Feeding Instructions

For Adult cats, feed 1 can per 6 - 8 lbs. of body weight per day. Kittens require up to 2 and a half times this amount. For pregnant and lactating females, allow free access to food. Adjust the amount of food you serve based on the age, size and activity level of your cat. Food should be fed at room temperature.

Transition Instructions

If you are currently free-feeding a kibble, the first step is to feed your cat at meal times. Put the kibble down for a 20-30 minute time frame for a few days to help your cat recognize that this is feeding time. Yes, your cat will be hungry at these mealtimes if they have been used to grazing all day long, but this step will help in the transition.

Once these meal times are established, then try introducing canned food. Your cat will either like it and your transition took no time at all, or you may have to keep trying to entice the cat. If your cat will not eat the canned food you have offered, try putting some kibble on the top to entice the cat. If that doesn’t work, feed kibble and try a different protein at the next mealtime. It may take a while – a few day or a few weeks – for your cat to realize that this is food, but remember that you are doing it to better your cats health.

    Great quality, boring taste

    By on

I do love this stuff so far. I had to pick a new brand since our go-to was discontinued and reading up led me to Hound & Gatos. The ingredients are fantastic compared to most others brands on the markets. Unfortunately like most reviews seem to say, cats don't seem very interested in it. I think only selling cases of one flavor is a terrible way to sell cat food. Cats get bored with the same flavor and need need variety. Lucky for us cat people, we are smarter than our cats and the silly compaines that can't be bothered. I grab a few single cans at the local pet store; Instincts is a great healthy brand and excellent for the picky eaters, and Royal Canin is well known among vets for its excellent I do love this stuff so far. I grab a few single cans at the local pet store; Instincts is a great healthy brand and excellent for the picky eaters, and Royal Canin is well known among vets for its excellent pet food nutrition. I mix a bit of one of these in with the Hound & Gatos, and microwave for a few seconds to warm up the food if it was chilled before, that really helps too. Chewy also sells freeze dried chicken or turkey toppings, a few sprinkles can entice them to eat as well if they are still turning up their nose. Seems like a lot of work to get them to eat some cat food, but it is healthier than red dye 4 and all the other additives so I'm okay with it. If you're buying 25 cans for 50$ you probably are too. The shipping was fast, the packaging was all good, and the actual consistency of the product was all approved by a very meticulous cat momma before the first feeding. I have seen horror stories online from time to time with pet food shipments but our case was in excellent condition. … more

    My cat loves it!

    By on

Like many others, I've heard good things about the quality Hound & Gatos but was worried about buying such a large case without first having my cat try it considering many reviews state that the palatability is questionable. I went with trout and liver because it had the highest reviews of the flavors and although my cat is not very picky about wet food, he does prefer fish. My cat loves this flavor! Very curious about how he'd like the other fish options.

    My cats love this

My two picky kitties love this food. They prefer this flavor over the other H&G cat food, although they do love the duck and game bird flavors too. But this one is the clear winner.

Hound and Gatos has been great for my Egyptian Mau. He’s 9 and I’ve been feeding it to him since he was around 5.

    Changed Formula in late 2017

    By on

My cats loved this food until they changed the formula around October last year. It was a completely different consistency and my cats both went from licking their dishes clean to barely eating any of it. After trying several other flavors and brands their new pick is Triumph trout flavor. It's much less expensive, so that's a win.

A little SMELLY, but who am I say say; I'm not a cat

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

Looking for another good alternative to add to what my 2 cats are already eating. They need variety not only for variety's sake, but to have different types of proteins, vitamins and minerals from different sources. Bottom line is that they devour it.

Good for a change now and then

    By on

This wouldn't work on a daily basis because he much prefers the chicken over the trout but it's good for every once in a while. He doesn't lick the bowl clean but eats most of it and you just can't find better ingredients. I'm a big fan of Hound & Gatos foods and am very pleased Chewy carries them. I will continue to purchase the trout, just not as often.

    Texture too runny

    By on

Too runny. Sometimes the ferals have eaten it but few and far between, probably our pudgy alpha male pigging out. It's something in-between pate and sauce, quite pale which would be fine if any of my cats would touch it. Smell wise not too strong, but that's never bothered my cats with other brands before so I don't think that's it. I read 'pate' and having gone through the other flavors of Hound & Gatos, chicken, lamb, salmon, I figured I should try one more before giving them a miss. Did not expect the runny texture and I don't think my cats did either. I really, really like the ingredients of H&G food but sadly if my cats or ferals won't eat it, the best ingredients in the won't Too runny. Might try the brand again at some point as price and ingredients are good. … more

    Stinky but kitten loves it.

    By on

I brought home a 2 1/2 month old kitten from the shelter he was eating a lousy wet food. I did some research and this was listed as very good. I had one half can of the nasty stuff and so I put a scoop of this separate incase he wouldn't eat it. To my surprise he went right for Hounds and Gatos and left the Nasty stuff. Some of it is really mushy and stinky but he likes that the best. I like that it has high meat content but would like to know if the meat is human grade. I contacted the manufacture and didn't get a straight answer
