The surface of the bed will be about 15°F above ambient air temperature until the pet lies on the bed. Then it will warm to about 102°F, which is the natural body temperature of dogs and cats.
This bed is not pressure sensitive. All K&H heated beds and pads feature dual thermostats and are designed to warm to your pet's normal body temperature when he/she lies on the pad. This is a function of the insulation provided by a pet’s body, not the weight of the pet.K&H beds and pads will emit heat anytime they are plugged in so your pet can sense that heat and be drawn to the bed or pad for warmth and comfort. When your pet is not on the pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature.
MET requires that all manufacturers put the extension cord statement “Do not use with extension cord” on every item that is MET listed by UL 499 standards. This is because they cannot test every extension cord on the market in conjunction with our products for safety. Also, MET suggests that an extension cord is not recommended as a permanent fixture and should only be a temporary solution when using any electrical product.
MET Safety Laboratories suggests unplugging the bed if you leave your home on an extended vacation, as they do with any electrical appliance. Otherwise, it is designed for 24/7 operation and you can leave it plugged in all day. This item has been certified by MET labs to adhere to strict electrical safety standards.
There is not an off/on switch. The bed is always on when plugged in.
I set this out tonight and my cat immediately sat on it to test it out, then sprawled his body over the entire thing. I have never seen him lay like that. It's like he's trying to get every part of his body to feel the warmth. He has a healing leg injury, and he is laying with that side on the pad, so I think it feels good for that. I am sure he would get off or shift of it was bothering him. I felt it getting warm so I know it worked. I'm keeping an eye on him via the camera (I'm attaching a couple pictures from the cam in night vision). He actually has a fixation with cords and was playing with the cord for the heating pad for a second, but luckily he can't really bite it because he has an e-collar on and hasn't figured out how to get things into his mouth. I also said "no chewing cords" through the cam and he stopped. I'll have to figure out some kind of barrier for the cord if he keeps playing with it. I had no idea he would love it so much. Too bad I didn't get it earlier!
We purchased this heating pad for our cat who was dying of cancer. It was exactly what he needed. A safe, gentle heat that was constant throughout the night. I was greatful it was safe enough to leave plugged in 24/7. Have seen other reviews of the heating element not covering the whole pad and to that I say it would have gotten too hot had it been any larger. Thank you K&H for giving our baby the comfort he needed at the end
I bought this because my cat likes to lay on my router that sits on my desk because it is warm. At first I wasn’t impressed. The one side is made out of some weird material that my cats want to scratch and tear up. I flipped it over and was using the wrong side! Now they both want to sit on it but only one can fit at a time. So I bought another today. I wish the color was prettier. I plan on getting some fleece fabric to make a cover like a tie blanket to spruce it up. The heat is just right. My cats love it!
My cat LOVES this totally.... His tendency to perch on my neck for warmth has declined. And it really doesn't get too hot which was my hesitation in purchasing it... It is easily portable & good price as well. So if I want him near me all I have to do is bring the matt over, plug in and get him to lie on it. We have found a good compromise for 'his way or the high way' when it comes to cuddles.
This was on sale and I have a skinny older cat. The grey outer pad is not well thought out. It sluffs off and a cat could lick and eat. Not safe. But I put a pillowcase over it and my cats are loving it. One cat or the other is on it constantly, and my skinny Mojito is on it all night. Four stars because of outer pad being no good at all.
Bought this for our elderly cat and she loved it! Our other cat and our Chihuahua never missed an opportunity to take it over whenever she got up. It's easy to unzip to remove the heating pad for washing. However, even before we washed it we noticed that the pad would shed in big clumps. That's the only reason I'm not rating it 5 stars. If it had a cover, it might prevent this issue.
I wasn't thrilled with the tiny heating pad, that barely got above room temperature. However, it turned out to be a moot point because it didn't last a week. I can only assume the sound it made while being shredded was satisfying.
I am not overly impressed with the mat. I did get it on sale so the price wasn’t bad but there is no way I would be satisfied if I had paid full price. The zipper needing to stay open some to let the cord out is a bad design, the gray bed itself isn’t holding up to be washed frequently to keep it clean. Overall my cats do like it, and I like that it only warms when they are laying on it.
I initially was going to return this. I removed the electric heating mat and plugged it in, after like half an hour I touched it and it felt just room temperature. It wasn't cold but I'd hardly describe it as warm. I was pretty disappointed. But I thought I'd give it a shot and let my girl Luna make the final call. Immediately she made herself at home and promptly fell asleep. She's barely left the pad since especially when it's plugged in. So I'm guessing it's just warm enough for them, ended up being a solid product 5 stars.
For you folks out there double check your pads are working. Don't assume they are. I bought two, one was bad and so was the other. I found out because my cats weren't using them on our really cold days. I said what's wrong? Sure enough, weren't working. The heating element is only 1/4 size of the Pad. But let me say its enough for the cat to curl up on but needs a cool spot and a comfy un-heated part of the mat to lie on. Or it would have to hang off the mat onto the cold floor of sorts so don't fret its a good thing.
