How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Not a Good Choice
By Terz on Mar 26, 2021
My pup refused to eat this kibble. Was not fond of the Prescription Diet KD at all. Wouldn't eat the kibble or the canned beef and chicken stew. And she has always eaten everything. Now looking for a rescue that can benefit from my mistake purchase. Thank goodness I found something else, kidney diet, that she loves.

Might be prescription, but Buddie loves it!
By SOrtiz on Feb 5, 2021
When our 15 year old cocker/bichon was diagnosed with kidney failure and the vet changed his diet, we thought we were going to have some issues, but he really seemed to enjoy the regular k/d food. We thought it might have been a fluke (but were grateful) since the only way he would have his old kibble was with pieces of ham or some sort of treat to entice him. When we found the +Mobility option, we decided to give it a try with the added benefits of the food. We just received it yesterday morning and doesn't seem to be a fluke - he absolutely loved it! Barely let me put the bowl down before digging in. Too early to tell if it does actually improve what it says it helps to improve, so I will update When our 15 year old cocker/bichon was diagnosed with kidney failure and the vet changed his diet, we thought we were going to have some issues, but he really seemed to enjoy the regular k/d food. Dog refuses it
By Anne on Feb 25, 2021
The idea of this food is great with the added mobility benefits. My 15 year old dog was initially eating this as I began transitioning her food and it only accounted for about 1/4 of the food she was getting. As I increased the amount of this food, she would refuse her meals. I even tried adding a little shredded chicken or canned food. If offered a bowl with only her previous food, she ate. Our vet did caution us that dogs tend not to like the kidney diet food, so luckily I just started out with the smaller size bag to try.

Dog begs at bowl until next feeding
By Patticakes on Feb 2, 2021
Our dog loves this renal, diet food. It’s gone in less than a minute. Soon she’s laying beside her bowl waiting for more! It’s small pieces so easy for an older dog, who has tooth problems, to chew or swallow without issues. We are hooked!

My dog will NOT eat this
By SueJ on Jan 3, 2021
My dog is on a prescription diet for kidney disease. He has been on Royal Canin for a couple of years but all of a sudden I could not get this prescription from Royal Canin. My vet substituted Hill's Kidney Care but my dog will not eat it. I'm just hoping I can get Royal Canin again soon before my dog starves himself!

Little tiny kibble
By Atticus on Dec 28, 2020
This was prescribed for my 14 year old Springer Spaniel. The kibble is much much smaller than what he is use to so it has been slow going switching him over from his previous kibble. After several weeks I'm still having to add some of his prior kibble to get him to eat.

Effective but stinky
By Pittie on Nov 26, 2020
My 9 year old pit eats this up (to be fair he’ll eat just about anything he can get to) and we’ve seen clear improvement in his skin and mobility (he can jump now!). He needs the diet for his kidneys, but it’s nice to have the option of including the joint and skin care for an older dog. Downsides: price and smell—not the food itself, but my dog now has fishy smelling sweat and breath :(

Great Service!
By Indy on Dec 4, 2020
We had been getting our elderly girl's special food from our vet. We moved cross country and had to find a new supplier. Chewy was very easy to do business with and the order came in a timely fashion in perfect condition

Was feeding her Royal Canin Renal Support but KD brand also includes mobility support so very happy with that!
