Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

VETERINARIAN RECOMMENDED
By HAPPYTHECAT on Feb 12, 2021
I like this flavor. My personal assistants gives them to me as treats to help with tartar. I think they could give me more, but my assistants utter sounds like "keeping weight under control" or something like that. I like when the vet prescribes something tasty.

Tastes Great & Helps My Teeth
By Boris on Jan 11, 2021
Boris has been having teeth and gum problems since I rescued him. I didn't realize he wasn't chewing his food anymore. Once he got prescribed this food I noticed he actually started chewing his food instead of swallowing it whole. I mix half of his normal Hill's food with this and he licks the bowl clean. I wish it wasn't prescription out of convenience sake considering it's just cat food...but it works for Boris!

Cats love it!
By Robin on Jan 19, 2021
Our vet recommended this food due to some early tooth decay for one of our cats. I was nervous due to the price not knowing if they'd like it BUT they beg for it like it was a treat. The kibble is big enough to encourage they chew it vs swallowing the previous brand whole. There's an added bonus of them not throwing up as often also!

By MarleneB on Jan 11, 2021
My Kitty is a senior and has some plac issues. I purchased a sample at my vet's office, thinking this was a treat. Well my Kitty Cat LOVES this so much, she actually drools! After finding out it's actually food, I purchased it for her and she continues to drool and love it as a treat!

This product WORKS!!
By Nikolas on Dec 11, 2020
I was skeptical at first, as anyone would be when buying a new brand of food. But wow after the first week I could already SMELL the difference, no more rancid kitty breath! I am so glad my vet recommended this dry food. It may be on the expensive side but SO WORTH IT!

Two finicky eaters pleased
By Tonkmom on Oct 21, 2020
My two Tonkinese would only eat fish flavored canned or dry food. After a dental visit, my vet gave me samples of t/d. I was surprised when they chewed through plastic bag containing t/d.They preferred it to the From Tunachovey they were eating, I have always been happy with Hill products. Pet store associates have always downplayed Hilll to me. But the high quality oils in Hill have given them such sleek, wonderful coats. They actually eat the CHICKEN flavor. Best of all, they didn't need a dental cleaning this year!
