Science Diet Urinary NON-Prescription Canned Cat Food Tastes Good

My 9 year old male ginger tabby recently has had urinary issues, specifically calcium oxalate stones and lots of inflammation. I bought this Science Diet urinary canned cat food as a back up for the Hill's c/d Multicare canned cat food and so far no urinary issues have returned. I'm a little confused at the difference in the NON-prescription and prescription foods (Science Diet v Hill's c/d). I've looked at the ingredients, they are very similar but a few slight differences. I feel it's necessary to feed the urinary food given the issues my cat has had. The wet food gets lots of extra water added to make a juicy slush and my cat loves it.

So I’ve never had a problem with this canned food and was even recommended by a vet Maybe a couple months after adopting another cat. And having her go through the transition of middle age to grown-up, age, catfood. she was good for probably about a month in an upset stomach start happening. So I got some pumpkin to settle the stomach and she was good. But then again it happened, and now I’m going to have to find something that’s a little more natural for the one cat.

Hill's non-prescription Pate

8 months ago my young (then overweight) male cat suffered a urinary blockage requiring emergency surgery. My vet insisted he should be fed the veterinary prescription diet pate with no added dry food. He didn't love it at first, but in time his hunger won out. I added slightly warm water to add moisture. He lost weight and gained energy. After 7 mos I've switched to the non prescription Hill's pate, plus I've added a few nuggets of the Hills dry urinary care food. He loves it and gobbles every bit of his twice-daily meals. He's gained only a few ounces over several months. I'll not allow him to get fat again. He seems much healthier and happier.

Major Price Increase & Quality Decrease

I used to get this wet food because my old cat had urinary issues. Because we no longer have our baby, we stopped getting it but forgot it was on auto ship so I got an extra case, so I use it as a treat for my other cats until recently. My cat had to get teeth pulled and she tends to have a lot of hairballs so I thought this was the perfect food to feed her during this time. However, I came on to buy some just to look at the outstandingly high price and reviews complaining about it making their cats sick and it being runny and low quality. I remembered getting a couple cases like people described in the past, where it was really runny and even my cats weren’t excited to eat it and they’re excited to eat pretty much everything. It also made my elderly cat with urinary issues throw up quite often. The major price increase led me to finally review. I’ve gotten this food since 2020 and it’s increased 26.77 since then. The last case I got was a year and a half ago, and in that time it’s increased 17.11. I understand inflation, however, if the price is high I expect a food that doesn’t reduce in quality as the price increases. I will be doing my research tonight on better brands.

Damaged cans

Majority of the cans came damaged and some were dented to the point of having been opened and had mold growing inside. If I hadn’t noticed the mold, I would’ve accidentally fed it to my cat.

Healthy Food Cats Will Eat

Not only is this food good for my cats, but they actually like it and usually eat all of the can cat food.

Just the right amount of food for my cat. He really enjoys the flavor apparently as he digs in every time!

Inconsistent

I’ve been feeding my cats this food for over 2 years. The amount of times it has made my cats sick has caused me to throw in the towel. Every time they got sick it was the day of or the day after I started feeding them from a new case. 4-5 times now. Sometimes the cats wouldn’t even eat it! The case I just opened has a weird consistency and has so much bone and dark cartilage that you couldn’t help but notice. This picture is of the second can I opened from case. The first one I tossed right away because of the dark speckles throughout. They also increased the price by $20 in 2 years. Wild. On to a different brand altogether!

Not too tasty

I try this with my cat, but he is not eating. Maybe should be the only wet food to give to him, but I will try more. He prefers another food not for urinary health
