Feeding Instructions

For Adult cats, feed 1 can per 6 - 8 lbs. of body weight per day.

Kittens require up to 2 and a half times this amount. For pregnant and lactating females, allow free access to food. Adjust the amount of food you serve based on the age, size and activity level of your cat. Food should be fed at room temperature. Promptly refrigerate the unused portion.

Transition Instructions

If you are currently free-feeding a kibble, the first step is to feed your cat at meal times. Put the kibble down for a 20-30 minute time frame for a few days to help your cat recognize that this is feeding time. Yes, your cat will be hungry at these mealtimes if they have been used to grazing all day long, but this step will help in the transition.

Once these meal times are established, then try introducing canned food. Your cat will either like it and your transition took no time at all, or you may have to keep trying to entice the cat. If your cat will not eat the canned food you have offered, try putting some kibble on the top to entice the cat. If that doesn’t work, feed kibble and try a different protein at the next mealtime. It may take a while – a few day or a few weeks – for your cat to realize that this is food, but remember that you are doing it to better your cats health.

  • IBD cat does well on it

    By on

My cat has IBD and used to be on a venison food. The quality of that food went down noticeably, so we just transitioned her to Hound & Gatos Duck Formula. She's adjusted well to it, and I'm pleased with the quality of this new food. Hound & Gatos Duck smells fresh when I open a new can. The food is pate style, but it's practically swimming in broth. The extra moisture is great, especially for a cat that needs it in her diet. Even microwaved, the food smells "clean" and fresh--it doesn't take on a musky smell like other proteins or brands. My cat does get a little picky with this food sometimes. She's never been a big fan of pate style food. She's never been a big fan of pate style food. When chopping up a portion of the loaf at mealtime, I try to leave big pieces for her so it's less pate and more chunky. I'm currently looking for a duck topper to sprinkle on to encourage her to eat a bit more. … more

  • Cats love this

    By on

I had heard that Hound and Gatos is a very good food so decided to give it a try. My cats love this. One thing to know though is that is does contain a lot of liquid, which for me is good as one of my cats is constipated so I give her the liquid to keep her hydrated and she just loves it.

  • High quality cat food

    By on

Tried the duck flavor as their usual flavor out of stock. Took a couple days to adjust but my cats seem to like it. Main thing is my cat who's allergic to so many foods is tolerating it well. If it wasn't so expensive they would be eating more of it.

  • Lots of liquid, less meat.

    By on

First, my cat loves the food, and gobbles it down lustily. BUT... the label says that the contents weigh 156g, and mine have consistently fallen short of that by 5 - 10g. ALSO, the paté does not fill the can; it is surrounded by a moat of broth (and btw, the short-weight issue mentioned above includes the weight of this broth). If you want to divide the can's contents into equal servings (like I do), you will have to mash the paté into the broth to make a meaty soup, and spoon it out that way. Note that our cat loves Hound & Gatos, and none of the other four flavors we use have this broth-moat issue... only the duck.

  • Good food, damaged cans

    By on Top 500 Contributor

My cats devoured this, which I expected they would because duck is one of their favorites. I had a lot of damaged cans though. I bought a case of the chicken formula as well and another case of a different brand and all 3 cases had extremely dented cans, this one having the worst though. I would say about half of the cans were damaged, and 1/3 of these were so dented and crushed I'm not sure how they didn't bust open, but as far as I can tell none did so the food should be safe. I smell each can I open just to be sure!

  • My cats LOVE this now but didn't initially.

    By on

I was actually buying the Wild Calling duck canned cat food but Chewy was no longer selling it so I had to try other duck versions with my three kitties until I could find them something they all liked and at the same time was exceptionally healthy too. Luckily I still had some Wild Calling duck to mix in with Hound and Gatos and after about a week, my cats converted and now LOVE this brand. Thank God, because my kitties are so dang picky. By the way, this canned cat food isn't a topper and can be given exclusively as a main meal because it's nutritionally complete. Check out the Hound and Gatos website, you'll be in for a real eye opener about cat food.

  • Reformulated with salmon oil

    By on

This is excellent food that my cats enjoy, however there is salmon oil in it. The salmon oil was not listed on Chewy's nutrition description or the image of the food's ingredients. The recipe must have been reformulated because the salmon oil is listed on the cans I received as well as the manufacturer's website.

  • It's great but...

    By on

This food is wonderful, she loves it, no extra proteins that she's allergic too (turkey, chicken, fish, etc) like all this other brands, BUT it's so asininely high in fat she's blowing up like a fuzzy balloon. Seriously. I wish I could post a picture. I'm going to have to switch, but it won't be easy.

  • Love the high protein

    By on

I love this brand and the fact it is high protein. My three cats eat this flavor pretty well. I rotate with another flavor that is their favorite.
