Dental care for your pet may be more important than you think. The accumulation of bacteria-laden plaque above the gumline can lead to long-term oral health issues. Recent studies have demonstrated there is an association between oral health issues and systemic general health issues affecting the kidney, heart and metabolic systems.

How do I order veterinary diets?

At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state?
Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills?
Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

Could this be used as the daily meal and not just a treat?
Answer by • Nov 12, 2018
This product can be fed as a complete and balanced diet for your dog. Adjust feeding amounts as necessary to maintain optimal weight. If you are unsure, ask your veterinarian. For best results & safety practices: Gradually transition to your pets new food over a 7 day period. For maximum benefit, this product must be fed as the only food. Keep fresh water available at all times. Have your veterinarian monitor your pets condition.
What size are the bites?
Answer by • May 21, 2022
The kibbles in this formula measure approximately 28 millimeters long x 28 millimeters wide.
Why do I need a prescription for this food?
Answer by • Jul 31, 2019
The prescription foods are formulated to meet specific diet restrictions from known health issues. Due to this restriction of specific nutrients, a healthy pet wouldn't do well on this food. A prescription is required to ensure the pet has been looked at by a vet and prescribed the correct food for their condition.
How long will an unopened bag last?
Answer by • Jun 28, 2022
As long as it has been stored properly throughout it's shelf life, this food should remain fresh until the best before date listed on the individual package, even after it has been opened. Bags of dry food should be stored in a cool, dry environment under 100°F (38°C) to prevent destruction of vitamins and oxidation of fats leading to rancidity. Foods will retain their best flavor if stored in the original bag, which provides a fat barrier. Storage at temperatures of 120°F (48°C) for more than 48 hours can accelerate the normal degradation or destruction of the vitamins. Studies by Hill's packaging engineers have shown that storage in a variety of plastic containers (garbage cans, zip-to-close bags, garbage or kitchen bags, Rubbermaid containers, plastic pails, etc.) may impart an odor and taste to dry foods that adversely effects palatability. Zip-to-close bags, garbage and similar bags will also not prevent fat migration (e.g., fat will accumulate on the outside of the bag). Storage in clean metal containers (small metal tins, metal garbage cans, etc.) is acceptable. Storage in the original bag in a pet food container is ideal.
My vet gave my pup one of these as a treat in his exam and he absolutely loved it. Bought a bag and both my dogs even the picky one that doesn't like anything love these. You get the best of both worlds a dog treat for your dog and also helps with dental care.

dental treats
These are highly recommended for dental care. I love that my dog loves them. I know she is getting good care for her teeth this way just by giving her a treat.

Big chunks that are good for grazers
Our vet prescribed Hill's TD for our Great Pyr rescue along with an enzyme brushing paste. The chunks are big, which is perfect for our grazer. I do wish, however, that the Hill's Dental Care t/d Big Chunks came in a salmon flavor.
