Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Chewy makes everything easy!
My poor Scout was recently diagnosed with heart failure- the vet put him on some meds and recommended Hills Heart Care. I was pretty upset that day, and as soon as I got home, I ordered the new food, and Chewy took care of the rest. They verified the prescription with my vet, made the necessary changes to my Autoship, and mailed it out the next day. Scout is feeling much better now. I thought it would be hard to switch to a different brand, but he loves it.

CHF Senior Dog Food
My senior dog with congestive heart failure is on this low sodium food. She is a 12 YO aussie, about 45 lbs. There was a formula change last year (2022), and the newer formula is a smaller kibble and I think it is easier for my older dog to eat. We also tried the Purina Pro Plan CC CardioCare, but she was not interested in the CC food at all; I think that is just due to what each individual dog prefers. She has become more of a picky eater as she has aged, and some days her appetite is not great at all, so I was happy to find a low sodium food for her that she is actually eager to eat. Delivery from Chewy has always been timely, even with the vet approval process.

My dogs love the taste of Hill's Heart Care food!
My senior dogs have heart conditions and my veterinarian recommended/prescribed Hill's Heart Care h/d dry food for them. My dogs love the taste, and they gobble the food down quickly. (One of my dogs recently lost several teeth, and to make it easier for him to eat, I placed the dry dog food in the blender to grind the small pieces into even smaller pieces.) My dogs are doing well on this 'health' food!

Hills prescription diet for dogs
This company makes great food and there are all different kinds whatever needs your dog may have I trust them and so far this will be the third time I am using a prescription food from hills. This particular one I am buying, Heart Care, is extremely difficult to find, so glad chewy carries it

My little Chi loves it!
My chihuahua was just diagnosed with some heart issues. While I was concerned after reading some of these reviews, we received the “new look” bag so I’m not sure if the kibble is smaller than in the old formula but she weighs in at just over 6 pounds and doesn’t have the best teeth, but has no issues with the size of this kibble. She loves it too! I’m so thankful we found this food for my girl’s heart issues. The only “con” was how oily the inside of the bag was. It was excessively oily and that grossed me out quite a bit. But maybe that’s why she likes this food so much? Also I do wish it came in a smaller bag but that’s not a deal breaker for us.

love new formula
The original food was so big and hard and honestly, my dogs didn’t really like it. The last order that arrived was the new formula. Smaller kibbles, they act as if it tastes better…such happier dogs.

Good but had GI issues
The kibble was big, but my small dog is a champ and didn't have a problem. She seemed to enjoy the food itself. She'd eat rocks if I let her though. I did notice that her poops were either dry or she would have diarrhea after starting this diet, even with the transition. She's known for having perfect poops regularly, so I'm confident the irregular poops are correlated with the new food. We will be switching to another food and hoping it helps. I have noticed that her medication and a prescription diet have helped her regulate her breathing, and her heart doesn't seem to be working as hard.

Smaller dogs, smaller kibble, smaller bags
In most of the reviews I find the issue to be the kibble is too big. PLUS, a 17 pound bag - How long will it take my chihuahua to finish a 17 pound bag? After busting up the kibble?
Do you think Hills pays attention to these reviews? I do hope so!
