Feeding Instructions

Adjust feeding amounts as necessary to maintain optimal weight. If you are unsure, ask your veterinarian. For best results & safety practices: Gradually transition to your pets new food over a 7 day period. Exclusively feed the recommended Prescription Diet dry food, wet food and treats. Keep fresh water available at all times. Have your veterinarian monitor your pets condition.

Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Great assortment for a picky older cat

By Paula on Dec 1, 2020

Marissa is okay with eating her kidney support food but she sometimes decides in the middle of a case that she's tired of one type, which is a problem as the food is expensive. I thought I would get this assortment and see which was her favorite. The case contains six cans of food in three different flavors (tuna stew, chicken stew, and chicken pate), and two small bags of kibble, so if your cat doesn't like one you can just try another. It's convenient and a great way to see what your cat prefers without waste and expense. I found that Rissa loves the pate and kibble, which I hadn't been buying, so will be adding those in future.

Perfect for cats starting on k/d

    By KM27 on Nov 15, 2020

We're all aware that cats are notorious for being picky eaters, especially when it comes to prescription diets. This variety pack is great for figuring out which flavors your cat will eat without having to buy a whole case only to have your cat turn his nose up at the first can. My cat typically prefers pate, but he loves the k/d stews in both flavors. He likes (but not loves) the tuna pate, but was completely uninterested in the chicken version. He doesn't really eat dry food anymore after having a tooth extracted, so getting two bags of the same flavor wasn't a problem for me. But it would be nice since they make a point to include two bags, to include one of each flavor. Great way to try different food without spending a fortune.

By Maya on Nov 12, 2020

My cat has kidney disease and is suppose to have wet food. Before the disease she would eat wet food, the wetter the better; and occasionally eat the dry food that was always available. Since she only weighted 7 pounds, I didn't have to worry about her overeating. Now she has a new prescription diet, she doesn't want the wet food, she wants the dry! Cats! Occasionally she will eat the wet but only with added broth or nutritional yeast or some of the dry food sprinkled over the top. Even then, she doesn't eat much. She now weighs only 6 pounds 3 ounces. The thing I can say is she likes this food better than the prescription food I first tried with her. Excellent value

By RobJ on Nov 8, 2020

Stressing to find your fur baby needs special diet for loss of kidney function. I noticed she wasn’t eating and her coat looked matted. Our vet said she may not be grooming due to not feeling well with her kidney function. I decided to search on Chewy for foods on their k/d line. This sample pack popped up and for the value I felt the price was worth trying. It was fabulous. Two sample packs of the dry kibble which she was already using. The sizes and different flavors of the wet canned food were great. She loved them all. She immediately started eating again and it seemed to stimulate her eating behavior. Within a week her coat had improved, she was more playful. I definitely felt Stressing to find your fur baby needs special diet for loss of kidney function. Surprisingly, they like it.

By lbcos on Dec 11, 2020 Top 250 Contributor

I recently had two cats diagnosed with kidney failure. I bought the sampler pack, and the KD Chicken and Vegetable Stew seemed to be the best liked. Both of them will eat it if they don't get it for every meal, so something is better than nothing. The pieces are not large, and that is usually a deal breaker.

    Nice for previewing kitty's food

By KiKi on Jan 1, 2021

Given how picky cats are about their food and how expensive it is to buy an entire bag of a single food item only to have your cat reject it, this variety pack of small bags and cans of cat food is a great idea.

    Great idea!

By LilliesMom on Nov 3, 2020

I loved that this pack had a variety of tastes for my sick little girl. I had tried another brand that she absolutely would not eat even if I doctored it up. So finding a variety pack to test things out was great! She ate every variety like it was her new favorite so I ordered a case of each of the flavors. Now suddenly, she won't eat the tuna stew . It's almost like it's not the same food. Thankfully she devours the chicken stew. I don't understand why the abrupt change on the one flavor. So just giving you a heads up.

Such a relief to find this variety pack!

By Thea on Oct 10, 2020

All the renal-friendly products for cats are tremendously expensive. Some she likes, some she won't touch. Being able to start out by trying out the variety of different types available in these sample sizes was invaluable! My cat was lukewarm on the dry food included, but when I mixed it with some of her old dry food, she tolerated it. She loved the small cans of wet food, and turned up her nose at the large pate-style cans of catfood in this pack. This really really helped me to know what sort of items to purchase in the larger quantities most things come in, as well as giving me a sense of what textures she was okay with. Vet recommended

By Sophie on Nov 17, 2020

We are so thankful for chewy.com - our 18 year old kitty was diagnosed with kidney problems in the same week we were needing to board her for the first time ever. With the help of chewy.com, we were able to order her prescription food and have it delivered directly to the vet's office. Worked out beautifully!

Refused to eat any of it

    By MeGive2 on Dec 13, 2020

My somewhat fussy old Siamese with kidney failure and hyperthyroidism would not eat any of the wet or dry food in this sampler. I appreciate that the KD sampler is offered though, just so we could give it a try.
