Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Working good, not 100% yet
By UTICatOwner on Feb 28, 2021
The Hill's Prescription Diet s/d Urinary Care Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food seems to be helping my cat, Baby. He seems to be peeing less outside of his litter box and he seems more comfortable. However, he is still not peeing much (only a little increase in amount) and still going pretty often.

My cat won't eat it.
By Sundance on Jan 6, 2021
When I opened the bag and grabbed a handful, the food felt sticky, as if the inside of the bag had gotten damp. It was like grabbing a handful of food with wet hands; it stuck to my hands and I had to brush it off. I don't know if there was a problem with this bag or it it's just like that. And my cat won't touch it. This might be a great food for cats, but the weirdness of the feel of it coupled with my cat's refusal to eat it means it's just not the food for us.

Best for urinary issues
By Calliemama on Jan 28, 2021
My sweet old-man cat, Bob developed urinary issues several years ago. Our vet prescribed this food and he has been feeling much better ever since. Before we discovered what was wrong, he had to have two surgeries. So thankful for this prescription food to keep him well.

Fantastic!
By MaxAMinionsMom on Dec 28, 2020
After we found out that our kitty had a large struvite stone in his kidney, our Dr. prescribed this food. It worked AMAZINGLY well. At the 2 week follow up his stone was barely there, and his pain was gone. Highly recommend!!

Life saver
By Kitty on Oct 17, 2020
Two of my male cats have suffered from urinary blockages. I had both on Hills c/d stress Formula for two years. It works. My one kitty Shadow, decided he didn’t want the food anymore and stopped eating it. (I have other cats that eat regular cat food and that is what he wanted) Within a few months his blockage was back and life-threatening at this point. Through intense veterinary care and education he is back on track and eating exclusively the Hills science cd stress diet. I now feed him by himself so thats all he’s offered, therefore he eats it. Taking him off was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made. These two will remain on this diet for the rest of their lives. Urinary blockages in cats are very scary, frustrating and a terrible experience for both the cat and owner to go through. Education is key! Thank you Hills for coming up with a formula that works. I also give him the canned CD formula from hills and plenty of water. I purchased a water fountain and he is drinking like a champ. I use only distilled water for all my cats. The vets have a saying about getting those crystals to dissolve and pass through quicker, dilution is the solution. … more

Too costly
By Vicki on Aug 30, 2020
Cat's love it, but the price is ridiculous.. $25 for a 4 lb bag, is way to much.. My foster will be on this for life and I don't know if I can afford to pay this kind of cost. I am glad that she really likes it though, as she is a picky little girl.

Cheaper than the vet
By Mamawoo on Oct 15, 2020
Paid less and didn't have to run to the vet to get it or wait for them to order it and then pick it up. Put is on autoship to make it even more convenient.

I had a urination problem.
By OscarTheGrandCat on Jul 22, 2020
That's right, after urinating in my litter box, I would often dribble a bit around the house. Not full-blown incontinence, and not marking or any sort of volume. I know my box and always use it but sometimes a little dribble or drop would leak out as I walked. Hooray for Hill's Prescription Urinary Care diet! It worked fast, and tastes great! Everyone is happier with me! I'm glad my grandpeople took effective action!

My 3 year old cat seems to like it! We're hoping it rids of the heavy urine stench. She drinks a lot of water and pees a lot. I clean her litter box every morning!
