Transition Instructions

A gradual transition to a new pet food is important to avoid digestive upset. To transition, mix your pet’s current food with the new food. Over 7 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current pet food while increasing the amount of new pet food. In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend no transition or a shorter transition time.

How will you contact my vet?

Our Veterinary Diets team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my veterinarian’s authorization?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your vet’s authorization, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax it to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a veterinarian’s authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian’s authorization?

Veterinary Diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper authorization, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with the full name of the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Create your pet’s profile on Chewy.com.
  2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on your Veterinary Diets, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any authorization information has changed.
  3. If you have an authorization handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your authorization will expire and how many times we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Costly but essential food for cats at risk for Feline Urological Syndrome

    By on

Hill’s c/d diet works and is required for felines suffering from this issue. To reduce the risk of urinary blockage even further, I also sprinkle in some Hills s/d. This food will actually dissolve crystals if they start to re-form. The big drawback is the cost. Both of these products are among the priciest in the Hill’s line. Hill’s used to regularly issue coupons to help moderate their high prices but has now eliminated this customer friendly practice. There are rumors that Royal Canin plans to give Hills some badly needed competition but nothing has yet materialized.

Cats like it and it appears to be working

    By on

Both of my cats like this food, thank goodness, cause trying to feed just one (the sick one) this and the other cat something else would have been a nightmare. The bladder stones shrunk slightly after 2 weeks. Going back this week to check again, after 5 weeks. Glad they like this, cause the Hills wet food s/d she does not like so much and only eats 1/2 of it and I think that's only because she's on prednisone which makes her very hungry. From a service perspective, I love Chewy. Customer service folks have been helpful and professional and I amazingly receive my order at the front door in less than 24 hours from when I placed the online order. Can't ask for better than that.

Cat is unhappy with both products on my recent order

    By on

The pellets are very small and seemingly very hard, and the cat has a hard time crunching them even though she has good teeth. She will only eat it when I feed it to her from my hand (like her treats) and at that time she will painfully try to crunch on one or two and just swallow the rest whole. She has no problems with (and still likes) Hills non-vet-prescription hairball and urinary dried food, but needs to be on this new diet since her bladder stone operation. I am also continuing to have an issue with her potassium citrate supplement K-Plus. She enjoyed eating the first tub I purchased, and has refused to eat any of granules from the last two tubs. Cat wasn't a fan

    By on

Unfortunately my cat wasn't a fan of this food. I had hoped she would like it because of how well & fast it is supposed to dissolve crystals and sand in her bladder, but she refused to eat it. We trialed at least 5 different types of prescription foods for her, and she ended up only tolerating the Purine UR urinary formula food.

    Getting urinary problems under control

    By on

We picked this formula because our kitty was currently eating Instinct brand chicken and needed to be moved onto a prescription formula. The flavor has been very well tolerated and his urinary issues seem to be on the mend. I will certainly be coming back for future bags. Additionally, the way Chewy handles vet check-ins for this food is flawless!

    S/D cat food

    By on

This was the only s/d my cat would eat. He still wanted his old food, and I had to deal with tantrums but he would eat it.

Had to mix with wet food

    By on

After having surgery to clear crystals, my male cat was put on s/d. This is the only food he has ever turned his nose up at, leaving it in his bowl. If we mixed it with some s/d wet food he would eat more of it, but still licked the wet food off of most of it. When we switched to c/d he was much happier with that! I gave three stars because I credit hills with keeping the crystals at bay for the last year and a half after steady UTIs, my cat just didn't like this flavor for some reason.

    Best products and service!

    By on

One of my cats, Ash, has a urinary problem and my vet prescribed Hills s/d. Ash and his housemate Tim love the dry version but aren’t so crazy about the canned version. I’ve been trying to get creative to get them to eat the latter, such as mixing it with Purina Fancy Feast Classic canned food (with vet approval, of course). It’s a matter of life and death for Ash so thank you for carrying prescription pet food. You guys are awesome! Exceptional products, service, and prices — what’s not to love? Can’t believe I usually receive my order the very next day. And your website is exceedingly user-friendly, too. Keep up the great work!
