Mix food with warm water, stir well and wait 3 minutes for food to hydrate. These guidelines are based on the requirements of lean and more active, Our foods must be hydrated with water before serving, but you can add slightly more or less water than we suggest, according to your pet's taste. Refrigerate or discard any leftovers.
If your cat has never tried our foods before, we recommend starting out slowly. Over a period of 1 to 2 weeks or so, start by adding just a small amount of the Honest Kitchen (with water added) into your cat’s current meals. Gradually increase the amount of the Honest Kitchen while decreasing the amount of your cat’s original diet.
The Honest Kitchen may be mixed in with your cat's current dry kibble, canned, raw, etc. However, we do not suggest adding in other extra ingredients during the transition if you can avoid it, especially if your pup’s system is very sensitive. After you’ve successfully transitioned your cat to the new food, perhaps after 2-4 weeks or so, and they are doing well, then you may consider adding in extra ingredients or introducing another honest kitchen recipe, etc.
How do I make your dehydrated recipes?
Making our dehydrated foods is as easy as 1-2-3!
- Just add water
- Wait 3 min while food re-hydrates
- Serve with love!
For our base mixes, follow the same steps above and also add your cat's favorite protein.
Do I have to add water to your dehydrated recipes?
Yes! It is imperative that you re-hydrate our dehydrated recipes before serving. The food swells when it comes in contact with moisture so it's important that this takes place in the food bowl before consumption, and not in your pet's tummy. When the food is hydrated with water, it will not swell further after eating, which is why our food is so great for breeds who are prone to bloat.
Do I have to feed The Honest Kitchen foods as 100% of my pet's diet?
No, our foods may be included in our pet's diet in a variety of ways! Check out the A,B,C's of how you can use them:
-
A is for All Alone Feed Honest Kitchen food by itself as a complete meal (except for our Base Mixes, which you mix with meat). Just add water and it's ready to go!
-
B is for Base Mix Use as a base for your own home-prepared ingredients. Lots of people love to make their pets' food. Honest Kitchen recipes are an excellent starting point (with balanced calcium: phosphorus ratios) that you can mix with your own meat and other goodies.
-
C is for Complementary Mix with kibble as a convenient, healthy whole food topping that provides more phyto-nutrients than cooked diets. Because our foods are gently dehydrated, they retain much more of the natural nutrition that conventional pet food production methods. If you aren't ready to make the switch to 100% fresh or dehydrated food, try our recipes as toppers, so your pet can still enjoy some of the benefits of a whole food diet! Feed a _ and _ mixture of Honest Kitchen and your favorite dry food or in whatever ratio works well for your pet.
-
D is for Defrosting error Use as a stand-in when you forget to thaw your raw! Some of our customers feed raw food most of the time. But sometimes, schedules can be disrupted or plain old absent-mindedness can set in. Our foods are great to keep on hand as a stand-in for just such occasions!
-
E is for Emergencies Dehydrated foods are compact to store - you can keep our products in your emergency preparedness kit for up to 12 months and they'll be easy to take if you ever have to leave home in a hurry.
-
F is for Fun outdoors Take on your travels, backpacking and camping - our dehydrated foods are lightweight, and quick & easy to prepare for a tasty meal on the road. Each dry-measured cup of our food makes a whole pound of fresh food when re-hydrated.
What exactly does 'Human Grade' mean?
Human Grade means food grade or fit for human consumption. For us, it's a line in the sand about the quality and integrity of the finished products we send out the door. We blend our healthy pet food in a human food facility that makes things like breakfast cereal and bakery mixes. So, we abide by the same strict standards for safety, cleanliness, record-keeping and overall quality as the place that whips up your favorite cookie dough.
Is your food raw?
Our recipes are made from dehydrated whole food ingredients, but they're not quite the same as raw. Our meats, fish, and eggs are gently steamed at about 165 degrees F before being dehydrated to make sure they're safe and free of any pathogens, without the use of harmful irradiation. The steaming process means that these ingredients are not considered raw. Our leafy greens are also steamed in a dry-steam process which takes place after dehydration, as a food safety measure. All our remaining produce is dehydrated below 104 degrees F, and is still considered raw after the drying is complete. Our potatoes and grains are flash heated (and rolled in the case of our grains) to help break down the cellulose, which aids in digestion. They are then gently dehydrated to remove the moisture.
How will my cat's teeth get clean with a soft food?
Contrary to popular belief, kibble doesn't actually clean the teeth. For the most part, cats actually swallow their kibble whole and don't chew their food at all. You'll know this if you've ever had the misfortune of seeing your pet regurgitate his kibble, when those pellets come back up the same way they went in! This means the pellets don't have a chance to come into much contact with the teeth, and even if they were to be crunched, they aren't really hard enough to have an abrasive action that's effective enough to scrape tartar from the teeth. If kibble is chewed, the sugars and refined carbohydrates are actually more likely to get impacted into the gum line, which is detrimental for the long term health of the teeth and mouth.
I can see bits of food in my cat's stool, are they not absorbing the nutrients?
When cats eat a high moisture, whole food diet such as ours, the stool will not look the same as it did when consuming a dry kibble or raw food. The stool will reflect the colorful ingredients going in. It's not abnormal to see pieces of carrots, spinach, etc. present in the stool. The nutrients, phyto-nutrients and antioxidants from the foods are still being absorbed. Since the food is high in moisture and fiber it's also common for the stool to be more voluminous.
Why can't I feed my puppy the Base Mix recipes?
Puppies have slightly different mineral needs. Of particular interest are calcium and phosphorus, which our bases mixes do not support the levels and ratios necessary for puppies. We have several diets that are designed to support puppies during their rapid growth months.
Once I've added water, can I refrigerate the food? For how long?
Once the dehydrated food has been rehydrated with warm water, you may cover and refrigerate any uneaten portions for 2-3 days. Frozen leftovers will keep for even longer. We suggest adding a little bit of warm water to the mix and stirring before serving.
Do I have to add extras, like meat or other foods?
No, adding other ingredients to our diets is not necessary (except for our base mixes which require protein to be added). Our foods are formulated to meet the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles and can be fed alone. However, many of our customers love to mix up their companion's meals with home-made extras. We encourage this because we think pet's deserve variety in their diets just like we humans do. Our foods have balanced calcium: phosphorus ratios to allow you to add in extras in moderate amounts without throwing these important minerals outside their optimum ratios.
If I want to add extras, what do you recommend?
Popular add-ins are meat, raw meaty bones, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, veggies and fruits. We recommend 1/2 to 1 cup of extra ingredients for each dry-measured cup of the food.A more active cat would have these quantities added to the regular food serving. For a less active or senior pet, you can cut back the amount of Honest Kitchen food to allow for the additional ingredients being included, and prevent the calories from increasing too much.
How do I store your food and what is the shelf life?
Our dehydrated foods are naturally shelf stable and should be stored in a cool, dry place - out of sunlight. We don't recommend refrigerating our food when it's dry, because this can introduce moisture. If you want to freeze the food, you should hydrate it first (some of our customers like to freeze in individual pre-made portions). If you do choose to place the dry food in the freezer, we recommend keeping the box in the freezer for the remainder of its use.Our Complete Diets have a shelf life of twelve months from the manufacturing date, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity where you live. The date of manufacture is printed on the top of every box in a specially designed tear out and keep card.

Nutritional Powerhouse + Picky Cat = Creative Adjustments

Basically you're trying to convert someone whose taste buds are acclimated to fast-food fare over to a home-cooked healthy diet overnight. In January, my cat had her canines and a couple molars pulled. The vet advised to get her on wet food and she'd live a long life without teeth. However, I couldn't get past the packaging waste, and pricing for nutritionally mediocre or just plain bad canned food. Even freeze-dried or refrigerator options were in small, wasteful packaging. Found THK and gave it a shot. Attempt #1 = Instant failure. Cat wouldn't get past the sniff test. Next attempt I actually read the directions/advice on the THK label, groaned that I'd have to invest in more of the temporary wet food, but I wasn't chucking out the new food just yet. It took two weeks to get up to a pea sized mount in the food as opposed to the five or so days to conversion the label advises, that's the level of stubborn I worked with. Another week and finally got over the hurdle enough that it was down to about a scant teaspoon of wet canned food with a tablespoon of THK. Not wanting to waste a full bag of kibble I just bought a month before the teeth removal, I ground some up and sprinkled it into the THK mix, hydrated it, and wow, picky cat scarfed her food. The most obnoxious, disgusting, but funny noises you can imagine a little fussy cat would make. Since then, no more wet canned food required (yay!) and I've been dialing back the ground up kibble to the point that she eats around chunks that are bigger than bacon bit sized. Now I just add a light sprinkle to the THK and she's good to go. If you have a picky beast like I do, and have the time and inclination, I think THK is worth the extra long-term effort for the nutritional and resource value. … more

Exactly what I needed
By Gina on Jan 6, 2021
Won't lie, transitioning to this food took longer than I thought it would and was challenging. I also agree with another reviewer that having solid dried cranberries in here is frustrating. But other than that, this serves my cats perfectly. One needs very soft food due to a previous injury, and every canned pate I tried needed to be run through a food processor. So I was patient, and now she loves this. It's perfect that I can make it whatever texture I need. Plus, once my other cat saw what she was eating, he wanted some too and the transition was much easier! Other benefits - way less waste (all those cans!), way better smell, and easier to store!

Works for cat's colitis
By CMDV on Feb 19, 2021
So far this really seems to be helping my cat's chronic colitis. Things have been going well (knock wood!). I like that there are not a ton of ingredients aside from the food and vitamins/minerals. And my cat really likes the taste of it too!

Cat Loves It!
By PetMama on Dec 20, 2020
I’ve been feeding my 5-year old dog Honest Kitchen for over three years now so when I adopted a cat I knew I wanted to find a cat food with as high quality ingredients. Turns out Honest Kitchen makes a cat food! I had been feeding my kitten Hills Science wet food & dry food but I swapped the canned food for this and my cat had no problem with the change. It took a couple of times mixing to find the right consistency for him which maybe is why others cats seemed to not like it. My cat likes it a little more runny (almost soupy). You also have to let it sit for a few minutes before you serve it which maybe is another reason why other reviewers cats don’t like it. Improved Cat Health
By KWhite on Jan 8, 2021
My cat, now 2 years old, has eaten this food for the past 1.5 years. As a kitten, he had trouble with soft stools. Appeared to be a food intolerance. I had switched his food a few times to find something that would not bother him. Found this and also got him on the probiotic for two months and his gut has been restored! 10/10 would recommend.

Every Cat is different
By Cat3 on Feb 11, 2021
I was so excited for this food, still think it's a wonderful idea. But all 3 of my cats won't touch it, even tried changing up the consistency of it and nothing. I am sure other cats love it, but unfortunately my guys do not.

Good stuff!
By Diverson on Dec 19, 2020
It took a bit for my cat to convert, but stick with it. He needed more water content in his food due to crystals which seems to have cleared up. I began the conversion with powder on top of his canned food and over time then mixed more up with adding a dollop of canned food mixed in. Now he waits while I mix it up!!! Thank you Honest Kitchen!

Honest Kitchen cat food
By JulieDT on Feb 23, 2021
I like the product but my cat did not. She's almost 17 and seems a bit set in her ways. I'll use it as a treat in my dogs lucky mats for now.

Cats won’t eat it- not what I expected
By Irene on Dec 2, 2020
This is a powder that you add water to make a paste with ( or add more water to make a pate with but hate to give the impression it’s anything like a pate). My cats won’t eat it and it hardens like concrete in the bowl after sitting there. I didn’t realize it is a powder but rather thought it was more like a freeze dried chunks/pieces. I loved the idea of healthy human grade ingredients but it is no good if the cats won’t eat it.

Nice concept
By Luckygoatlady on Feb 10, 2021
Nice idea to have all the proper nutrients cats need. However, my cats disagree. No matter how I tried I couldn’t get them to eat it.
