Feeding Instructions

Adult :Feed 3/4 - 1 - 1/4 cans per 15 lbs of body weight per day. Puppy: Feed up to twice the Adult amount per day. Gestation and Lactation: Feed up to 3 times the Adult amount per day. For Combination Feeding: Feed 1/3 cup less dry food for every 1/2 can of wet food.

Adjust the amount of food you serve based on the age, size and activity level of your dog. Food should be fed at room temperature. Promptly refrigerate the unused portion.

Transition Instructions

A slow transition will be the easiest. Plan for the process to take about a week. Days 1 and 2, mix 25% of the new food in with the old food. If the change is tolerated well, increase the transition to 50% new food. Continue for a few days then increase the new food to 75%, then 100% after a couple more days. Be sure to mix the “old” food with Hound & Gatos – don’t offer each food separately. If transitioning from kibble, you can just add the can as a topper to the kibble. If loose stools occur, keep the ratio of old/new food at the current ratio for a couple of days until the stools firm back up.

Changed the formula, now jumped the price

    By on

This used to be very affordable. Now they have changed the formula and the price has jumped way high. I'm not happy. The original formula and price was perfect. Now I will be searching for alternatives.

Great for dogs needing lower fat! And all life stages!!

    By on

Love this food! High quality lower fat with a neutral (for those who pay attention to TCM food therapy) protein. Now that Instinct has changed their formulas, this is about the only thing I can find that isn't crazy high in fat and doesn't have chicken, turkey, or lamb! Also, this is good for all life stages INCLUDING growth of large breed puppies (AAFCO statement). So thrilled to have this affordable option. I am sorry for those who liked the old formula, but so happy for me and for my dog!!

    Hound Pork

    By on

My dog loves this food. He licks his bowl clean every time; and the price, for the 12 cans, is fantastic. Please keep the pork in stock. Thanks Chewy!

    Passes Picky Eater Test

    By on

So far, my very picky eater will eat this when other canned dog food gets rejected. He's a senior and needs to take pills twice a day with food, so if he won't eat, he doesn't get his meds. I've been resorting to buying Hormel Smoked Ham in small tuna-can size tins. That usually works but isn't peak nutrition, not to mention it spoils him. But I tried both the Pork and Beef flavors of this brand and he seems to like it almost as much as the Hormel... so it's a win for me. He gets good, complete meals but thinks he's getting people-food. Win-win!

The beware review below is right

    By on

The other flavors didn't seem to change but this one did. Calorie content and protein content plummeted. 2.5 stars on dog food advisor. Other flavors I still recommend. But yup, this used to look and smell like human food. Not anymore.....

BEWARE - Product has changed the formula

    By on

So disappointed that agar agar and pork liver have been added. I considered this product superior to most and although still better than any food in big box stores, I will not be serving this to my dogs any longer. I simply can't trust them with all the changes they are making. CHEWY - you need to update the description to show that there has been a change in formula so others aren't caught off guard when they open the can and see and smell the difference; its NOT 100% meat protein with the addition of agar agar and there is no way to confirm that its human grade meat since H&G's website doesn't even claim that.

    Good pate texture

    By on

My picky husky loves this food mixed with his kibble. It has a high protein content. Good pate texture. The order came with a dented can in beat up box though.

    Last case for me

    By on

1st off with this new formula they reduced the calories from 522.5 to 336, wow! Second they cheapened minerals and it is no longer 100% animal protein (98% now) also I am not liking the sunflower or salmon oil added, I would rather have the natural animal fat. Sorry hound and gatos you lose my case or two a month.

One of the best products on the market.

    By on

My dog loves all flavors of Hound & Gatos canned dog food. More importantly, the quality, in my opinion, is outstanding. The "Dog Food Advisor Website" is a good place to search for dog food ratings. Its there that I learned about the difference between sodium selenite, and the reportedly healthier Selenium Yeast. Dog Owners should educate themselves on the difference between these two ingredients. Be advised however, that it can be a challenge to find a dog food product containing Selenium Yeast.
