Dogs over 160 lbs: Add 1/3 cup per additional 10 lbs.
Standard measuring cup holds approximately 3.7 oz of Holistic Select Grain Free Large & Giant Breed Health Chicken Meal & Lentils Recipe.
Combination Feeding: If feeding Holistic Select wet food, reduce dry amount by 1/3 cup for every 6.5 oz of wet food.
The best way to transition onto a new food is to gradually introduce the food by mixing it with the old diet. Mixing the food will allow the dog to acclimate to the new taste and not overindulge on the new food
When food transition is not an option, there are a few ways to ensure a good transition:
Feed multiple, smaller volume meals. This will decrease the likelihood of over-consumption and provide for a more consistent, firm stool. This is an especially good option for puppies and senior dogs.
Add clean warm water to the food to help soften it.
Add a digestive aid such a boiled brown rice or sugar-free canned pumpkin
switched RBCH pup to this food and she can not stop itching ears. Last food from chewy I didn't have this issue.....may be individual issue my pup is having but will switch back to other brand. She is now 8 months old
After having diarrhea issues with our Great Dane puppy a Chewy representative recommended this food for our giant breed puppy, Tego. He loves it and his diarrhea is under control.
The ingredients listed are very good. However, my puppy has constant loose bowels and diarrhea from this food. I have to switch him now. We had to give him rice and chicken often and stop this food. He had normal bowel movements when we stopped it but as soon as we added the food again the diarrhea started up. It does not agree with our 7 month old Berner and we decided to try something else. We also tried the grain free version with the same results. Our vet advised against grain free dog food. I am sure many pups do well with Holistic Select but not our Berner.
Good food. My basset puppy has a hard time chewing the thick kibble. Adding water and letting it soften up helps. The bag listed weight on Chewy website is 24lbs. But in reality it arrives at 22.5 lbs on the bag.
The plus side of the food: the dog had firm stools. The negatives: my dog barely eats it unless I mix in hard-boiled eggs, yogurt or a Stella & Chewy’s mix-in. His previous brand of food he would scarf the entire bowl in less than 2 minutes. With this brand, he’ll just lay on the floor and stare at the bowl unless I add something to it. The other negative: instead of pooping 2-3 times per day, he now goes 5-6 times per day and the piles are HUGE! I’m going thru waste bags like crazy.
My Daniff loves this food. I love how easy Chewy makes it for me!
We switched our gsmd puppy to this food recently to see if grain free will help his itching. It improved a bit and he loves it.
I have used holistic select for 18 years. Our collies could not tolerate any other dog food. Two of our dogs thrived well on the formulas. We got a new collie puppy a month ago and purchased the grain free puppy formula. Unfortunately she could not tolerate this formula. She had 8-9 bowel large movements a day with mucus and accidents in her kennel. We had to discontinue this formula. It is difficult for us to purchase holistic select where we live and have to order it on line. Hopefully as she grows we can return to this brand again.
Seemed to like the kibble and even used as treats.
Low calcium content and low calcium -phosphorous ratio are excellent for large breed puppies
