About Hill's Prescription Diet GI Biome Food for Dogs

Hill’s GI Biome Diet

Hill’s Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome dog food takes a different approach to digestive care. Each formula uses a specific blend of active fibers, known as ActivBiome+, to help your dog’s stomach break down food more efficiently and promote healthier stools and regularity. It also contains Hill’s S+OX Shield ingredients, formulated to promote urinary health.

Activate the Gut Microbiome

When it comes to canine digestive health, the balance between good and bad bacteria is key. Promoting the growth of good bacteria helps keep problematic bacteria in check and supports ongoing digestive well-being.

Know the Signs of Digestive Issues

If you notice vomiting, diarrhea or soft stools, straining, stomach gurgling, flatulence, appetite changes, lethargy or depression in your dog, it may be from digestive trouble. See your vet for more insight and see if changing foods can help.

Risk Factors

Many things can trigger digestive issues in your pup, including food sensitivities, inflammation and bacterial, viral or parasite infections. Your vet can help determine what’s causing the trouble and figure out how diet can play a role.

Questions & Answers

9 Customer Questions

What is the shelf life once opened? Want to use this as a topper on her prescription dry food.
Answer by ChewyDec 29, 2020
After opening, canned products should be covered and stored in a refrigerator at 40 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit. In general, refrigerated canned foods should be used within five to seven days after opening. Canned products with high amounts of rice often have separation of water from the other canned product (free water will be seen at the bottom or around the side of the can) within a few days. This separation of water is called syneresis and does not change the nutritional characteristics of the food, but will affect food texture and possibly palatability. Since freezing dramatically changes the texture of canned products and adversely affects palatability, freezing canned pet food is not recommended either before or after opening.

mom versus dog

previously ordered hill's the turkey and rice stew for dubbie for a change of pace because he was slacking on the chicken biome frequently, but the vet told me I need to get him back on the biome, which i can find in the chicken, now i have the supply of chicken biome for him and have no money to change to anything,he goes back to the vet in Nov. which I will be housebound at cousins cause he has one floor, getting ready everything i must go thru getting ready for a complete r knee operation, which I will be in hosp for at least 5 days,2 wks aids come to me,then rides to PT for 4-7 weeks then in 4 mos other leg dubbie goes to vet in Nov with my cousin taking him

EXCELLENT PRODUCT, EXCELLENT SERVICE

My dog, Roscoe, has been quite ill from ITP and probable IMHA secondary to tick bite. He developed diarrhea from the steroids, chemo and immunosuppressants. The vet suggested this product. The product arrived within 48hours, BLESS YOU! It advertises that stools should return to normal in 24 hours. Spot on! Within 18 hours normal poops thankfully. Must be very tasty as he gobbles it up. Probably the steroids but I need to give credit to Chewy for getting it here so quickly and starting Roscoe on the road to recovery.

gravy

I have complained numerous times and I realize it is not chewy's fault, but the manufacturer. You need to get hold of the manufacturer and tell them once and for all to FIX THEIR MACHINES! I am getting tired of calling every time I get a new shipment because the food I get is 50% gravy. For the amount of money that I pay for this food, I should be getting 90% meat and 10% gravy.

My picky senior dog loves it

She’s got chronic GI issues due to giardia so has been on the dry biome for 3 years. Now that she’s 17 she’s not always eating her meals. I now mix the wet and the dry Biome and she gobbles it up. Her tummy seems to love it too.

Yummy

Sophie has begun eating her first 'wet' food since she has lived with me. About a month ago, after having eaten kibble for two years, she suddenly decided not to. Her vet recommended the kibble version of the Gastrointestinal Biome -- and she promptly threw it up. That was followed by bouts of diaherriah. I changed her to the 'wet' version, and she loves it and it has solved the nausea and diaherriah. Happy little dog makes happy Mom! Now, if it only wasn't so expensive!

Biome

This is a great food. I was concerned that my dog wouldn’t eat it, but she did. She suffers from constant diarrhea, and this food has brought her back to normal stools. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five stars it’s because it’s so expensive. But if you’re like me, your dog is worth it.

Product recently watered down.

I have been purchasing this food for years, suddenly my last order of an entire case was very watery. I typically can get 4 servings from a can for my little guy, lasted half as long as usual and the price has gone up this year. Extremely disappointed as this is the only food my dog can handle.

CHANGED!

I spend 125/2 weeks on this food for my Boston Terrier. Since he was 4 months old, he’s gone to the ER 5 times with aspiration pneumonia. This food was thick and chunky which helped him and his soft palate as kibble wasn’t the best option. Now, I truly believe he inhaled some of it as it’s extremely soupy! I’ve looked at other reviews that tell you to shake it but it’s just not the same as it was, with this starting in my late July order.

Hills changed!

I buy this food for my Westie by prescription only. I returned yet more of this food due to it what appears to be watered down. My dog loved it and couldn’t wait to eat each day until this past few months even as far back as last year. My dog became very determined he no longer wants to eat it.I’ve tried everything to no avail. I noticed if I shook the can and heard liquid I noticed those were the cans my dog wouldn’t eat. I protest Hills about theBiome food because I’m paying $5 a can and they are diluting it with water? My dog won’t eat it and it was my last hope to keep his digestive tract in tact. I consulted his vet and I was given a substitute that’s more like Pate more than dog food. I’m hoping Hills will correct this but I’m not optimistic they diluted it so they’re not gonna fix the recipe. I will be calling them to complain! Thanks for allowing me to bring this issue out to tge public.

The first two times he ate all of it but the past 2 days he won’t touch it. I would put 2-3 tablespoons in his kibble with enough water to make a gravy. Still have 10 cans left!
