As dogs age, they may require food designed to help reduce nutrient excesses that could be harmful to their system. For example, high levels of sodium, phosphorus and protein can cause increased workload in the kidneys and heart. Kidneys are very important to the health of your dogs because they remove waste substances from the blood and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. Once kidney damage occurs, the consequences are usually irreversible. The heart is the most important organ in your pet's body, and factors such as age or weight may affect its function. Poor heart health can affect your dog's lifestyle and mood. Because the food your dog eats plays an important role in his or her overall health and well-being, at Hill's, nutritionists and veterinarians developed clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your older dog's kidneys and heart for overall health. Plus, with the S+OXSHIELD seal of confidence, the Aging Care formula meets specific nutrient standards shown to promote a urinary environment that helps reduce the risk of struvite and calcium oxalate crystals.
Key Benefits- Clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your older dog's kidneys and heart for overall health.
- Reduced phosphorus helps minimize stress on aging kidneys and reduced sodium helps maintain normal blood pressure.
- Reduced protein and targeted levels of high-quality protein help decrease kidney workload.
- Optimal fat levels to reduce pancreatic workload, plus increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids and controlled calories support kidney health.
- Aging Care recipe has not changed—it offers the same great taste and benefits as it did prior to the introduction of the S+OXSHIELD seal of confidence.

- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

The results can be seen in Hill's Prescription Diet therapeutic pet foods.

Somewhat disappointed
By Sassy on Jan 20, 2021
Our vet prescribed g/d canned food, but none is available anywhere. So we took a chance on the dry food to tide us over. The ad when looking at the bag of food, showed a small dog. Our Sassy is 15lbs. BUT, she has few teeth. So when the kibble arrived and was pretty big, I was disappointed. She seems to like it, but I have to crush it up and then she can't eat the crumbs. I have wet the food, but she doesn't like that (she is somewhat picky).

Great find for my 14 yr old 9 lbs shitzu
By Melissa on Jan 9, 2021
I received it today in the mail. I opened this dog food late at night my dog immediately eat it once I placed it in his bowl. He did not do this with other dog foods I bought him in the past. I guess it is worth the money if he likes it. I plan on sticking with this brand since it is low in sodium, and other things that could make him sick at his age of 14 yrs old. He is only 9 lbs, so this 8.5 lbs bag should last a few months. If I had a bigger dog I would of picked something else due to it being pricey, but worth it for me and my dog.

Food my dog can eat
By Olly on Jan 22, 2021
My dog has kidney disease and was gaining too much weight on the renal diet. This formula also limits protein and has fewer calories so his specialist recommended us switching over to it. Oliver likes it and I think he's lost a little weight so hopefully will keep him stable for a while!

Bang for your buck?
By Deej on Nov 29, 2020
So expensive for this little bag not worth it and I don’t see a difference how ever my dog loves the taste and texture! Not sure if I will keep buying this one or not and not sure if they make bigger bags and at what cost? I am not happy but my dog looks like he’s gaining weight not loosing , I spend a ton of money on chewy and I am sure there has got to be something better, need to talk to my vet I think and see .my dog weighs 71 pounds but in February when he goes to the vet will talk to her about it and find out if there’s a different option... I don’t know also if I could even buy a big bag or not I a on a fixed income so we shall see I didn’t research this as well as I should and I could So expensive for this little bag not worth it and I don’t see a difference how ever my dog loves the taste and texture! We shall see over the long run over time I know I can’t expect instant results but it’s been over a month you think I would see something by now I live in Minnesota and have four seasons we were walking twice a day morning and night however it’s cold and so mornings are cold nights are cold leaves me to once a day except three weeks ago I was in a bad accident and I am laid up so I have to pay someone to walk him it’s crazy but hopefully after physical therapy and stuff I will get into the swing of things again by that time it will be winter and even colder so if your dog can get proper exercise water and the right food and vet care they will get and be healthy!!! I really don’t think this is a bang for my buck but we shall see only time will tell time will tell, trying it maybe the results your looking for stay safe with your animals and keep yourself healthy so you can be there for your pet or pets … more

New prescription food for our Beagle
By Beaglemom on Jun 11, 2020
Prescribed for our 10 year old beagle with early stage kidney disease. She seems to like the flavor and now used to the larger kibble as she previously enjoyed “small bites” formula. We add plain nonfat Greek yogurt in the morning and canned pumpkin in the evening to keep her stomach less reactive. So far so good.

Sorry, My dog will not touch it!
By BillH on Jan 18, 2020
My vet had me switch our little baby to this because her kidney function was not the best. She had been on Purina EN because of frequent bouts of pancreatitis. Unfortunately, she left it in the bowl for 3 days, and the vet said to put her back on Purina. AFTER I had given a new bag of the Purina to a local shelter. My bad!

Hill's Prescription Diet g/d
By Margie on Nov 28, 2019
My veterinarian recommended this food for my 18 lb. cavalier because of heart and kidney disease as well as a bout with pancreatitis. It is helping but he doesn't like it at all and I have a difficult time getting him to eat it. He will only eat it if I add something to it to make it more palatable. The kibble is too big and hard and I have to crush it. I wish there was a better alternative.

Hills Sc. Dog Food
By Chigger on Dec 28, 2019
BO is a picky eater. Was so happy that he liked the food. He was put on this cause he just had a pacemaker surgery. He has too much protein in his urine. He is doing good after surgery.
