Why does the quality of food make a difference in my pet's health?

Food is the body's fuel, and life does not exist without it. Your pet's health, behavior, temperament, longevity, ability to reproduce successfully and to recover from trauma depends greatly upon properly administered and sustained nutrition. "You are what you eat."

Would you say Holistic Blend® is 100% Completely Balanced?

Holistic Blend® has been formulated to exceed the standards set by AAFCO nutrient profiles. However, all pet foods when cooked or baked at a temperature exceeding 290 degrees Fahrenheit will cause some of the vitamins and minerals to be destroyed. We don't believe any pet food manufactured under these conditions to be 100% completely balanced, and suggest supplementing to obtain the maximum level of nutrition.

Why doesn't Holistic Blend® add probiotics, digestive enzymes or glucosamine to their pet foods?

Contrary to what other commercial pet feed companies will tell you, probiotics and digestive enzymes are heat - sensitive and are destroyed at 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Remember, other commercial pet feed is cooked or baked at a minimum of 290 degrees Fahrenheit. When you buy probiotics, digestive enzymes or glucosamine, they are all refrigerated.

What are BHA and BHT?

Both BHA and BHT are synthetic chemical preservatives that prevent the fatty contents of the pet food from going rancid. They provide endless shelf life. Both have been suspected of being carcinogenic. BHA and BHT inhibit the immune system as well as the absorption of glucose.

What is ethoxyquin?

Ethoxyquin is a quinoline - based antioxidant used as a food preservative and a pesticide (under commercial names such as "Stop - Scald"). It is commonly used as a preservative in pet foods to prevent the rancidification of fats. In some scientific studies, ethoxyquin has been shown to cause cancer in humans. It has been shown to cause mortality in fish. The FDA has banned this preservative from use in food grade products. It is also used to preserve the rubber on automobile tires.

My dog loves it and it helped him with his dermatitis that was caused by other famous dog food brand which contains grain, meal meats etc... This brand is really good! Good protein, fats and LOW CARB

    By on

So far its helping. I would have given it a five but its too soon to tell if the low carbs will help with the allergies. This food contains aprox 26% CARBS COMPARE TO OTHER WHICH CONTAIN 42-65% CARBS. Carbs are not found in just rice, corn, oats, barley ect. It is also found in all potatoes, peas, pea fiber, chick peas and others. These ingredients lead to our pets having leaky gut syndrome which then mimics allergies which then lead humans to give their pets shots medications and vaaccines. All this contributes to the downfall to your pets. The presence of to much starch will also lead to yeast and bacteria imbalance often visable due to causing red inflammed ears, dark pinkish shades So far its helping. There is much evidence that lowering the amount of carbs and adding other supplements like keifer, coconut oil, raw only fresh garlic, braggs apple vinegar, berries and kale, will help the healing process but always use orgainic and do you research. This is a great place to start lowering the carbs and strachs also check out Wysong. They have a food I believe that is 90% starch free. Please watch the protein levels and add the appropiate supplements any diet that is imbalanced is harmful including to much or to little protein, vitiamins, even water. … more

Hurray! My picky dog eats this food!

    By on

I have been on a difficult journey of experimentation with many different dog foods. I always consult the Dog Food Advisor website before choosing a food, and I only try those rated 5 stars, with no recalls. This food met those criteria. It is made in Canada, with quality ingredients. Nevertheless, I wish there was a way to tell if dogs actually like a kibble before buying it- but life is never that easy... I had never heard of this brand before, so I was tentative about ordering it, but it seems I hit upon one that my picky dog will eat...at least for now. Thank you, Chewy, for giving us so many excellent choices, and for standing behind the products you sell!

My dog’s stomach issues have fully resolved!

    By on

My husband and I have always been very strict with our dog’s diet. No human food and we have always kept him on his dry dog food and the same brand doggy treats. Shiro had been on Acana ever since he was 6 weeks old. He grew healthy to his vet’s standards but I always found strange that once or twice a week he would throw up bile. We thought it was something in our apartment complex since they’ve been known to spray the grass with pesticides. One day I woke up to my dog having bloody diarrhea and bloody vomit. I rushed him to the vet where they kept him for 4 days and he was placed on the prescription food diet for sensitive stomachs. $850 later I said bye bye to Acana and began researching My husband and I have always been very strict with our dog’s diet. I was incredibly pleased that it was Canadian based (since imo the Acana line decreased its quality when it was transferred to Kentucky in the USA) and the only dog food I found that had NO controversial ingredients. Everything seemed to indicate that this would be a suitable replacement for Acana, and ohh boy how happy was I when in just 1 week, my dog’s stool looked great, and he had not thrown up!! 1 week turned into 2, and 2 weeks turned into 2 months. I am 100% pleased with Holistic Blend and will continue to purchase their turkey and Salmon grain free food. I do hope they bring out 1 or 2 more flavors of the grain free because my dog is slightly picky and he tends to go on hunger strikes when he tires of his food lol. He loves the flavor of Holistic Blend and besides that 1 hiccup of him being stubborn, he always rushes to the bowl when he hears me opening the bag. … more

    My dogs are not picky

    By on

I try to switch different foods, but I still mix them with my homemade food. Vegetables, rice, venison, chicken.. I wouldn't want to feed my dogs a bowl of dry everyday.. same old food. It's like feeding your kid a bowl of dry cereal 24/7 Back to the food. They liked it, but Nordic breeds eat anything. It's high in protein, good ingredients, 5 stars rated. I wish they had lamb. My dogs love lamb. I'm trying gentle giants next. Use to buy only orijen. Would I buy this again. Yes. My dogs ate it no problem. But, if it was just thrown to them dry, I doubt it.

Fast Shipping - dogs like it!

    By on

Very impressed with Chewy.com. The food arrived a day early, and my dogs love it! I should note, my dogs are not picky eaters. The ingredients look healthy, and comparable to Orijen (What I'm switching from).

    A great replacement for Orijen

    By on

Orijen was the only food that my dog could tolerate. Others made his poop so mushy. Chewy customer service recommended this brand when they quit carrying the Origen. And they were right. It seems very much like the Origen and my dog’s poop is firm.

My pitbull is doing great on Holistic Blend!

    By on

I have a 1.5 year old pittie that has seasonal allergies. We try to support healthy skin with premium food. My vet suggested switching to a food with turkey. Previously he was on Acana, but got to the point where he was pooping 4 times a day! (He was only getting 1.5 cups of kibble, twice a day for an 84 lb dog.) Since switching to HB he's back to a regular twice daily schedule and he seems to enjoy the food. He had to drop to 1.25 cups because HB has more calories per cup, and the bag of food is $20 cheaper than Acana. Win-win for all of us.

    Disappointed

    By on

My Wife, and I have been having a hard time finding a cruelty free dog food that our dogs actually like. I had high hopes for this one after reading the positive reviews of owners with picky dogs. Oh well...guess it's not for everyone. The search continues for a food they love as much as the grain free Blue Buffalo.
