FAQ

Where should I install the Professional filter?

Position the filter in an appropriate place under the aquarium; in order for it to be primed correctly, it must be placed at a lower level than the aquarium. If you wish to position it at the side of the tank, it can be primed on the floor and then moved after it has been set in motion.

In what order should the filtering materials be inserted into my Professional filter?

There are different schools of thought on this issue. From the point of view of biological filtering efficiency, it makes little difference how the materials are positioned. All we can do is offer some advice on how to position the materials, starting from the bottom. For sparsely populated aquariums: black sponge, cylinders, carbon/zeolite, fine filtering poly wool pads. For densely populated aquariums: cylinders, black sponge, carbon/zeolite, fine filtering poly wool pads. The second option is better for decanting the particulate matter of the aquarium.

How often do I need to change or wash the ceramic cylinders of my Professional filter?

The ceramic cylinders must be washed when they look dirty. In order to avoid depleting the useful bacteria in the substratum, the cylinders should be rinsed using water from the aquarium, and not with tap water, since the chlorine in tap water would kill off the bacteria colonies.

How often do I need to change the active carbon of my Professional filter?

The power of absorption of the active carbon runs out in a few days. The use of carbon is recommended when it is necessary to eliminate chemicals, medicines and colorants, following the indications on the product. The carbon must be removed from the filter each time any medicines are given to the fish.

How often do I need to change or wash the black sponges of my Professional filter?

The black sponges, since they carry out the coarse filtering, must be washed at least once a month, and must be replaced regularly, because as time goes by, simple washing is insufficient to completely remove the residue that builds up. The sponges must also be replaced when they are no longer flexible, when they shrink, or when it is no longer possible to eliminate 100% of the waste trapped in the pores.

How often do I need to change or wash the white sponge of my Professional filter?

The white sponge should be replaced every time maintenance is carried out.

    So far liking this Hydor

By David on Sep 12, 2018

When I first set up this filter in my 75 gallon tank the water was cloudy even after several days. I Was going to return it. I Decided to completely clean the filter first. Now water is clear. I guess the new filter needed a run through. So far I like this filter.

    One of my Favorite Filters

    By Kat5 on Jul 6, 2018

Hadn't heard much about this brand and was originally apprehensive about trying it out, but I've had mine for over a year now and I'm still in love. It is a truly silent canister, keeps the water sparkling, and is a nice powerhouse alongside my HOB. The parts are simple to put together, cleaning is a breeze, and I love the way it primes right up. Would rate this above other "go-to" filters from even brands like Eheim any day. Can't speak highly enough of Hydor, and hope they become a bigger name in the aquarium industry soon enough.

    Great filter for price

By RooBot on Jun 11, 2018

I’m very pleased with my purchase. This filter seems very powerful and is practically silent. It’s easy to set up and I presume easy to clean. I agree with other reviews that the spray bar attachments could be improved. The suction cup things are awkward and come apart easily but were hard for me to put back together. I would buy this again and highly recommend it. I didn’t read the manual but did watch a short YouTube video. The only thing I had to watch the video for to figure out was priming. My water is clear and the 3 media baskets have plenty of room. I got the 350 for a 65 gallon tank.

    OK for the price

By Chelle on Jul 27, 2018

I have a Fluval and API canister but wanted a second for my 55 gallon tank. The Hydor is a bit flimsier than my others but does a decent job. I do like the fact that it included a spray bar as an option and the self primer is far more effective than my other canister filters.

    Decent external filter

By JohnQ on Apr 10, 2018

I bought the Hydor filter to replace my Cascade unit that died after many years. While I was OK with my old filter, I wanted something better. Well the Hydor is basically the same design as the Cascade except for bypass, which is better on the Hydor. I expected the Hydor to be quieter, but I found no great improvement in that.

    Beast mode

By CREBS on Feb 12, 2018

I bought the 350 for my 40 gallon breeder tank and wow. The only complaint I Gabe is the spray bar has no height adjustment like the intake bar . I made my own adjustnent using excess tube to drop down the height and went to Lowe’s and bought a 90 degree elbow hooked existing spray bar in and all
