Questions & Answers

Why is the protein percentage lower in the large puppy food than the other types of instinct food?
Answer by ChewyJul 25, 2018
Feeding large breed puppies something that is too high in protein may make them put on weight too quickly causing abnormal joint development and making them more prone to issues like arthritis in the future. Many large breed puppy formulas are designed with this in mind. This particular formula has a balanced mix of poultry, fish and meat for a healthy exposure to proteins.

How many cups does the 20 lb bag hold?

Caused so many tummy issues for my puppy

I have a large breed puppy, after researching this food seemed like a great choice. After getting him fully on it he had diarrhea non-stop for 3 weeks. We kept thinking it was something else and spoke to the vet she looked at the nutritional info on this food and said it is the food. Puppies in general should not have more than about 31% protein. Too much can cause them to gain weight too quickly. It can also cause GI upset in dogs of all ages. Not sure why the protein content is so high when research shows that it can harm lbp growth and not help it. She said the ideal protein intake for a large breed puppy is 26%-30%. We stopped the food immediately, switched him to something with 26% protein and his issue was resolved in 24 hours.

Bag doesn't seal

I like this brand however I've purchased 3 huge bag they have the reclosable seals however once you open the bag you can't reseal it since the seal doesn't stick to both sides of the bag and have to worry about keeping the air out and the food fresh

Great food disappointed in quality

We have been feeding this food to our 8 month old Belgian malinois. Lately the freeze dried pieces are completely smashed and it leaves the food all powdery. It makes the rest of the food gross especially if our god gets any water in his food. Really disappointed especially since this food is quite pricey.

Good choice for my Pup

Just got a 4 month old she loves this kibble. I like the listed ingredients. Ticks all the vet's suggested ingredients for a raw diet. Eventually she'll go totally raw diet. Good skin, teeth, coat, energy and behavior.

Good food for all animals

I love instinct and so do all of my pets. I buy this for my cats and both of my dogs, and they all eat it so well, I noticed the smell of their poop is also not as bad.

Poor puppy

First my puppy ate and seemed to love, but then she started having tummy issues and refuses to eat after several nights of diarrhea. Think she need a more sensitive kind of puppy food.

Is a great food, pup doesn't like it

Okay let me start off by saying this is a great food and made my guys coat and digestion the best it's ever been. At first he loved it because it was new and exciting but about a bag and a half in, he wouldn't eat it right away, it had to sit for at least an hour before he gave in. And let me just say that my guy is a 13 month old lab so he will down anything given to him so this was quite a surprise when he became un interested. I will be switching him to a different recipe and see if I have more success.
