Mix food with warm water, stir well and wait 3 minutes for food to hydrate. Stir in your meat of choice. We suggest dividing daily amount into 2 servings. For larger dogs adjust accordingly. Please remember these are only guidelines! Your individual dog's needs will vary with age and activity. Extra fat such as salmon oil or coconut oil may also be added, if desired. You can add slightly more or less water than we suggest, according to your pet's taste. Refrigerate or discard any leftovers.

Transition Instructions

If your dog has never tried our foods before, we recommend starting out slowly. Over a period of 1 to 2 weeks or so, start by adding just a small amount of the Honest Kitchen (with water added) into your dog’s current meals. Gradually increase the amount of the Honest Kitchen while decreasing the amount of your dog’s original diet.

The Honest Kitchen may be mixed in with your dog’s current dry kibble, canned, raw, etc. However, we do not suggest adding in other extra ingredients during the transition if you can avoid it, especially if your pup’s system is very sensitive. After you’ve successfully transitioned your dog to the new food, perhaps after 2-4 weeks or so, and they are doing well, then you may consider adding in extra ingredients or introducing another honest kitchen recipe, etc.

Meat-Free Base Mixes

The Honest Kitchen's Base Mix recipes provide vegetables, fruits, vitamins and minerals that can be mixed with your dog's favorite protein for a complete and balanced meal. These grain-free mixes make it easy to feed a raw diet or a homemade meal without spending a lot of time in the kitchen.

  • My dog LOVES this food!

    By on

I purchased this for my 10 year old Scottish Terrier. I had been feeding an organic kibble to my four dogs for years. Recently the brand reworked it's formula and a main added ingredient was chickpeas( garbanzo beans). Three of my dogs are fine with this addition but my Scottie Kelly began to appear uncomfortable. Her abdomen was tight and I wondered if she was getting gas from the beans! I gave her baby gas drops and that helped so I though instead of treating a problem I eliminate beans from her diet and see if I noticed a difference . She's had dental extractions in the past and it took her a long time to eat her kibble so I thought she'd enjoy a softer food.Friends had been feeding I purchased this for my 10 year old Scottish Terrier. My Kelly loves this new food! Within a few days I noticed a change in her. She was much happier and more energetic and more playful because her tummy was no longer bloated with gas! . Ive been adding protein and oils to her meals( as I do for all my dogs) but I think next time I may order the Honest Kitchen recipe with either chicken or beef. I do wish all the ingredients in Honest Kitchen were organic but if she continues to do well I may be switching all my dogs over to Honest Kitchen. . … more

  • This food is a lifeline for my beautiful dog with cancer

I feed this to my five dogs every morning. I mix it with a small amount of high-quality kibble and a larger amount of high-quality canned food. Initially, half of the dogs were hesitant to eat it, and one (very smart female Chihuahua-Jack Russell mix) loved it right away. After a few short days, every one of my dogs loves this base mix. They have been eating this for two weeks now. They are all exhibiting good digestion and less gas. The BONUS: my beloved, super-wonderful female Australian Shepherd mix -- who has osteosarcoma and receives Carboplatin treatments -- had been losing so much weight that her ribs and spine were tragically jutting out. I had tried to stimulate her appetite in other ways with other foods, but nothing seemed to make a difference. Now, with this Honest Kitchen base mix, she has been slowly regaining a healthy amount of weight, and I am ecstatic. She seems to love it and have more energy and strength. I feel so good about feeding this human-grade food to my dogs. I only wish I had done it sooner. … more

  • So far so good!

I just got through my first box with my 4 dogs. One of mine has what we think is a food allergy and chews his feet. The redness, swelling and foot chewing has gotten so much better! I noticed an instant positive change in their bowel movements as well. Currently I’m adding venison as the protein for mine. They love it of course! Super easy to hydrate the food and I’ve been storing it in the fridge for about 2 days, which is all that it lasts with my crew. Great product so far! Looking forward to seeing more positive results.

  • IT'S WONDERFUL SO FAR

    By on

My Westie has diarrhea problems. He's OK on dry for about a month, then he has what I call a "blow-out" with diarrhea that takes about two weeks of chicken and rice to stop. I have tried the very (best?) ones. He was suffering one when I started to transit him to this base mixed with chicken. First of all, he is crazy about it. He practically yanks the bowl out of my hand. On the second day the poop started to firm up and the third seems to be the end of it. I only hope it lasts. So--so far so good.

  • My dogs love this stuff!

On the advice of my holistic vet, I decided to decrease the commercial kibble my dogs receive, and increase the amount of 'whole foods' in their diet. One of my pups is an elderly boy with severe osteoarthritis, one is still recovering from her TPLO (knee surgery) last year and I'm trying to keep her weight healthy, and my youngest struggles with yeasty paws & chin... i decided to try THK's base mix, which gives me the flexibility to add different fresh proteins to their diet as well (i mostly cook chicken, lamb, eggs & occasional liver for them). They all absolutely LOVE this stuff (despite their usual aversion to anything 'green' & healthy-looking). They wait impatiently for the 3 minutes it takes to rehydrate, and the other 3 minutes it takes me to shred & chop the meat I add... then lick their lips in anticipation as soon as I put their bowls down. I feel better about giving them something healthier and 'homemade', and their health has improved as well. Shiny coats, brighter energy, less yeasty-paw symptoms, etc. The only reason I don't feed them 100% Honest Kitchen is because my elder boy lost too much weight when I was feeding him this exclusively. (He needed to shed a few pounds, but he got too skinny too fast, so I had to add a 1/2 ration of kibble back into his twice daily meals.) Regardless, I will continue to feed them this stuff forever, because i really love this company and this product. As an added bonus, because it's dehydrated, it stores well for longer periods of time, and makes an excellent addition to my 'natural disaster emergency bug-out bag' that I always keep on hand since I live in the land of earthquakes & wildfires! So if me & my pack ever need to hit the road, I won't have to worry about my kiddos not having emergency food. Thanks THK & thanks Chewy for carrying this stuff! We all love it. … more

We recently switched to The Honest Kitchen grain free base mix exclusively for all three of our dogs. Our oldest, which is a Weimaraner has had skin & eye allergies/irritations for the last few years that have gotten worse with age. Removing grain (including most, if not all starches) has helped her out tremendously. The base mix from The Honest Kitchen is quick, easy & all three dive into their food with excitement EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!

  • Great Service

    By on

My order arrived quickly and was as described. I was excited to give it to my dog. Unfortunately, she wasn't quite as excited, but she ate it. She is no longer allowed table food, so it was a time of adjustment for her. I will use this again. She can have turkey mixed with a limited ingredient grain free dog food for now. Food allergies are a problem, but she had no problem on this food. She is adjusting well.

  • My two dogs go nuts over the grain free greens

    By on

My little dog who is now 11 needed a diet switch. His liver enzymes were super high on his blood work. We found a butcher who takes an entire chicken & grinds it up into a meat paste. We give the. 1% of the body weight am and 1% pm, they split a raw egg & we use the greens. Before we used pumpkin, blue berries and wheatgrass. I feel much more confident that this HK greens is balancing out all of our dogs needs. The poop is really solid and a lot more now- I guess that’s a good thing since they both have anal glad squeezes every few months (maybe this will help?). Need our do another blood panal on Arnold, now that he is on a100% raw diet. PS my two dogs looooooove the greens!!!!

  • A Great Starting Point

    By on

I love being able to control my dog's protein source and switch up proteins frequently. This base mix is awesome and he loves it. Makes for solid (albeit green) number twos... Hydrates in only 3 minutes which is a plus. This base mix is a great way to dip your toe into homecooked if you find all the math, nutritional charts and complicated recipes a little confusing.
