, I was disappointed. She seems to like it, but I have to crush it up and then she can't eat the crumbs. I have wet the food, but she doesn't like that (she is somewhat picky).

Great find for my 14 yr old 9 lbs shitzu

By Melissa on Jan 10, 2021

I received it today in the mail. I opened this dog food late at night my dog immediately eat it once I placed it in his bowl. He did not do this with other dog foods I bought him in the past. I guess it is worth the money if he likes it. I plan on sticking with this brand since it is low in sodium, and other things that could make him sick at his age of 14 yrs old. He is only 9 lbs, so this 8.5 lbs bag should last a few months. If I had a bigger dog I would of picked something else due to it being pricey, but worth it for me and my dog.
