We have a resident bear. We’ve named her Percy! In our own self defense, we’ve provided her some food to keep her from household garbage and from coming on deck close to house. She has her own garbage can and food tray. Our weather changed limiting natural Spring food options. She loves Chewy shelled peanuts, peanut butter and black oil sunflower seeds! She chose, and let us know, preferred feeding spot which we’ve dutifully honored!! Everyone is safe & happy; Percy gets some good high protein eats, humans have buffer zone, our 3 labs have accepted Percy’s nighttime feeding presence from generous safe distance. Percy has adjusted nicely as we help her get thru tough extended winter weather until natural food available.
Last 4 bags have been burnt
Not sure what’s going on but the last 4 orders have been burnt to a crisp and I don’t consider them safe to feed to any animals. I’ve been ordering these peanuts for years and the quality used to be fantastic. I will need to find a different option that is still affordable.
I have been using Lyric peanut pieces for years. No more. Lyric has been increasing prices every 60 days since early 2020. As far as the animals are concerned, a peanut is a peanut. So now that Lyric peanuts are $2.59 per pound and Kaytee peanuts are $1.59 per pound, the choice is pretty clear. I was able to remain a loyal Chewy customer without going to numerous other internet sources offering less costly products. Goodbye Lyric you got my attention. Hello Kaytee and Chewy.
Only reason they received 1 star is so I can write this for other customers to NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. The peanuts were burnt, the birds would not even eat them and even the crows are very hesitant.
Birds not loving it.
I have found this to happen before, but there are lots of what I call red peanuts and my birds do not like them. They like regular peanut pieces, not the red ones. Love the brand, but not this item. I mixed them then with a bag of regular shelled peanuts, and these are left at the bottom of the feeder after the birds are done picking out the ones they like.
Not sure about these
The bag is full of mostly peanut halves. They have black spots on them. Not sure if it’s dirt or mold. I scraped it off a few, toasted them and ate them myself. They tasted alright. I cannot scrape every single one. The birds and squirrels eat them up. Haven’t seen any adverse reactions. Just don’t think peanuts should have black stuff on them.
The squirrels are very grateful!
Chewy came through again - as always. And with this batch, I've even learned that mallards like peanuts! Who'd have thought . . . .
I've bought these before, but this batch smells burnt. Squirrels wont even touch them. Dark looking too. Not Chewys fault, this is Kaytee issue.
Pieces and chips
A few years ago I used to buy these kaytee peanuts locally and they were always a good quality. Then my local place stopped carrying them so I switched to lyric 'peanut pieces'.... and despite the name, they're mostly large and intact peanut halves. Now with everything being out of stock locally I've been buying a fair amount of my bird supplies from chewy, including this bag of kaytee peanuts. I really wish kaytee would change the name to reflect the product, these are chips and crumbs of peanuts with hardly any intact halves. I also had a lot of dried shriveled peanuts and some black ones I had to throw out too. I have a few different types of peanut feeders and one that has a larger screen couldn't even hold these pieces, they just fell out because they were too small. Birds need the fats and oils in seeds and nuts so when they're old or over processed/heated, then they're nutritionally worthless. And when they're smaller than a tic-tac, then you get the birds hanging out on the feeder to eat several instead of taking a half and flying off and making room for another bird at the feeder. Seeing as I have temperatures in the low teens and snow pretty often now, I want my birds well fed and happy and I want to get the quality I think my money is paying for. I give 2 stars for chewy, reasonably priced and quick delivery. For kaytee, your quality has declined and your product name and packaging are misleading for those who are buying online and cannot see the product in person. I will be switching back to lyric, even if they're a few bucks more, it's worth it.
Big hit in my yard
I started to use this for the Blue Jays. I find it also helps keep the squirrels out of my feeders. I spread it on the ground away from the feeders so the smaller birds can eat peacefully. On my 3rd bag and will need more before Spring gets here.
