Just like the human epidemic, almost 50% of the pet population is overweight. Even a little extra weight can impact the pet's quality of life and relationship with family because that extra weight can reduce play time, impact mobility and affect the lifelong general health of your cat. Hill's nutritionists & veterinarians developed Prescription Diet r/d clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your cat's weight management. In fact, r/d is clinically proven nutrition for healthy weight loss in just 8 weeks.

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

I’ve been using this food with my cats for 4 months. It was a little challenging to get one of my cats to transition (he is picky), but now they both absolutely love the food and get excited when it’s time to eat. Even better, they have been losing weight! I weigh them every week, and their weight loss has been at just the right pace (not too fast). You may have to tweak the feeding amount now and then to maintain the desired weight loss, so it’s important to have an accurate food scale and be precise with your feedings, especially since my cats get different amounts of food. I chose to break up their daily food into 4 meals, with a slightly larger meal for the overnight since they won’t be eating again for a long time. All in all, I am very happy with this product, and I’m actually worried about having to eventually transition them to a different food, since they love this so much!
Just a note; both my Feline Familiars could not handle the Hill's Prescription Diet dry food. I was introducing new food gradually but they both threw it up. I ordered their normal food also because I didn't know the diet food would arrive as quickly as it did. So I donated 3/4 of the 16lb bag to two different households. Now I have to order another 16lbs sooner than anticipated. They both are overweight (18 & 20 lbs), but they are happy. Sincerely, Pirate & Lydia Sue's person, Brenda Kay
This food used to be good but recently changed and now half the bag is just a bunch of crumbs and not real solid cat food. This is annoying because I feed it to my overweight cat in a little food ball so she gets some exercise, so then my entire floor ends up covered in the bits all day and I am constantly vacuuming. I thought the first time it was a mistake from handling, but by the second bag full of little crumbs and bits and some of the other reviews here I realize that's just how it is now.
A quarter of the bag was just crumbs. The shape is different and the smell is bad. My cat barely wanted to eat it. Aside from the different look, a lot of it was crumbs and I had to throw a lot of the bag out as it was making my cat sneeze and I had to sort out the pebbles from the crumbs. Not sure how this is an improvement but now I guess it’s onto a new brand of weight reduction food for my kitty. The picture attached is an improved lesser crumbed version of the bag I got. The second picture is what’s left in the bag with some more crumbs I’ll have to throw out. Chewy was nice enough to refund my order though :).
My first review was not posted, so I am submitting another review. My overweight cat was prescribed this food and she did not care for it much. It was a struggle to get her to eat it. It also seemed to make her bloated and uncomfortable, which resulted in several vet visits which determined the high fiber content wasn’t settling well with her. I personally wouldn’t recommend this food based on my experience.
I have a cat that is overweight due to her slow metabolism and she's very finicky about what she eats. Transitioned her slowly to Hills weight reduction and she loves it. Now she's eating and is satisfied for a longer period of time whereas she was always hungry every 2 hours. Thank you Hills, very pleased with your product.
Cat won’t eat it we mixed with old to try and get her to eat it but she picks out new ones on floor and eats old food.
My cats have eaten R/D for years for weight management. They loved it, until now. Hill's made the inexplicable decision to "improve" their foods. The result is a kibble that's totally flat and stinks to high heaven. More importantly, both cats hate it. One of my cats was picked up off the streets before I adopted her and has always been very food focused. She never met a food she didn't like, up until now that is. I even bought a bag of another kind of dry food to add to their usual R/D/Oral Care mix, to do a slow introduction to the new R/D. What I've gotten is bowls with everything eaten except the R/D, which sits there and looks sad until I finally throw it away. Hill's -- if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!
My 2 cats have been eating this food for a couple years with much success. However, a couple months ago the morsal size/shape changed and I think the formula did too. Since starting on this food, they rarely experienced issues digesting it. However, since the change at least one of them pukes it up every couple days. I have tried other Hills Prescription foods before landing on this one and the new morsal looks a lot like the previous WD one. I am concerned that Hills has made changes that are having a negative effect on my cats. I plan to contact them directly and will post an update once I have something to share. The Chewy rep I spoke with recently shared that other customers have called about this same issue. Hummmm
Our cat easily transitioned away from other cat foods and is very happy with Hills weight reduction food. We don't know if it is helping her lose weight.
