    Veterinary Internal Medicine Nurse

By JennysMom on Oct 7, 2020

As a Veterinary Internal Medicine Nurse, I see just about every food on the market doing what I do. During the pandemic, I got a box of Honest Kitchen Whole grain chicken dehydrated dog food just to be on the side of caution in case our regular dog food (Science diet metabolic and mobility) started going on backorder. Out of curiosity, I wanted to try Honest Kitchen just to see if my dogs would be interested (disclaimer: both of my dogs would eat dirt given the chance) and they absolutely loved it! I have a 6 y/o FS Rottweiler and a 4 y/o MN Minpin mix and the box lasts us for quite a while! Seeing their enthusiastic reaction to the taste, I had to look into the ingredients, and let me tell you I was presently surprised. I have been searching high and low for a clean, grain inclusive diet without all the corn/etc fillers for my kiddos and the Honest Kitchen checks all my boxes. Not to mention their superfood toppers are incredible! The only change I would love to see in the future is if they could provide dehydrated grain inclusive kibble so my dogs could have the dental benefit of a hard kibble while getting the benefits dogs need from a grain inclusive diet. For now, we will just continue brushing their teeth twice a day. 100+ stars for the ingredient quality though! … more

    Great food with some caveats

My dogs (two pit bull mixes) were crazy about it. However, I won’t be feeding it anymore for a couple reasons. A) It’s expensive when you’re feeding two BIG dogs, one of whom is an energizer bunny who burns up his calories like a bonfire. The cost was just insupportable. It might be more doable for someone with one dog that is smaller, or someone with more income than me. B) It’s messy! The energizer bunny ate it like his life depended on it and managed to slop chunks of it out of the bowl and all over the floor. While he’s happy to clean it up, some of it always escapes, and I don’t love having to mop the floor under the feed bowl twice a day. C) The texture kinda forces the dog to eat slower - lots of lapping and licking - which should be a good thing, especially with big dogs who can be prone to bloating. However, my more laid back dog developed godawful gas (sorry, no way to sugar coat that) with all that licking and lapping, probably because he swallowed too much air. It just wasn’t supportable. Someone else might have a different experience from me, and for someone with a smaller dog, or less dogs, or more money, this is a great quality food. … more
